Fishponds on a mountain farm: an unusual sight at these altitudes. On an Austrian mountain, permaculture farmer Sepp Holzer created more than 70 ponds and wetland areas covering about 3 hectares. Filmmakers Malcolm St.Julian Bown and Heidi Snel have published a DVD with 3 films on Sepp Holzer. Find the DVD at www.ecofilm.de

GOOD: Urban Aquaculture

good.is Professor Martin Schreibman says our oceans have been overfished beyond repair. If we're going to keep eating fish and chips, tuna tartare, and all those omega-3 fatty acids, we may have to rely on aquaculture. Schreibman is working to bring those fish farms into the city. Urban aquaculture? We'll bite.

Vegetarian Fish? A New Solution for Aquaculture

Fish farming already produces half the world's marketable fish. But is it environmentally friendly? Aaron Watson and Steven Rogers at Baltimore's Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology explain why plant-based fish feed and recirculated aquaculture may be the future for farmed fish.

Cooke Aquaculture in Chile - Salmones Cupquelan

Salmones Cupquelan SA is a salmon and trout farming company based in the Cupquelan Fjord in southern Chile. It is owned by Cooke Aquaculutre, a family-owned independent aquaculture company based in Atlantic Canada. The fjord provides a pristine and isolated environment that is surrounded by glaciers and rainforests - a perfect location for top quality production and the implementation of sustainable farming methods. OUR CUPQUELAN SALMON Salmones Cupquelan is the sole operator in the isolated Cupquelan Fjord. This unique environment contributes to enhanced bio-security and excellent fish welfare. The Cupquelan Fjord is 40 km long and the nearest neighbouring farming operation is 75 km away, well outside the fjord. At the head of the fjord, two glacial rivers run down and flow from cliffs into the fjord basin's waters. This fresh water inflow reduces the salinity in the fjord and creates an excellent environment for salmon and trout to grow. The low salinity also inhibits the propagation of sea lice, adding to the quality of the water and fish welfare.

Astec Aquaculture Business & Science Centre

Astec provides a unique and supportive environment for aquaculture related marine science businesses and research. What makes us unique? We pump a constant supply of flow-through, near tropical temperature seawater direct to our private wet labs, which are equipped to support a broad range of commercial and research activities, and scalable outdoor production space. This enables a broad range of aquatic plants and animals to be cultivated here all year round. As the UK's first aquaculture business incubator centre, we have a specific focus on supporting early stage aquaculture businesses, and as such offer the ideal combination of "plug in and go" facilities and bespoke business support. Take a computer generated tour of our purpose-built facility, or for more information log on to www.astecaquaculture.com

Tilapia Aquaculture Dialogue Standards

Tilapia is one of the most popular types of seafood eaten in the United States. Most of it 75 percent comes from an enclosed farm in the ocean or an inland farm, such as a man-made pond. Its called tilapia aquaculture and it is one of the fastest growing food industries in the world.

Low tech Aquaculture - Self reproducing food storage

When people think of Aquaculture they probably don't often think of crawfish, but crawfish are some of the easiest, lowest maintenance species that you can raise. They are perfectly capable of living in very small bodies of water without our help. This is a much more secure form of aquaculture than the versions that involve pumps. If you are dependent on pumps then you are dependent on electricity and electronics which could fail.

Aquaponics

Do it yourself Aquaponics. Mixture of Aquaculture and Hydroponics. This system recycles the dirty water of the fish, by allowing the plants to clean up the nitrates or nitrites the fish produces and returns the water clean for the fish to live in. Grows faster than soil, you use less water, you recycle it, and you can either do a small scale like I did in my Urban City Apt. or make a bigger scale if you have a backyard to play with.

NC Aquaculture

INTRO: North Carolina is certainly well-known for its agriculture industry---both in crops and in livestock. But a livelihood that's been dominated by tobacco and hogs-among other things-is starting to welcome some new names like tilapia and prawns. They're two of several types of seafood being raised and harvested as part of our state's aquaculture industry. Rob Holliday has the story. TAG: Like crops and livestock, aquaculture is also regionally diverse. While many of the fish and shellfish do well in the eastern part of the state, several of them can succeed in the piedmont and mountains...and a few can even be raised indoors.

MINIMAL SPACE GROW LAB & AQUACULTURE PROJECT 1

Our organization sponsored The Minimal Space Grower's Lab & Urban Aquaculture Gardening Project beginning in the spring of 2010 thru the summer. We facilitated children (Ages 6-10) from urban low-income families who had limited opportunities to experience gardening and food cultivation. The project was hosted at the Ototsi Village sustainable food forest community. Students learned to use methodologies based on careful research and observations of natural environments. They engaged in basic hands-on design and cultivation techniques while also learning ways to efficiently grow food in limited spaces. The project was a success and the children have since moved on to designing, building and maintaining more intensive inverted and aquaculture gardens.
