Obama's team takes Afghan withdrawal to Congress

Top US military and diplomatic officials appeared before Congressional committees a day after President Barack Obama announced plans to withdraw his 2009 "surge" from Afghanistan, and attention immediately began shifting to neighbouring Pakistan. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States must reconsider its military aid to the nuclear-armed South Asian state, which some American politicians believe has priorities in Afghanistan that diverge from US goals. Though Admiral Mike Mullen, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that Obama's plan for the troop drawdown was more than he had been prepared for, the withdrawal will save some $40 billion a year. Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan reports from Washington DC.

Early Afghan withdrawal possible 14.12.11

A report today suggests thousands of British troops may be withdrawn from Afghanistan a year earlier than currently planned. The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Defence Secretary Philip Hammond is considering starting the pullout sooner to save money. According to the paper, the National Security Council has begun discussions that could see the troops leave during 2013. David Cameron has already pledged that all British combat troops will be out by 2014 but previous plans had suggested most would remain until close to that deadline.

Afghanistan Withdrawal, Far From Over

No matter what President Obama announces tonight the war in Afghanistan is still a long ways from over. Even if 50000 troops were to leave by the end of 2012, that still leaves 50000 more. And reports have said that secret negotiations for permanent US basing in Afghanistan have been underway. Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson discusses.

Lugar: Path to Afghan Withdraw May Be 'Disappointing'

Complete Premium video at: fora.tv Senator Dick Lugar (R-IN) suggests that the complete withdraw of American troops from Afghanistan may require enlisting the help of local Taliban militias, a compromise he predicts will be "disappointing" to many. "Withdrawal even partially or largely is going to mean acceptance of certain conditions that Afghans choose, and sometimes not by the ballot, but simply by the force of whoever happens to be in charge at that point," says Lugar. "And that's going to be disappointing to the world, to us, to many in Afghanistan." ----- Senator Dick Lugar (R-IN) sits down for a conversation with attendees of the Monitor Breakfast to discuss the power dynamics between the Chinese civilian premier and the People's Liberation Army, relations between the GOP and the Tea Party, US policy toward Afghanistan and other topics. - The Monitor Breakfast Richard Green "Dick" Lugar is the senior United States Senator from Indiana. France will speed up troop withdrawal from Afghanistan by one year

PARIS, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- France will pull its combat troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2013, a year early, President Nicolas Sarkozy has announcement. "Continuing the transition and the gradual transfer of combat responsibilities will let us plan for the return of all our fighting forces by the end of 2013," Sarkozy said after a Paris meeting with Karzai. Sarkozy's announcement came a week after a rogue Afghan soldier fired on French troops embedded with Afghan forces in Kapisa on a training mission. The attack killed four soldiers and wounded 15, eight seriously.

US Afghanistan Troop Withdrawal Hitting Strains

America's plan to hand over responsibility for securing Afghanistan faced unprecedented strains, as the US and its allies withdrew hundreds of military and civilian advisers in Kabul following a string of deadly attacks by Afghan soldiers on American troops. The US, Britain, Germany and France temporarily pulled out the advisers helping the Afghan government on Sunday amid a wave of unrest triggered by the burning of Qurans last week at the Bagram US military base.

Merkel casts doubt over German withdrawal from Afghanistan

www.euronews.com German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on a surprise visit to Afghanistan, has cast doubt on plans to withdraw German troops from the war-torn country by 2014. Merkel told German soldiers in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif she couldn't say for certain that the withdrawal would take place by NATO's deadline. "It's very important for the Afghan people to know that we won't leave them completely on their own when we withdraw. We will continue the reconstruction of Afghanistan, we will continue training and I think this is a very important message," said Merkel. During the visit, the Chancellor lunched with soldiers before paying tribute to German troops that have died in Afghanistan. Germany currently has some 5000 troops serving with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. But opinion polls at home suggest that the German involvement in Afghanistan is unpopular with voters. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Christopher Alexander at Michael Coren Show - Afghan Withdrawal - Part 2 of 2

Christopher Alexander appearing at Michael Coren Show discussing Canada's Afghan Withdrawal. "Six years of slogging in the trenches of Afghanistan would be enough to turn most people into hardened cynics. Not Chris Alexander. Canada's former ambassador to Afghanistan is an unabashed idealist -- committed to nation-building, still hopeful for that ravaged country, and convinced of Canada's unique ability to help spread democracy in the world.... As a foreign service prodigy, he was named Canada's first ambassador to Afghanistan at the tender age of 34, and stayed on as a United Nations special representative until 2009. "When I arrived in Kabul, we didn't even have an embassy there," he says. "We worked our asses off." He immersed himself in Afghanistan's history and culture, and earned wide respect from Afghans and foreigners alike." Peace Groups Call For US Withdrawal After Army Sergeant Kills 16 Civilians in Afghanistan

democracynow.org - We go to Kabul to speak with an Afghan peace activist about the shooting spree by an US Army sergeant in Afghanistan, which killed 16 Afghan civilians, nine of them children. Calls for a more rapid withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan have escalated after the US soldier reportedly walked more than a mile from his base, breaking in to three separate houses to attack families as they slept. Villagers say he then gathered 11 bodies and set them on fire, including the bodies of four girls younger than six. The attack comes as the United States and Afghanistan are negotiating the Strategic Partnership Agreement, the framework for US involvement in Afghanistan after foreign combat troops leave at the end of 2014. "We feel that surely governments need to resolve this conflict through diplomacy and move away from the failed military strategy that has resulted in all that we are witnessing today," says the Kabul-based peace activist who goes by the name "Hakim." He is the coordinator for Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers. Afghan Stalemate: 'US pullout to be delayed for years'

A leaked CIA report says the situation in Afghanistan is mired in stalemate, contradicting recent optimistic Pentagon statements. The sobering conclusion is deepening divisions between US intelligence and the military, about the outcome of the decade-long war. The report also claims that attempts to improve security are being undermined by corruption, incompetent governance, and Taliban fighters operating safely from neighbouring Pakistan. Khalil Nouri, who's the co-founder of the New World Strategies Coalition told RT the situation in Afghanistan is so grim, that the US might be having second thoughts on withdrawing. Afghan Women's Activist Rangina Hamidi: Worsening Conditions Should Hasten US Withdrawal

democracynow.org - Amid US vows to stay in Afghanistan until 2014, we speak with Afghan businesswoman Rangina Hamidi who argues the US presence there makes the security situation worse. "If the US soldiers cannot do their job -- as we are now seeing even more evidence of that philosophy -- then I think it is only fair to ask them to leave," Hamidi says. After residing in the United States, Hamidi returned to her native Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Just this year, she came back to the United States due to the deteriorating safety situation in her homeland. Hamidi disagrees with the argument that the US occupation in Afghanistan improves the safety of women. She also remembers the late award-winning photographer Paula Lerner, who has died at the age of 52. Lerner was the principal photographer for the Emmy Award-winning project, "Behind The Veil: An Intimate Journey Into The Lives of Kandahar's Women Featuring Photography." "Paula put behind all or any pre-notions of what Afghans are and really just gave her soul to the people by being present on a day-to-day, second-to-second basis and not being judgmental about what Afghans were or how Afghans are," Hamidi says.
