Ahmed Shihab-Eldin: Will Social Media Democratize the Arab World?

Al Jazeera English's Ahmed Shihab-Eldin's new show, The Stream, which debuts today, has an ambitious goal: Shihab-Eldin wants The Stream to "leverage voices who often don't make it into mainstream media" by engaging wired communities across the world. Shihab-Eldin spoke with The Nation at the 2011 National Conference for Media Reform in Boston about how he was one of the few in the media who began to follow Tunisia before it was clear a revolution was unfolding. He talks about how the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa all began as "popular uprisings," not religious uprisings. And, he adds that his new show will take a bottom-up look at many of the ongoing uprisings and examine how social media is helping people circumvent oppression. "The potential democratization of the Arab world is directly related to the potential democratization of media," concludes Shihab-Eldin. For videos, visit www.TheNation.com.

NCMR 2011 - Egypt, Afghanistan and Beyond: Independent Journalism and Crisis

Independent media makers are using new tools to tell the most important stories of our time. When pro-democracy protests erupted in Egypt, independent and non-commercial journalists were quickly on the scene offering more in-depth coverage than mainstream media. In Afghanistan, independent reporters keep asking the tough questions about the longest war in US history. The panelists in this session, held at the National Conference for Media Reform in Boston on April 9, are breaking new ground online and around the world -- by means of blogs, YouTube, streaming video and other platforms. How are independent voices beating mainstream media to the story, amplifying their message, and shedding crucial light in times of crisis? How are independent journalists prodding mainstream media to cover issues they might otherwise ignore? Panelists: Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Democracy Now!; Jeff Cohen, Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College; Derrick Crowe, Brave New Foundation; Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, Al Jazeera English; Marcy Wheeler, FireDogLake.com. Thanks to Walt Kosmowski of Beverly Community Access Media for the footage. To see more of the conference, go to www.conference.freepress.net. For more about media issues, go do freepress.net.

#Tal3mrak: Hashtag in Saudi Arabia Challenges King

The phrase Tal3mrak in Saudi Arabia literally translates into "May God Prolong Your Life" - and its used as aa sign of respect when addressing royalty or influential business men in the Gulf region. But a new use of the expression in the form of a hashtag on twitter marks an outpouring of criticisms of the government from netizens in Saudi Arabia and the wider Arab World who claim the royal family ignores Saudi Arabia's poor and are quelling the spirit of dissent and self-determination across the region.
