Darth Vader conducts Christmas Choir Flash Mob - Carol of the Bells

Algonquin College. Exam week can be stressful on students. Inspired by the Christmas Food Court Flash Mob, Hallelujah Chorus, the Television Broadcasting students at Algonquin College wanted to showcase the new Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence by lightening the mood with the help of the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir and Darth Vader. Thank you to ORYC Manager, Valerie Jerabek and Director, Kevin Reeves for agreeing to participate in this crazy idea. Thank you to the choir itself, for sharing their beautiful voices and for not minding that we subbed in a Sith Lord as conductor 45 minutes before the performance. Thank you to all the students who helped out and in particular to Television student Shane Webster who ontop of helping organizing was running back and forth from the hospital expecting his first child. Congratulations Shane! Thank you to Chloe Atherton and Bridget Berry for sewing a 43 inch circumference Santa hat on a moments notice and thank you to Randy Dash, Alanna McDonell and Robyn Heaton from Algonquin. Like us: www.facebook.com/algonquinTVB Please note: Lord Vader is not enrolled or on faculty at Algonquin.

Algonquin College's new trades centre explained in under 3 minutes

Scheduled to open in the fall of 2011, the 180000-square-foot building will house 600 additional construction seats and provide space for thousands more students studying in related programs. The uniquely green, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified building will also be a showcase and teaching laboratory for best practices in sustainable construction. The new facility will feature a storm water recovery system that will capture rainwater to flush toilets; solar panels to provide some power and hot water; and a Biowall, a four-storey living, green wall covered with plants, that helps control humidity and clean the air. The design will have a significantly upgraded building envelope, which will include R30 insulated walls, triple glazed windows and a R50 insulated roof. This upgraded building insulation will considerably exceed building code requirements and conserve energy by reducing heating and air conditioning needs. Visit www.algonquincollege.com/expansion for more information.

Algonquin College's ACCE Building opens in Fall 2011

Algonquin College's Dean for the Faculty of Technology and Trades welcomed elected officials, and members of the media, to the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) construction site for a "behind the scenes" tour and to kick-off the official 365-day countdown to the opening of the new $79-million facility. The Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario's Minister of Infrastructure and MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean; and City Councillor Rick Chiarelli; were on hand for a site tour to see the progress that has been made on the building since the official groundbreaking just 11 months ago. "We are on time, on budget, and extremely pleased to be starting the 365-day countdown to the opening of this uniquely green facility," said Claude Brulé, Dean, Faculty of Technology and Trades, Algonquin College. "This new facility will not only help address the skills shortage in the construction industry, it will be a showcase for green sustainable construction and education in Eastern Ontario." When complete, the ACCE will be visually and functionally different as it aims to be the largest building in Canada to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified. On top of its 'super green' construction will be a roof comprised of grass-like vegetation and knee-high plants that will look like a green meadow. This will add campus and community greenspace and help create a tight building envelop, thereby lowering the demands on the heating and cooling systems ...
