A SALUTE to the LATE GREAT WARDA - Algeria's Singer to Egypt - Thank You WARDA for the Memories

The Great Arab Singer WARDA has died today 17th May 2012 of a Cardiac Arrest in Cairo. She was 73 years old. This is a Live Concert given by WARDA in The Gulf a few years ago. WARDA'S love of music, love of singing and love of people are so clear at this concert. Thanks for the Memories WARDA ORCHESTRATION The surprising things to the untrained, indeed, to the trained ear, is that the music of Classic Arab singers is not 'Classical' or 'Traditional'. The musics of Divas Oum Khalthoum, Nagat and dearly missed Warda are actually POPULAR forms of Arabic Music. Many people think that these fantastic singers, orchestras and compositions are from 'The Golden Age' of Arabia, but the FORM [sections over time] are heavily influenced by Western Pop Song with other features of SIMPLIFING LYRICS and offering REPETITION of words and sections. There may also have been a poltical and cultural agenda of DE-TURKIFICATION of Arabic Musics after centuries of colonisation of The Ottoman Empire. Turkey may also have had a period of DE-ARABACISATION of Turkish Music fulfilling a simpar agenda. If we look at the dictionary definition of POPULARISE: "...The noun POPULARISE has 2 senses: 1. an interpretation that easily understandable and acceptable 2. the act of making something attractive to the general public..." In promoting 'Classic Arabic Music' the musicians have to work with a number of parameters to attract a public with a widely varied educational and cultural background. Arabic ...

People & Power - Algeria The Revolution That Never Was

www.youtube.com Why did the uprisings that brought down governments across North Africa and the Middle East fail to materialise in Algeria? Was it, as the government would claim, because of the regime's 'progressive leadership' or has something more sinister and complex been going on? Opponents and human rights activists say it has more to do with a wary population traumatised by the country's violent past and and living in fear of its secret police. People & Power wanted to find out more, but getting into Algeria is difficult - not least because Al Jazeera has been denied official access to the country since 2004. When our requests for journalist visas were ignored, our filmmakers managed to get in unofficially and were able to work discreetly. Algeria: The revolution that never was reveals what they found.

WAR WITHOUT IMAGES - ALGERIA, I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW

WAR WITHOUT IMAGES is the return of photographer Michael von Graffenried to Algeria, a country which, between 1991 and 2000, he visited incognito, taking pictures of people with a hidden camera. During that time before 9/11, Algeria was shaken by a civil war between the government and islamic extremists in which about 200000 people lost their lives. In a land where Islamic terrorists executed more than sixty journalists and photographers in 1993 and 94. The result is a film that holds a mirror to contemporary Algeria: a crossed, contradictory, complex place where laughter and tears intermingle. It is a country that wants both to live and to forget its tragedy and which is still looking for its identity, somewhere between East and West. A film by Mohammed Soudani and Michael von Graffenried Amka Films Productions, vo english subtitles

A former French colony in Northern Africa, Algeria gained its independence after a brutal guerrilla war in 1962. Islam now dominates the region. For the past 50 years, Christians have been an oppressed minority, and the church now faces the threat of extinction. In 2006, the Algerian government instituted a new ordinance called 06-03 limiting the practice of all religions except Islam.

Algeria: dozens die in cold snap

www.euronews.net Think of Algeria and a snow storm does not usually come to mind. But the people of the Mediterranean country are having to get used to unprecedented amounts of the white stuff that have caused widespread chaos. Dozens of deaths are being linked to the cold snap, amid traffic accidents and carbon monoxide poisoning caused by faulty heaters. And there is anger among residents of mountain villages which have been totally cut off, with fuel and food supplies dwindling.

Algerians protest the murder of resident

Algerian security forces dispersed a riot on Tuesday by throwing water cannons and tear gas at protesters in Cheraga, a suburb of the capital Algiers. The angry residents hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at the paramilitary police demanding increased efforts in the investigation of a local man who they alleged was fatally stabbed by a gang. The father of the victim, Nouredine Ait Ouareth, says the priority is for justice to be served and for the government to give importance to the case, as some locals believed the release of a few of the apprehended suspects was due to their prominent status in society. Redouane, a neighbor of the victim, said they will continue to protest until those responsible are arrested and pay for their crime, and to call for the expulsion of the prosecutor dealing with the case. Riots have become common in Algeria and shares the problems of its neighbors in terms of unemployment and suspicion of governmental corruption. While the recent unrest has been contained and sporadic, such friction between residents and authorities could manifest into a national movement akin to the countries involved in last year's Arab Spring. Mihi Puriri speaks - Algerian child custody battle.

