The Andes: World's Longest Mountain Range

Tucked away in the high reaches of the Andes mountains, along the border between Bolivia and Peru, lies one of the highest regions inhabited by people anywhere in the world. Here in the "altiplano" farmers raise sheep, llamas and alpacas, as they have for thousands of years. But unlike most farmlands, the altiplano is surrounded by jagged mountains, volcanic peaks that drop steeply down to deserts in some places, to rain forests in others, and on the western side, to a deep trench of the Pacific Ocean. The Andes are the longest mountain range in the world, stretching 7250 kilometers (4200 miles) down the southern half of the world. The Andes run north to the warm equator, and stretch south towards Cape Horn and Patagonia, a windy, cold, semi-desert where the winter temperatures stay below freezing. The southern tip of the Andes is not far from Antartica, home of the south pole! The name "Andes" comes from a native word whose meaning is unkown today. The tallest peak is Mt. Aconcagua, a giant volcano towering 6959 meters (22831 feet) above sea level. The Andes mountains have been formed by one of the crustal plates of the Pacific ocean floor pushing slowly against the American continental plate. This pressure has caused the sedimentary rocks to bend and fold up into long ridges, called "sierras." Where the sedimentary rocks cracked, molten granite and igneous rocks erupted from below as volcanoes, caused by the oceanic plate melting from the friction and exploding to the ...

El Condor Pasa - Sonido de Los Andes

This is a live performance on the Midday Show 1987.

El Condor Pasa Sonido de Los Andes

Viven: El Accidente de Los Andes 1972 ... 1/11

It is one of the most astonishing and inspiring survival tales of all time. On October 13, 1972, a young rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay, boarded a plane for a match in Chile—and then vanished into thin air. Two days before Christmas, 16 of the 45 passengers miraculously resurfaced. They had managed to survive for 72 days after their plane crashed on a remote Andean glacier. Thirty-five years later, the survivors return to the crash site—known as the Valley of Tears—to recount their harrowing story of defiant endurance and indestructible friendship. Previously documented in the 1973 worldwide bestseller Alive (and the 1993 Ethan Hawke movie of the same name), this shocking true story finally gets the cinematic treatment it deserves. Visually breathtaking and crafted with riveting detail by documentary filmmaker (and childhood friend of the survivors) Gonzalo Arijón with a masterful combination of on-location interviews, archival footage and reenactments, Stranded is by turns hauntingly powerful and spiritually moving.

Condorcanqui - Grupo Andes

More folk music from around the world, I love the stereo effect of the two larger pipes calling each other in this track. It brings to mind a happy, frivolous mood. I have tried to convey a mood of dancing and movement in the deep pipe sequence and the soaring of a condor with the beauty of the mountains in the calm sequence. What ever you think of the video you cannot take away the pure soul touching sound of the rhythms and tunes of South America and Andian music. It's a track called "Condorcanqui" from a CD by Grupo Andes I brought from Lima, Peru. Please enjoy it. I do not own the muisc or pictures and make no profit from this.

Underwater Anomalies in the Andes of Peru

I have run across some very interesting anomalies in lakes throughout the Andes Mountains in Peru. The images come from Google Earth and can be seen by anyone using this wonderful application. I came across these "Unidentified Underwater Anomalies - UWA's" while researching various places in the mountain region of Peru. As you probably know, there are quite a number of ancient ruins such as Machu Picchu that have been inhabited by the Inca and civilizations much older than the Inca. The photo album "Unidentified Underwater Anomalies" located at creatorsdream.com currently has sixteen photos showing these UWA's near Lake Titicaca. The other location which I found UWA's is in the northern central andes about 200 miles north-east of Lima. What I found will make you wonder just what the heck is going on with these images. Are they for real? What is it that we are actually looking at here. Some of these images almost look like computer boards. Some look like buildings with streets, houses and corridors. One of the images looks as though the walls have crumbled in sections and even shows a section that is dismembered and has moved several feet from its original location. I have yet to determine what I'm seeing in Google Earth and would like to hear what you think these anomalies might be. Therefore, I've included a .kmz file and additional information about what these UWA's on the creatorsdream.com web site at creatorsdream.com

Legendary Moto Guzzi V7 in Bolivian Andes

A 33 year old Moto Guzzi V7 is bouncing its way through the Bolivian Andes during X-mas. It was a tough but beautiful five-days ride. Seeing the Rio Grande was alucinante. I travel for almost three years with the Guzzi, but this ride was special. My passenger was Anne, a nice, funny, blonde Dutch woman. I film only with a little Canon Powershot. So excuses for the lack of colours.

