Annette Hanshaw - Lover Come Back To Me (1929)

Annette Hanshaw (oct.18.1901 - mar.13.1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters. Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper. ---------------------------------------------------- Eddie Lang (okt.25,1902 - mar.26,1933) He was the first Jazz guitar virtuoso. A boyhood friend of Joe Venuti, Lang took violin lessons for 11 years but switched to guitar before he turned professional in 1924 with the Mound City Blue Blowers. He was soon in great demand for recording dates, both in the jazz world and in pop settings. His sophisticated European sounding chord patterns made him a unique accompanist, but he was also a fine soloist. from "The New Moon" Annette Hanshaw - Lover Come Back To Me 3-15-1929 Columbia 1769-D

Annette Hanshaw - Under The Moon (1932)

Annette Hanshaw was a popular singer and radio star of the 1920s and early Thirties who had many Jazz overtones in her singing style. She stepped out of her role of a torch singer and improvised and had a great deal of swing that harkened to the Big Band singers of the 1930s. She was viewed by the public as the epitome of a flapper. Many of her early records feature many of the hot White players of the day like Red Nichols, Miff Mole, Phil Napoleon, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Adrian Rollini, Vic Berton, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey and Jack Teagarden. Hanshaw was billed as "The Personality Girl," and her trademark was girlishly saying "That's all" at the end of a lot of her records. Hanshaw recorded under a number of pseudonyms which included Ethel Bingham, Dot Dare, Gay Ellis, Marion Lee, Janet Shaw, Lelia Sandford and Patsy Young. Annette never thought much of her abilities as a singer and retired from showbiz in 1935. Joe Venuti was born on a ship on the way to the USA from Italy and became, in many circles, THE great jazz violinist. Eddie Lang (who was also known as Blind Willie Dunn) was a boyhood friend of Venuti, and was the first great jazz guitarist. Lang died in 1933 as the result of a botched tonsillectomy, which operation had been taken at the urging of his friend, Bing Crosby. Eddie Lang (October 25, 1902 - March 26, 1933) was an American jazz guitarist, considered by many[citation needed] to be the finest of his era, and to be the greatest rhythm ...

Song from the Bioshock 2 Trailer performed by Mrs. Annette Hanshaw. Wonderful choice if you ask me. Sorry that I put it up only jet but it has taken a while to find the song. Lyrics: When night is creepin' And I should be sleepin' in bed If you were peepin' You'd find that I'm weepin' instead My lovin' daddy left his baby again Said he'd come back but he forgot to say when Night after night, I'm cryin' Daddy, won't you please come home? Daddy won't you please come home? I'm so lonesome No one can fill that vacant chair Home isn't home when you're not there No need to knock, the door is open for you Please, daddy Even the clock keeps tickin' Daddy won't you please come home? Daddy do you have to roam so very long? There's lots of other new sheiks who would like to be sheikin' Haven't slipped yet, but I'm liable to weaken Daddy, daddy, won't you please come home? Please, daddy Even the clock keeps tickin' Daddy won't you please come home? Daddy do you have to roam so very long? There's lots of other new sheiks who would like to be sheikin' Haven't slipped yet, but I'm liable to weaken Daddy, daddy, won't you please come home? That's all

These two selections are the best sounding of a batch of homemade recordings that Annette Hanshaw did. Her husband copied them onto a tape for a friend of mine. I don't know when they were made but on one of the records she refers to "Steve Cochran's looks". He was a big movie star for a couple of years around 1950. So that's a hint. Unfortunately the sound on the others is pretty bad. I sent a copy of this to Transformingart who did a great job improving the sound - check it out.

Annette Hanshaw - Get Out and Get Under the Moon

1928 What do you do in the evening, When you don't know what to do? Read a book, play a game, Every night it's just the same! What do you say if I tell you How to keep from feeling blue, My advice is good to take, And it's easier to do. When you're all alone, any old night, And you're feeling out of tune, Pick up your hat, close up your flat, Get out and get under the moon! Underneath the bright, silvery light, You'll be feeling better soon, Pick up your hat, close up your flat, Get out and get under the moon! Ooh-ooh! Look at those stars above! Look, look, look at those sweeties love, Oh, boy, give me a night in June! I mean that, all you gotta do, any old night, When you're feeling out of tune, Pick up your hat, close up your flat, Get out and get under the moon! When you're all alone, any old night, And you're feeling out of tune, Just pick up your hat, close up your flat, Get out under the moon! Underneath the bright, silvery light, You'll be feeling better soon, So pick up your hat, close up your flat, Get out under the moon! Take your girl for an auto ride, Make your girl cuddle by your side, On a beautiful night in June! --will make her love you! You can park your car wherever you are, And if she won't kiss you soon, Just tell her this: "I'm sorry, miss!" Get out and get under the moon!

Annette Hanshaw - I Want to Be Bad

1929 To be or not to be - That is not the question! I decided long ago to be! With me, it's what to be, Make me some suggestions, Good or bad, Which is the best for me? When you're after fun and laughter, this aggravates you, Some reformer says a warmer climate awaits you! If it's naughty to rouge your lips, Shake your shoulders and twist your hips, Let a lady confess, I wanna be bad! And if it's naughty to vamp the men, Sleep each morning till after ten, Then the answer is yes, I wanna be bad! This thing of being a good little goodie is all very well, But what can you do if you're loaded with plenty of health And vigor. When you're learning what lips are for, If it's naughty to ask for more, Well let a lady confess, I wanna be bad! Bop-buh-da-daddle-dah-da-dah-da Bop-buh-daddle-do-doodle-do If it's naughty to rouge your lips, Shake your shoulders and twist your hips, Let a lady confess, wanna be bad! Bad girl, I do! And if it's naughty to vamp the men, Sleep each morning till after ten, Then the answer is yes, I'm gonna be a bad, bad girl! While all around me they tell how terribly naughty I am, Boop-boop-be-doop! Nobody's caring and nobody's giving a damn! Sel credit! If it's wrong to let someone take, Just a little kiss by mistake, Well let a lady confess, I wanna be bad!

If there's a problem watching this video, type &fmt=18 at the end of the URL at the top of the page. I recently posted a couple of home recordings made by Annette Hanshaw around 1950. They were copied onto tape by her husband for a friend of mine. The two which I posted were the only ones in decent sound. I've had a number of requests for more, so, despite the horrible sound, here they are. She doesn't seem to be as careful here as on the others, but any Annette is worth hearing.

Having grown tired of show business, in the late 1930s Hanshaw retired and settled into married life with her husband, Pathé Records executive Herman "Wally" Rose. Later in life, in a would-be comeback, she recorded two demo records, but they were never released. Between September 1926 and February 1934, she recorded prolifically.