The man mediating a custody battle between a New Zealand woman and her Algerian husband over their three children hopes to have the whole family back in New Zealand within a fortnight. Following a seven-month dispute over the children, he said both parents wanted a resolution and they were "considering leaving Algeria with the children and returning to New Zealand or Australia". "I'm hoping to get Mihi and Mohamed and the kids home, hopefully in a week to a fortnight," said the London-based mediator and family spokesman, who did not wish to be named. However, he said he needed more support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to be able to carry out the negotiation, "but to date it hasn't been forthcoming". Before they travelled to Algeria last August, Northland woman Mihi Puriri, 33, and her husband Mohamed Azzaoui, a former boxing champion, had a "perfect marriage". It was Ms Puriri's seventh trip to her husband's home country "and that's why she was so comfortable going this time", he said. However, this time was different. "She loves for life, she took those marriage vows seriously. She wears her heart on her sleeve. We're talking a very, very smart young woman here. The only thing we could accuse her of is being over-trusting." The couple and their three children travelled to Mr Azzaoui's native Algeria because she thought his father was gravely ill. She alleges that soon after they arrived Mr Azzaoui took the family passports and then held their daughters ...

Big thanks to the Bright Algerians for the "Show" & Proud of our follow Citizens!

Dear all Algerian brothers & sisters, " لقوله تعالى" إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَومٍ حَتَّى يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنْفُسِهِم " This is the perfect time to really start focus on one target which is a bright future for Algeria... Certainly, is all that matters now... The past that was all that happened anyhow... We can look back to the past, but we should not stare... We have to admit the mistakes and learn from it, work hard and be nice to people, in order to achieve the targets that we should have achieved once a while ago... It will take us time to have the ability to apply all we've learned from our experiences, skills and theories in this real world that we are living now and at this particular moment in time... We should always think about the future and forecast, to be able to see the results from a different perspectives and specially the unexpected events... Have a back up plan for it, so we can be ready anytime at any moment for a quick response with a smart and potential way to the consequences " * Copyright © 2012 hichemben * Please note, I am only human which means I can make mistakes about this matter. Voter disinterest increases in Algerian slums

Algerian residents from the poorer slum areas say they find no reason to vote in this week's elections as they feel promises are not being kept by the government and their current situations have not improved. Hidden behind the cluster of tall buildings in Algeria's capital Algeirs, are one of the many slums in Algeria, home to hundreds of families. The residents in an area known as the "Civil Concord District" see no reason to participate in the legislative elections. The slums' narrow alleyways are home to hundreds of families who share small accommodations along with their children and other relatives. "Do you want me to vote? Who should I vote for? Just tell me who?," said 41-year-old Gacem Rabeh, who has been living in the slum for over 15 years. "Too many candidates have come here and promised to do many things for us, but once they get our votes - we don't hear from them again. We need the politicians to get us out of here, from this neighborhood, because we are fed up of living here. We have endured 15 years of this already," he added. Mohammed, another slum resident, has said he has not been convinced by any of the candidates other than President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The families living in the slums have all come from different paths; some who were born into such poverty, while others sought shelter in the area after decades of violence. The government has been working on relocating many of the slum residents into free housing, however progress has taken longer ...

Algeria rejects criticism of Arab League in Syria

www.euronews.net The Algerian government on Thursday downplayed suggestions from one of its former Arab League monitors in Syria that the mission was a "farce". The 22-member body was sent to investigate whether President Bashar al-Assad would keep his promise and halt a crackdown on protests against his rule. Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci rejected the claims by ex-observer Anwar Malek that the mission was failing to achieve anything. He pointed to some progress made by the Assad regime during the ten-month uprising.

Algerian Voters Skeptical of Reforms

BY EMOKE BEBIAK Algeria held what many call the country's most open elections ever on Thursday. Yet there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm on the part of the voters. Al Jazeera reports... "Across North Africa, people have become genuinely politicised, yet here in Algeria's most open elections ever, the government has been forced to send out text messages by phone to encourage people to vote." Euronews says the government took extraordinary measures to ensure the elections were fair... "500 foreign observers are monitoring the ballot, billed by President Bouteflika's ageing establishment as more transparent than ever before. Algerian elections have, for years, been dogged by claims of fraud." Algeria is the only country in the North African region where Arab Spring demonstrations were short-lived and not effective. But according to the BBC, last year's revolutions led Algerian leaders to recognize the need for change saying... "Under pressure to reform after last year's 'Arab Spring' revolts in neighbouring countries, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika approved the establishment of 23 new political parties and an increase in the number of seats in parliament to 462." But the Guardian reports President Bouteflika, who has been in power for 12 years, also added last weekend... "There is no lesson in democracy that we need to learn from the Arab spring, because our spring is Algeria." Bloomberg explains Algeria's war-torn history might be the reason why people are not excited ...
