Byrd's First Antarctic Expedition 1928

Byrd Antarctic Expedition 1928. Richard E. Byrd "In 1928, Admiral Byrd began his first expedition to the Antarctic involving two ships, and three airplanes: Byrd's Flagship was The City of New York; a Ford Trimotor called the Floyd Bennett (named after the recently deceased pilot of Byrd's previous expeditions); a Fairchild FC-2W2, NX8006, built 1928, named "Stars And Stripes" (now displayed at the Virginia Aviation Museum, on loan from the National Air and Space Museum); and a Fokker Universal monoplane called the Virginia (Byrd's birth state). A base camp named "Little America" was constructed on the Ross Ice Shelf and scientific expeditions by snowshoe, dog-sled, snowmobile, and airplane began. Photographic expeditions and geological surveys were undertaken for the duration of that summer, and constant radio communications were maintained with the outside world. After their first winter, their expeditions were resumed, and on 28 November 1929, the famous flight to the South Pole and back was launched. Byrd, along with pilot Bernt Balchen, co-pilot/radioman Harold June, and photographer Ashley McKinley, flew the Ford Trimotor to the South Pole and back in 18 hours, 41 minutes. They had difficulty gaining enough altitude, and they had to dump empty gas tanks, as well as their emergency supplies, in order to achieve the altitude of the Polar Plateau. However, the flight was successful, and it entered Byrd into the history books. After a further summer of exploration, the ...

Antarctic - Original Piano Solo composed by Gene Emerson (14)

Antarctic - original composition for piano solo composed by Gene Emerson in February 2012. Copyright Protected All Rights Reserved 2012. Embodies the Earth's southernmost continent, Antarctic is the coldest place on Earth. Desolate, silent, mysterious and beautiful. Although it appears lifeless, it has blue whales, orcas, penguins, colossal squids and fur seals. The amazing and unbelievable Emperor penguin, the tallest ( stand up to 122cm ) and heaviest penguin, is the only penguin that can withstand the harsh and extreme Antarctic cold for more than two months in order to breed without food or leaving the 'nest'. To compose this piece, the Antarctic has been the source of inspiration for me, however like many people, I am deeply worried about it's future that link to the future of our globe. I have called my composition: Antarctic, solely to express my emotion, anxiety and the hope towards this great and magnificent region and its amazingly beautiful and wonderful wild life.

Antarctic Lake Drilling Race Nears Close as Russians Drill Through Ice

Drill, baby, drill! Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom are racing to see who can reach an ancient lake buried two and a half miles beneath Antarctica's ice. The 14-million-year-old Lake Vostok has been sealed off from the surface of the earth for millennia, and holds water that could also be ancient—flowing between a network of subglacial lakes. As such, the body of water, which is roughly the same size as Lake Ontario, may be home to cold-loving organisms that have developed unique evolutionary devices. While the Russians are extremely close to breaking through with a thermal drill, they won't be able to sample the water until late 2012. That's great and everything, but didn't we learn anything about disturbing the secrets of the Antarctic continent from movies like The Thing and Alien Vs. Predator?

Antarctic Ice Marathon 2011 (Official Video)

More than 40 competitors from 15 countries gathered on the frozen continent to take part in the world's southernmost half-marathon, marathon and ultramarathon races. The Antarctic Ice Marathon races are the only official foot races within the Antarctic Circle on the mainland continent. On 1 December 2011, Clement Thevenet (FRA) dominated the men's marathon (42.195km) distance when running a record time of 3:47:07. In amazingly bright sunshine and temperatures of -18C, the Frenchman led from start to finish to take the title ahead of the USA's Alvin Matthews and Matthew Von Ertfelda. Yvonne Brown (GBR) was a worthy winner of the women's race in 4:26:10, finishing ahead of two previous North Pole Marathon winners, Emer Dooley (IRL) and Alison Hamlett (GBR). NASA: Full Map of Antarctic Ice Flow [720p]

NASA-funded researchers have created the first complete map of the speed and direction of ice flow in Antarctica. The map, which shows glaciers flowing thousands of miles from the continent's deep interior to its coast, will be critical for tracking future sea-level increases from climate change. The team created the map using integrated radar observations from a consortium of international satellites. "This is like seeing a map of all the oceans' currents for the first time. It's a game changer for glaciology," said Eric Rignot of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and the University of California (UC), Irvine. Rignot is lead author of a paper about the ice flow published online Thursday in Science Express. "We are seeing amazing flows from the heart of the continent that had never been described before." Rignot and UC Irvine scientists Jeremie Mouginot and Bernd Scheuchl used billions of data points captured by European, Japanese and Canadian satellites to weed out cloud cover, solar glare and land features masking the glaciers. With the aid of NASA technology, the team painstakingly pieced together the shape and velocity of glacial formations, including the previously uncharted East Antarctica, which comprises 77 percent of the continent. Like viewers of a completed jigsaw puzzle, the scientists were surprised when they stood back and took in the full picture. They discovered a new ridge splitting the 5.4 million-square-mile (14 million-square ...

NASA | Surprise Shrimp Under Antarctic Ice

At a depth of 600 feet beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet, a small shrimp-like creature managed to brighten up an otherwise gray polar day in late November 2009. This critter is a three-inch long Lyssianasid amphipod found beneath the Ross Ice Shelf, about 12.5 miles away from open water. NASA scientists were using a borehole camera to look back up towards the ice surface when they spotted this pinkish-orange creature swimming beneath the ice. Scientists Capture Giant Antarctic Sea Creatures

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Scientists studying Antarctic waters have filmed and captured giant sea creatures never seen before. They saw sea spiders the size of dinner plates and jelly fish with six meter long tentacles. They also filmed other unknown species of sea life. Here's more. STORY A fleet of three Antarctic marine research ships returned to Australia this week ending a summer expedition to the Southern Ocean where they carried out a census of life in the icy ocean and on its floor more than one kilometer below the surface. [Martin Riddle, Marine Scientist Doctor]: "A huge diversity of life, very colorful, very rich, far exceeding any of our expectations." The three ships, the Aurora Australia, France's L'Astrolabe and Japan's Umitaka Maru all docked in Hobart on Australia's southern island state of Tasmania. Their decks are full of an array of sea life including unknown species of sea creatures collected near the eastern Antarctic land mass. [Martin Riddle, Marine Scientist Doctor]: "There are forces happening in the world, in the atmosphere and in the ocean that are going to change even this the Antarctic and the southern ocean, so it is really important now to have baseline so that we know what we have got now, so that we can identify whether it is changing and put in place measures to protect it before it is lost." The Australian Antarctic Division expedition will help scientists monitor the impact of environmental change in Antarctic waters.
