Calatrava, who considers himself to be above all an artist, says an architect is also a philanthropist. In the past cities were designed to last, today they provide an insight into the soul of the lost civilisations that built them. So, if architecture is the most tangible sign of a civilisation how then to preserve the sacred nature of a location?
The Architecture of Ancient Rome adopted the external Greek architecture for their own purposes, which were so different from Greek buildings as to create a new architectural style. The two styles are often considered one body of classical architecture. This approach is considered reproductive, and sometimes it hinders scholars' understanding and ability to judge Roman buildings by Greek standards, particularly when relying solely on external appearances. The Romans absorbed Greek influence, apparent in many aspects closely related to architecture; for example, this can be seen in the introduction and use of the Triclinium in Roman villas as a place and manner of dining. The Romans, similarly, were indebted to their Etruscan neighbors and forefathers who supplied them with a wealth of knowledge essential for future architectural solutions, such as hydraulics and in the construction of arches. Social elements such as wealth and high population densities in cities forced the ancient Romans to discover new (architectural) solutions of their own. The use of vaults and arches together with a sound knowledge of building materials, for example, enabled them to achieve unprecedented successes in the construction of imposing structures for public use. Examples include the aqueducts of Rome, the Baths of Diocletian and the Baths of Caracalla, the basilicas and perhaps most famously of all, the Colosseum. Yesterday night the first installation to be built by flying machines opened its doors to the public. An hour or so after the Opening, after most of the crowd had gone to drink champagne in the building next door, I snuck upstairs and recorded a few short clips of the quadrocopters. The installation, called "Flight Assembled Architecture", was conceived and built by teams led by my colleagues Fabio Gramazio & Matthias Kohler as well as Raffaello D'Andrea at the ETH Zurich. It illustrates a radically new way of thinking about materializing architecture: Use a multitude of mobile flying agents working in parallel and acting together as a scalable production means. As you can see in the video, the quadrocopters are programmed to interact, lift, transport and assemble small modules in order to erect a building. The tower is actually a 1:100 model of a "vertical village" with a height of 600 meters and housing 30'000 inhabitants. This is an overview of my photorealistic rendering technique with 3dsMax and Adobe Photoshop. www.cmistudio.com Welcome to another tutorial brought to you by Creative Media Illustration. My name is Les Chylinski and in this tutorial I am doing an overview of my production process of this rendering. This was an interesting rendering assignment because I had a chance to do my own photography. The site of the condominium project is located across the Mississippi from downtown Minneapolis. To take the photos of downtown I had to clime up to the top of exiting part of the mill that will be torn down to make room for this project. In this slide I marked my location from which I was taking the photos and I also sketched in the shape of the existing mill that would be torn down. The roof of this existing mill was too low for the required vantage point so I had to create an illusion in Photoshop that we were positioned about 50 feet higher. All of my photos were taken on an overcast day and that's another thing that I had to modify in Photoshop. I positioned the sun behind the building on the left -- which makes it this an early morning shot with long shadows. For this rendering the client provided me with the SketchUp model which was a little out of date and more accurate Revit model. I decided to use the SketchUp model to set the camera and use it as a place holder for the final render of the building. This is the 1/12 scale model wood frame house I built using balsa. I built the model to refresh my memory of what I had learnt during a wood framing course I had done. The model was created first by designing the floor plan to my own design, then I drew up the plans for the walls etc. The house is built to Australian Framing standards, only to 1/12 scale.
