Aitor Throup Interview from CP Company Past & Present Show

The CP Company Goggle Jacket was originally designed by Massimo Osti as a gift, as part of CP Company's sponsorship involvement in the '988 edition of the iconic Mile Miglia (Thousand Miles) Italian open road endurance race. Its design features embody the cautious study of all functionality and innovation details derived from car racing. Its most original design features were the hinging goggles built into the hood and the window on the left sleeve through which a driver could check his watch whist driving. To celebrate 20 years since its release, CP Company invited RCA graduate (2006) Aitor Throup to re-invent this icon of clothing design, resulting in a forward-thinking ergonomic driving concept. Aitor Throup's design philosophy is centred around ideologies of a constant research to find new solution in clothing, mainly explored his own sculptures. Throup's 'justified design philosophy' dictates a need for a reason behind every design feature. His work has been described as 'conceptual functionalism'. The CP Company 20th anniversary Goggle Jacket is a direct example of this unique approach to design. This exhibition (curated by Aitor Throup) incorporates the origins of the Goggle Jacket, as well as in-depth view into the design process and functionality behind the special 20th anniversary edition.

LEGS

'Legs', the result of six years of 'new object research', aims to celebrate trousers and elevate them from their position as mere commodities to original objects d'art. Challenging the biannual dictates of the fashion industry, 'Legs' presents 24 archival trousers alongside three new reinterpretations of trousers found within previous collections. Uniquely, the starting point of Aitor Throup's creative process does not involve a specific vision as to what the final garment may be. Instead, free form, drawn illustrations of imaginary characters with distinct anatomies lead to overarching, narrative driven concepts that predetermine what the final creation shall be. In place of aesthetic frivolity is a responsibility to make nothing fall outside the register of an artistic statement or experience. It is an approach Throup describes as "Justified Design", in which all design features are the results of -- and justified by -- the various processes pioneered by the designer. THE FUNERAL OF NEW ORLEANS (PART ONE)

Adopting the traditional funeral procession performed by New Orleans' marching bands as a contextual framework, The Funeral of New Orleans (Part One) tells the story of how five members of a marching band protected themselves and their instruments in the face of the city's decimation by Hurricane Katrina on the morning of August 29, 2005. A metaphor for how New Orleans must embrace its unique musical heritage in order to regenerate the city, the collection presents a functional, physical interpretation of the interaction between a musician and his instrument through the transformation of body armour into instrument cases. The musician has sacrificed his body's wellbeing in order to save his instrument -- New Orleans can now survive by building upon its unique musical heritage. Each garment within The Funeral of New Orleans (Part One) is cut on a life-size thermoactive cotton mesh sculpture of the human body in the precise pose needed to play each instrument. Presented in order, the collection's trousers embody five stages of exaggerated shrinkage from when wool is exposed to water.
