City of Plovdiv - Ancient and Eternal (Part 1)

Plovdiv, Bulgaria`s second largest city. It`s one of the oldest still living European cities - contemporary to Troy (Turkey), older than Rome (Italy) and Athens (Greece). It keeps thousands monuments from prehistoric times - 8 000 years ago, from the time when Alexander the Great called it Philipopolis - in memory of his father Philip - 4 cBC, from the days it was capital of the Thracian kingdom - till 45 AD Roman theater, stadium, odeon, mosaics, Renaissance houses and islamic, orthodox, catholic and Jewish temples adorn the city, which is geological, botanical, archaeological, historical and architectural reserve. Many travelers, for example Evliya Cheleby from the 17 c. call it the most beautiful of all Balkan cities... It is indeed!

Religion in the Changing World: Ancient and Modern

In today's world, where religious differences are highlighted more frequently than religious similarities, Emory provides perspectives from multiple faith traditions. Luke Timothy Johnson (Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins) earned the prestigious Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion in 2011 for his book Among the Gentiles: Greco-Roman Religion and Christianity, which provided a new way of thinking about early Christianity by showing that Christians, Jews, and pagans of ancient Rome and Greece shared certain ways of being religious regardless of their differences. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im (Charles Howard Candler Professor of Law) is a leading authority on Islam and human rights within secular and pluralistic societies. As the revolutionary spirit sweeps the Arab world, reformers in Africa and the Middle East are desperately seeking answers to the questions of religious law versus secular law. Because of his personal experience in this area -- he is a Muslim from Northern Sudan -- and his scholarship in this area, he has become a worldwide spokesperson on the importance of America's model of religious freedom. Jan Love is Dean of the Candler School of Theology. She is an internationally recognized leader in church and ecumenical arenas and a scholar of world politics, particularly issues of religion and politics, conflict transformation, globalization, and ecumenism.

ROME Ancient and Synchronous - AMLETO Franco Faccio

Franco Faccio (March 8, 1840 July 21, 1891) was an Italian composer and conductor. Born in Verona, Faccio became known as a conductor of Verdi's music. He studied music in Milan and after finishing his studies began his career as a composer, writing I Profughi Fiamminghi (Milan, 1863) and Amleto (Genoa, 1865), the latter being one of the many operas based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Both operas failed to achieve success either among the critics or the general public. However the Marcia Funebre composed for the Amleto is considered as an important example of Faccio's lyricism. Its popularity is made evident by its transcriptions for wind band in late 19th century. One can still listen to this part of the opera in Corfu during Easter, where the band of Philarmonic Society of Corfu performs it during the epitaph litany of St. Spyridon in the morning of Holy Saturday. Conductor Anthony Barese edited Amleto's score in 2004 and presented the work on stage, thereby allowing a re-evaluation of its merits. Barese has also presented the marcia funebre with the Dallas Opera Young Artists' Symphony Orchestra. In 1867 Faccio became director of the Milan Conservatory and in 1872 he was nominated director of Milan's Teatro alla Scala. Faccio conducted the first performance of Verdi's Otello (1887), which starred his long-time lover Romilda Pantaleoni as Desdemona, Francesco Tamagno as Otello and Victor Maurel as Iago. He also conducted Otello in its London premiere with Tamagno ...

Handmade brick production for restoration of ancient and historic buildings.

Hand-made bricks are produced at a high rate by thrusting clay into a wooden frame on a metal baseplate. The worker is paid peace-rate, ie paid by the number of bricks produced. All stages of the process are by hand in a traditional fashion little changed since Roman times. The clay and material used can be adjusted to produce bricks that match a particular building, so allowing resoration to preserve the appearance. These bricks are used by English Heritage and the National Trust.

Ancient and Modern London

n this episode I wanted to contrast the fresh new architecture in the the City of London with the much older buildings around and about. The LLTV camera takes us to Bishopsgate (Primrose Street) to look at the contrasting architectures of two buildings - one, Broadgate Tower, a few months old and and the other a church more than 250 years old. We step from the modern public space of Exchange Square with sculptures and waterfalls behind Liverpool Street station to the church of St-Botolph's-Without-Bishopsgate built in the mid 1700s and full of ornate religious paintings an icons, where we attend a wedding ceremony!

Doña Gracia Nasi Mendes

Gracia Nasi was born into an ancient and venerable sephardic family that immigrated to Portugal when Spain expelled its Jews in 1492. Along with the thousands of other sephardic refugees of the Spanish Inquisition, the family was forcibly converted to Christianity by the Portuguese king in 1497. These converted Jews were known by the gentiles as "Conversos" or "New Christians". The sephardic people called them "Anusim" (the forced ones). Being suspected by the inquisition Gracia escapes to Italy and from Italy to Istanbul, where she buys the cities of Tiberia, Gaza, Jaffo, Safed and Jerusalem. She builds a trade fleet and organizes embargos on the catholic countries saving the lives of sephardic people. She died in 1569 and was buried in Jerusalem

Alleluia Sing To Jesus Hymn - Gods Country, QVT Productions

William Dix wrote "Alleluia! Sing to Jesus" as a communion hymn for Ascension Sunday. This hymn was originally called "Redemption through the Precious Blood" and was inspired by Revelation 5:9 This hymn, although usually presented with three verses, has a fourth verse, and also originally repeated the first verse at the end, giving it five verses total. It was first published by Dix in Altar Songs, Verses on the Holy Eucharist, 1867. A year later it was included in the Appendix of Hymns Ancient and Modern, with a tune specifically written for it by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, called Alleluia. This tune is still preferred by Hymns Ancient and Modern, but it is seldom sung today. The 1909 edition had a different tune, Adoration, by B. Luard Selby, but this tune is not found in any modern hymnal. The tune to which it is most commonly sung is Hyfrydol, written by Rowland H. Prichard.

Academy scientists recently named a new species of chimaera, an ancient and bizarre group of fishes distantly related to sharks, from the coast of Southern California and Baja California, Mexico. The new species, the Eastern Pacific black ghostshark (Hydrolagus melanophasma), was described in the September issue of the international journal Zootaxa by a research team including Academy Research Associates David Ebert (also with Moss Landing Marine Laboratories) and Douglas J. Long (also with the Oakland Museum of California). Additional co-authors included Kelsey James, a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and Dominique Didier from Millersville University in Pennsylvania. This is the first new species of cartilaginous fish to be described from California waters since 1947.
