On the Farthest Shores

www.wcs.org On the Farthest Shores Each May, millions of shorebirds and waterfowl migrate from every continent and every ocean to breed on the immense wetlands of Arctic Alaska's coastal plain. These winged visitors include buff-breasted sandpipers from South America, bar-tailed godwits from New Zealand, Arctic terns from Antarctica, and dunlin from Asia. But expanding oil concessions and climate change are transforming the Arctic, and with it, this timeworn nesting ground is changing, too. WCS-North America conservationists follow the birds each spring to these farthest of shores, to study the impacts on their habitat and help ensure their future.

Birds & gray whales eat fish eggs

Birds Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Aves There are about 30 orders of birds, including 180 families and about 9000 species. They arose from a dinosaur lineage, and still retain scaly reptilian-like skin on their legs. The majority of a bird's anatomy is an adaptation for flight: their forelimbs are modified into wings, they have a unique 'one-way' breathing system, light but strong hollow bones, a skeleton in which many bones are fused or lost, powerful flight muscles and feathers. Birds lay eggs which they brood until the chicks hatch. The level of parental care varies according to species. Cuckoos are a famous example of birds who don't expend effort in raising their chicks whereas some birds of prey spend many months feeding and protecting their young. Of the 9000 bird species only 350 are true sea birds. These include penguins, puffins, divers, albatrosses, petrels, pelicans, cormorants and gulls. There are about 17 species of penguin (Sphenisformes) and they have become so well adapted to marine life that they have lost the power of flight. They have a streamlined bullet-like shape, and wings that have modified to become flippers. Penguins have an awkward, waddling gait on land, but in the sea they are graceful and they effectively fly underwater. Most of the 129 species in the gull and auk order (Charadriiformes) are seabirds, and include skuas, terns and puffins. Many representatives of the Pelecaniformes order are marine, including pelicans, gannets ...

Winged Migration (2001) Нүүдэлийн шувуу баримтат кино

This documentary follows several species of migratory birds over a four year filming period. These birds travel several hundreds if not thousands of miles toward the equator in the autumn, and make the return journey to their higher latitude summer homes in the spring, always taking the same route, using the natural compasses of the universe, the stars, to find their way. Some species, like the arctic tern, even fly from pole to pole. These long and often torturous treks are a matter of survival, to live in a hospitable climate and find sources of food. With the exception of migratory penguins, travel over oceans is especially difficult as the birds have little refuge unless there is something floating on the water, such as a ship, on which to land. Otherwise they must continue flying until they reach land. Some will not survive the migration due to predators, including man, illness or injury... www.imdb.com

TEDxUCLA_REBECA_MENDEZ_Circumpolar.mov

TEDxUCLA speaker Rebeca Méndez speaks about her project, Circumpolar, which follows the Arctic Tern, a small sea bird that flies from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again each year, always chasing the summer, which makes it the one creature on earth that receives the most day light in its lifetime. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Reef Reborn - Into the Unseen World

DVD available at: www.longtailnet.com Most of Balis coral reefs have been destroyed, and lie tortured and lifeless on the sea bed. Coral bleaching and a deadly combination of explosives and cyanide fishing have wiped out the reefs and much of the marine life that once teemed around them. This program presents the fascinating story of a determined Balinese community and two marine scientists who have invented a revolutionary new technology called mineral accretion, which rebuilds coral reefs up to five times faster than they would naturally occur. These important marine ecosystems could soon be brought back to life to once again shelter a magnificent array of exotic marine life.

Paradise Drowned: Tuvalu — The Disappearing Nation

DVD available at: www.longtailnet.com Tuvalu has the dubious distinction of being the worlds most endangered country, a Pacific Island paradise suffering from the effects of rising sea levels caused by global-warming. Does Tuvalu have a future? Is the rest of the world powerless to help the first victims of a global affliction? In Paradise Drowned we follow a nations plight against the sea. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has released a report that that there is absolutely no doubt that the sea will rise about a metre in the next one hundred years because of global warming caused by industrial pollution. Yet many scientists are saying that this is quite wrong and totally misleading. The sea will not rise. This is the dilemma facing this tiny Pacific nation, perhaps the first country in the world to disappear off the face of it as the rest of the world watches. To go or to stay. For the elderly its an easy choice. Its much harder for the young.

Stromness - South Georgia

There was a beautiful dusting of snow on the mountain peaks as we sailed into Stromness, the former whaling station where Shackleton finally made contact with the outside world after his 16-month ordeal in the pack ice! Stromness was first established in 1912 as one of the six shore-based whaling stations found on South Georgia. We landed on a dark shingle beach that was coated with male fur seals guarding their territories, and tiny dark brown pups that were busy exploring their new world, at least when they could tear themselves away from their busy schedule of napping. A herd of reindeer grazed on the grassy floodplain, while Antarctic terns (who attacked me when I got too close to the nests) made use of the gravel areas between stream channels as nesting sites.

Discovery & Challenging Antarctica - Solid Water Liquid Rock

DVD Available at: www.longtailnet.com Ice and fire meet dramatically on the worlds most southern volcano Antarcticas Mount Erebus. This film is an adventurous journey from the base of the volcano 300m under the sea to inside the erupting crater 3500m above sea level. See this extreme landscape, revealed as never before. As the film journeys from the volcanos base to its summit, we will compare the formation of ice crystals from water and snow with the formation of crystalline rock for lava. We start 1500 feet underwater, where the previously unseen sea floor will be revealed by TVNZs Remote Operated Vehicle. There should be a covering of fine volcanic sediment carried off Erebus by glaciers, and there will be strange creatures, including giant sponges, giant sea-spiders, and fish which use anti-freeze to survive in the sub-zero water. We trek to the summit at 12500 feet. Because the atmosphere is thinner near the South Pole it is like breathing the air on a 15000 feet mountain difficult. Anytime the temperature rises to minus 30 degrees Celsius it is a warm day.

Gentoo Penguins in Anractic Peninsula: www.voicesdelaluna.com

The video is made by Mo H Saidi for Voices de la Luna: A Quarterly Poetrry & Arts Magazine. Introduction to Antarctica; Adapted from: faculty.umf.maine.edu. For more information, visit http Antarctica is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on earth. An ice sheet covers all but 2.4 percent of Antarctica's 14 million square kilometers. At its thickest point the ice sheet is 4776 meters deep and averages 2, 160 meters thick. This is 90 percent of all the world's ice and it is 70 percent of all the world's fresh water. There are lots of penguins, whales, seals, krill (the main food for whales), and even fish in Antarctica's waters, but there are no land mammals and, as far as scientists know, no native peoples. Eskimos and polar bears are found in the ARCTIC, not the Antarctic. There are many different species of penguins in Antarctica, including the huge and colorful emperor penguin, the smaller Adelie, the gentoo, the chinstrap penguin, the rockhopper, the king, the macaroni and more. In all there are 21 species of penguin scattered throughout the southern hemisphere. Penguins are great swimmers. They can swim so fast, if they're trying, for instance, to escape the jaws of a leopard seal that they can shoot out of the water 7 feet into the air onto a safe ice floe. Seals in Antarctic waters include the Weddell seal, the Ross seal, the crabeater, and the leopard seal. On the Antarctic Peninsula there are also elephant seals and fur seals.
