France outlaws Armenian Genocide denial

Turkey has vowed to retaliate, after the French Senate approved a bill making it a crime to deny that the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman empire in 1915, was genocide. Ankara has already suspended military, political and economic ties with Paris. Both houses of the French parliament have passed the bill, which still has to be signed off by President Sarkozy in order to become law. The proposal is set to make the denial of genocide and war crimes, recognized by French law, punishable by up to a year in prison. Turkey denies the massacre, that's considered by many to be the 20th century's first genocide. The executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America, Aram Hamparian, says the measure will force Ankara to admit to the atrocities. Armenian Genocide - Armenia, November 2008

The eviction and slaughter of over a million Armenians in Anatolia began in 1915. There's little doubt Turkey was behind this massive ethnic cleansing. Yet the Turkish government denies the historical facts. Almost a century later, any mention of the genocide is still taboo. A law designed to protect 'Turkishness' is used to sue those who challenge the official version. Nobel Prize winning author Orhan Pamuk was sent to prison for speaking out about his country's guilt. More tragically, Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was recently murdered for his efforts to bridge the divide between both people. The father of his alleged killer claims that his son was only led astray "because he loves his country and his nation." Tens of thousands protested against nationalist violence after Dink's murder, but ultra-nationalism is still rife. Turkish MPs consider any hints to the genocide 'insulting' and authorities turn a blind eye to nationalist excesses. The argument over the Armenian genocide stretches beyond Turkey's borders. As the country is a key ally in the Middle East, the US has avoided taking a clear stance on the subject. For the Armenian Foreign Minister, "the sense of tragedy is being exacerbated with every passing day Turkey continues to deny." Although it has caused enough sorrow, this festering hatred keeps claiming lives. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

French-Turkish-Armenian questions

www.euronews.net At least 20 countries officially recognise the acts of the Ottoman Empire from 1915-1923 against the Armenians as genocide. Others, such as Germany Britain, Israel and the United States, continue to debate just how to refer to them. Two months ago, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, visiting Armenia, prepared the way for new legislation in the matter. Sarkozy said: "If a great country like Turkey were to recognise dark pages in its history, and therefore the genocide of the Armenians, France, like Armenia, would see that as a very good step forward."
Armenian couple name their baby "Sarkozy"

www.euronews.net A couple in Armenia have named their new-born baby Sarkozy in honour of France's president. It comes after the French Senate voted to make it illegal to deny the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks was genocide. The baby's father said his chose the name on the spur of the moment: "We were sat in front of the television, discussing the genocide. At that time, Nicolas Sarkozy agreed that the Armenian genocide needs to be recognised. It was at that moment that the idea came to me to name my first born after him," said Karapet Avetisian.

Samsara Trailer Depicts Pantheon of Armenian Gods (Documentary 2012).

Pantheon of Armenian Gods And Godessess The first god in Armenia was one of the language's first sounds, 'AR', which means sun or light. As the source of life, the sun became equated with power and the supreme god. Ararat is mentioned as early as ca. 6000 BC in the Sumerian epoch poem Gilgamesh, as the land of the mountains where the gods live. The word Ararat can be divided into three words: AR-AR-AT. AR-AR being a plural form or all encompassing god; 'AT' being an archaic version of the Armenian word 'hat', which means 'a piece of'. Thus Ararat meant 'a piece of gods, or a piece of creation. Early symbols for gods are closely connected with astral symbols. The first use of the sacred swastika and cross are found in ca. 20000-15000 BC inscriptions in the Geghama Mountain Range. Carvings dating back to ca. 8500 BCE show symbols associated with astronomy, giving them a god like prominence: the sun, moon, and constellations were thought to be deities in themselves, and astral occurrences such as an eclipse or a comet were considered communication from the gods. By the 5th millennium BC, Ancestral Armenians combined sun worship with sophisticated astronomy. They are now credited with assigning the constellations of the zodiac their design and names, and creating one of the first solar calendars based on 365 days in the year. Also around the 5th millennium BC a series of Vishaps (Dragon Stones) began to be erected on mountainsides throughout Armenia, near water sources. At ...

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the year 180 AD. Gaius Julius Sohaemus, also known as Sohaemus of Armenia and Sohaemo (Greek: Γάϊος Ἰούλιος Σόαιμος, Sohaemus is Arabic for little dagger, flourished 2nd century) was an Emesene Aristocrat from Syria who served as a Roman Client King of Armenia. Sohaemus was a prominent person in the Roman Empire in the 2nd century from the Syrian Roman Client Emesene Dynasty. He was an aristocrat of Assyrian, Greek, Armenian, Medes and possibly of Berber, Roman ancestry. The novelist of the 2nd century, his contemporary Iamblichus claims Sohaemus has his fellow-countryman. Iamblichus calls Sohaemus as an Arsacid and Achaemenid, in his lineage and was a descendant of the Median Princess Iotapa, who was once betrothed to the Ptolemaic Prince Alexander Helios. Little is known on Sohaemus' family and early life prior to becoming King of Armenia. Before becoming King, Sohaemus had been a Roman Senator and served as a Consul in Rome at an unknown date. In the year 144, Sohaemus succeeded Aurelius Pacorus as King of Armenia. The circumstances leading to his appointment to the Armenian throne is unknown. Sohaemus was a contemporary to the rule of the Roman Emperors: Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and Commodus of the Nerva--Antonine dynasty. In the first reign, he ruled from the years from 144 until 161. Not much is known of about his first reign. The novelist Iamblichus living in Armenia at the time of his rule describes his reign ...
