RARE - Alkan (arr. Ronald Smith) 1970 - Concerto for Solo Piano - 1st mvt
One of my prized records, I hope all you Alkan enthusiasts like this one. Recorded in 1970 in Wigmore Hall on a Steinway concert grand K22. This is NOT the same recording from his complete set of opus 39 etudes, which was released in 1977. In this movement, Smith made his own arrangement of much of the development and shortened the work (Alkan himself offers a 40 page cut). Personally, after many repeated listenings, I find Smith's arrangement to work, perhaps even better than the original, in that it takes away largely from architectural problems that arise from the original, and also gives the concerto an audience-friendly length.

Charles Valentin Alkan (30.11.1813 - 29.3.1888) - Prelude Op. 31 No 13 - J'etais endormie, mais mon coeur veillait ("I fell asleep, but my heart stood watch") Happy birthday to Alkan, my favourite composer! This is a (half-sight read) recording i made way back for my practice medley, but the piece is still not uploaded on youtube, so i think it's alright. Besides, i encourage you to check out my Alkan Nocturne Op. 22 recording, a beautiful piece and one of my best performances. I've got some big things planned for playing Alkan in the future: I'm practicing Grande Sonate Op. 33 - 40 ans right now (heartbreaking/warming!), i want to do the Concerto Da Camera Op. 10/1 piano solo transcription in the near future (just ordered the score) and for 2013, Alkan's bicentennial anniversary, i intend to put together a big program with one of Alkan's grand pieces. In the mean time, his various miniatures (Preludes, Esquisses, etc) provide more than enough playable material. Happy New Year! Thank you for posting congratulations to my new video. I'll comment to some later. I also made a video, using the recent Concerto, with the cut maybe created by Alkan himself. It is written on the first-published score(Richalt, Paris 1857, later re-published by Dover, also available on IMSLP).He shorten this gigantic work into only 12 minutes, a suitable concert piece. Someone says it is the style of Fantasie. I made the recording because no formal recordings available. Please allow the unpleasant tone joint. Like my original Concerto, I only cut and paste with the newly recorded joint-part(8:13).

Canon - Charles-Valentin Alkan
"Canon (à l'Octave)" (No. 3 from Op.65 Troisième Recueil de Chants). Composed by Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-88) for solo piano, published 1864. I think dynamic control is the main challenge in this canon, as well as enunciating each phrase properly. An interesting experiment I think would be to make the response (left hand) dominate the call (at least in some parts), since there are slightly more accents marking it, even though that may not have been Alkan's intention in the first place. Certainly, bringing out the left hand melody seems necessary to end the canon properly. The outer sections weren't as fast as I imagined, but it's not easy either.

Sadly, his dream was never realized, though he did write down some religious pieces, such as this piece based off the Psalm 137. "The aspect of Alkan that is most apparent when people who don't know him listen to him for the first time is that his music is difficult to play... But in a way, I wish that it did not take a formidable technique to play... This etude is mainly transcribed with theme and style from Alkan's Grande Etude op. 76 no. 3, Rondo Toccata (hands-reunited) for right hand and Etude op. 39 no 7, Symphony for Piano Solo: Finale for left hand. But, there are some variations included (a little from Le Festin d'Esope).