El Condor Pasa - Grupo Andes

A version of El Condor Pasa by a group called "Grupo Andes" which I heard and picked up in Lima, Peru. I always imagine blowing into the pipes in the middle of the tune when ever I hear it. So I thought I would add pictures instead. Folk music from another country and what great music it is too. The fact such haunting and soul touching music can be made from a collection of reeds always gets me. And the range from deep, deep bass to such height's , brilliant. I do not own the music, or photos, or much in life really, except the memories of beautiful countries and tunes such as these. Anyway, enjoy.

I Am Alive: Surviving The Andes Plane Crash

Throughout history, the most harrowing stories of human survival--like that of the Donner Party in the 1840s--have involved people whose only means of staying alive was to cannibalize the deceased around them. On Friday the 13th of October, 1972, just such a story began when a charter plane carrying 45 rugby team members crashed in the remote Andes Mountains. For 72 days, the world thought they were dead. But what 16 survivors endured was far worse than death, driven to what would become headline-making acts of cannibalism in their struggle for life.

documentary on the andes

Short documentary about the Andes. The Andes is South America's longest mountain range, forming a continuous chain of highland along the western coast of South America. It is over 7000 km (4400 miles) long, 500 km (300 miles) wide in some parts (widest between 18° to 20°S latitude), and of an average height of about 4000 m (13000 ft). The Andean range is composed principally of two great ranges, the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Occidental, often separated by a deep intermediate depression, in which arise other chains of minor importance, the chief of which is Chile's Cordillera de la Costa. Other small chains arise on the sides of the great chains. The Cordillera de la Costa starts from the southern extremity of the continent and runs in a northerly direction, parallel with the coast, being broken up at its beginning into a number of islands and afterwards forming the western boundary of the great central valley of Chile. To the north this coastal chain continues in small ridges or isolated hills along the Pacific Ocean as far as Venezuela, always leaving the same valley more or less visible to the west of the western great chain. The mountains extend over seven countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, some of which are known as Andean States. One theory says the name Andes comes from the Quechua word anti, which means "high crest". Another theory says that the name Andes derived from the Spanish word "andén" which means ...

Great Railway Journeys - The High Andes to Patagonia

Complete episode originally aired Sept. 25, 1996. Great Railway Journeys was a recurring series of travel documentaries produced. In each episode a presenter, typically a figure from the arts or media, would make a train journey, usually through a country or to a destination with which they had a personal connection. "The High Andes to Patagonia" originally aired on September 25, 1996. See my other video - Greatest Little Railways - which had more serious aesthetic, production, and commentary attributes than this one. "Patagonia" is a light fun travel show by comparison, but both videos are meaningful and entertaining in their own way. See en.wikipedia.org

Atlantis in the Andes- Pt. 2

This documents the work of an English cartographer/satellite photo interpreter named Jim Allen - who has taken the two dialogues that Plato wrote about Atlantis literally. He has used modern technology and his understanding of ancient measurement systems to locate and area of the world that he believes matches Plato's physical descriptions of Atlantis. In a nutshell, he places the capitol of the empire in Bolivia - and he believes that the entire continent of South America is, in fact, Atlantis. He does have an interesting theory -and he has found some remarkable evidence to strengthen his claim. Ancient Atlantis? Two miles above sea level? Seems impossible but there are many archaeologists working in the Bolivian Altiplano to prove it! The ancient Urus who are regarded as the oldest native tribes carried on a legend of their ancestors whose glorious city sunk under water when the people displeased the gods. People sometimes say; "How can Atlantis be in the Andes when it is supposed to have sunk into the sea?" We must remember that Atlantis according to Plato was on a level plain "high above the level of the sea and surrounded by mountains". In fact the entire plain has been periodically submerged beneath the sea ie it became a giant inland sea at various dates going back thousands of years succeeded by dry periods. "Legend has it that a vast subterranean network exists in the Andes. This would infer engineering skill of the highest calibre which the early inhabitants of ...
