The idea is to process deals and report the best available prices to the public as quickly as possible. But there are other ways of investing that operate outside the national market system. In the late nineteen nineties, the Securities and Exchange Commission wanted to make room for new ideas in financial trading. The commission developed new rules for exchanges and for what are known as alternative trading systems. Alternative trading systems are operated by brokers or dealers. They mainly serve big investors like retirement funds, universities and financial companies. These systems trade the same public stocks as other market players do. But they do not publicly report their trades. This secrecy explains why they also have another name: "dark pools." As of October, there were eighty-six alternative trading systems registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.A buy or sell order for a large amount of stock can move markets. It can influence other investors to try to buy or sell shares of that same stock. Supporters of alternative trading systems say the secrecy reduces the risk of a disorderly market. I have several categories, and we classify them and categorize them for a reason. There are angel investors and angel investor groups. There are venture capital funds, commonly referred to as "VC's". We also have private equity funding sources. Then there are hedge funds; additionally private investors. Then we have a category called "other", which pretty much encompasses all other accredited investors, that would be investors of significant net worth and sophistication to make investments on their own. Now, what is important here, as a capital seeker you need to understand the differences between capital providers. They're very specific. And secondly, you need to be able to identify the source that you need to target for your particular capital needs. Now, getting in front of the right capital provider is paramount to getting your company funded. So, what we're looking for here is, the key is efficiencies. Don't waste time chasing the wrong kind of money, and don't waste money doing that either. The thing you need to be doing is running your business. So, take the most efficient route to capital. When raising a round of angel financing, most entrepreneurs typically will want to target very wealthy super angels who they don't know. This is very hard, especially if you are an unproven entrepreneur. The vast majority of money raised during the early stages comes from individuals the entrepreneur already knows and people they know. While you may not think you have angel investors in your network, you may be surprised. Start with friends and family and then go to LinkedIn and start with individuals directly connected to you. Perhaps, you can find someone who sold a business, inherited money or has just done well over the years. Look at who they are connected to. Once you get your angel in, ask him to invite his friends. This is how most angel rounds come together.
