Escobar: US can't launch Arab Spring in Russia

The Russian Foreign Ministry shot back at US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her criticism that Russia's elections were neither free nor fair. Pointing out that the US electoral system is "far from perfect," the foreign ministry continued that only the Russian people "can determine the future of our country -- regardless of anyone's partial judgments and politicized recipes." Clinton, who had previously chastised Russia's State Duma elections, stepped up the rhetoric while speaking at an Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) ministerial meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania Tuesday. Pepe Escobatr, who is "The Asia Times" correspondent in Sao Paolo, says US-Russia reset in relations is dead because of Washington's pressure on Moscow. No Arab Spring for Israel - daughter of Moshe Dayan

Tensions are running high between Israel and Palestine as both sides continue cross-border attacks which broke two months of quiet. Meanwhile, Israeli politician Yael Dayan has said direct peace talks between the two sides are doomed to fail. Despite the ceasefire, the exchanges of fire between Israel and Gaza have continued through the weekend, with both sides blaming each other for igniting the violence. On Saturday, Israeli aircraft hit Palestinian militants from the Islamic Jihad in Gaza, reportedly killing seven people and injuring 15 in two separate attacks. In response, militants fired some 20 rockets into southern Israel, injuring at least three civilians. A Tribute to the Arab Spring

One of the most rewarding recent moments of the ongoing struggle for freedom, justice and dignity was the liberation of Libya by its people. The images from Tripoli, like the earlier ones from Tunisia and Egypt, are a triumphant reminder that the Arab Spring is not just for Syrians -- it's for all oppressed peoples anywhere in the world. In this spirit, we have created a short video tribute to the Arab Spring. Investing in the Arab Spring

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The "Arab Spring" in the Middle East and North Africa has raised hopes and dreams. But can it raise money to invest in a better future? How to respond to the Arab uprisings was a major question for world leaders at the Group of 8 meeting in France in late May. Earlier, the head of the World Bank said international support can speed progress -- "but only if coupled with real reform." President Obama discussed American development plans in his Middle East policy speech on May nineteenth. He said: "The goal must be a model in which protectionism gives way to openness, the reins of commerce pass from the few to the many and the economy generates jobs for the young. America's support for democracy will therefore be based on ensuring financial stability, promoting reform and integrating competitive markets with each other and the global economy. And we are going to start with Tunisia and Egypt." Democracy protests in those two countries forced out their presidents early this year. The World Bank will offer Egypt four and a half billion dollars in loans over the next two years. The money would be part of a plan with the International Monetary Fund to help control Egypt's budget deficit. The goal is to improve the country's credit rating in order to ease the concerns of investors and reduce borrowing costs. About two billion dollars in loans would be linked to progress in government reforms. The ...
