Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 - Athens - Countdown to Greece!

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 continues at the birthplace of modern competitive sports, Athens, Greece, on Sunday, May 22 in an event you can see live on Red Bull TV. Just a stone's throw away from Athens' city centre where the Olympic spirit remains omnipresent, Gary Hunt, Artem Silchenko and Slava Polyeshchuk will be among those fighting it out for victory during the third stop of competition at Lake Vouliagmeni. Fittingly, it is also the occasion at which two-time Olympic gold medallist Greg Louganis will judge a World Series competition for the first time, with the American diving legend taking his place among a five-person judging panel. Unfortunately, however, there will be no Orlando Duque, the all-conquering Colombian, who had won the first two competitions, sustained an ankle injury at the end of April and, though he is recovering well from surgery, the nine-time world champion will take no further part this year. Watch it live on Sunday, May 22nd, 14:00 GMT: www.redbull.tv © Red Bull Media House

Cliff Diving World Series - Gary Hunt Takes the Title

British diver Gary Hunt has won the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. The final was held in Hawaii over the weekend. Lets take a look at the action... The Hawian islands, the birthplace of cliff diving. The sport traces its roots back to the tribal chief Kahikili who would dive from Hawaii's cliffs and challenge his warriors to do the same. And it is back to Hawaii for the final of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Divers must impress the judges as they jump from a platform 26 meters above the water. British Diver Gary Hunt came second last year and after competing in 5 locations this year, arrived in Hawaii top of the table. Although Colombian competitor Orlando Duque won the final round, Hunt had enough points from earlier rounds to remain in the lead and clinch this year's title of world cliff diving champion. [Gary Hunt, Cliff Diving Champion (Great Britain)] "For me, I feel really happy. I mean, again, I was on the podium for all the stops, and getting 4 out of 6 wins, I'm over the moon. Overall, there's a few things I need to work on, but yeah, I'm happy." Duque said he was happy with second place and was keen to emphasise Hunt's achievement. [Orlando Duque, 2nd Place (Colombia)] "You know, I feel pretty good, second place is, I think the best I could do. Halfway through the season Gary was doing very good already and he kind of pulled away from all of us." Russian competitor Artem Silchenko said he made a mistake in an earlier round in Sisikon, Switzerland ...

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 - Yalta - The Grand Finale in Ukraine

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 comes to Ukraine for season's grand finale Exactly one hundred years after Russian architect Leonid Sherwood started to build it in 1911, the "Swallow's Nest" stages the culminating competition in the World Series' third year. The ornate castle near Yalta on the Crimean shore in southern Ukraine provides the perfect backdrop for the crowning of this year's champion. Gary Hunt from England will once again take the highest cliff diving honours after 2010. The top six positions, though, are still fiercely fought and only the first six classified athletes will automatically advance to next year. Impressive high diving action until the very last dive is guaranteed, as the Crimean peninsula will definitely and finally decide who of the 13-man-strong field of participants gets officially recognised as a member of the world's best cliff divers. © Red Bull Media House

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2010 - Hawaii: The Origin Of Cliff Diving

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2010 is back in the sport's birthplace 'Mana' and 'pono', power and balance -- these old Hawaiian principles were crucial when lele kawa, diving off cliffs, was born on the islands in the midst of the Pacific back in the 18th century. They are principles that have been upheld and are today prerequisites for the sport of high diving. It was from a rock made of lava that the last independent chief of Maui, King Kahekili, jumped in the late 1700s. The site of Kahekili's Leap has ever since then been regarded as the birthplace of the majestic sport of cliff diving.

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 - Athens - Comparison of Olympic and High Diving

How does Olympic Diving compare to High Diving Listening to their individual stories, the first steps were very similar: No matter how high your ambition and talent takes you in the future, it all starts at the side of the pool. Stopovers on various heights are part of the way up for both, but as soon as it comes to the definition of 'top', opinions start to differ. The appreciation of each other, though, is as high as it can get. Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 - Yucatan - Tunnel Vision

TUNNEL VISION The importance of reference points when diving from 27 metres Ever looked from bright sunshine into a cave? Or walked into one from clear daylight? Darkness. That is all you see. A black hole, nothing else. The human eye takes several minutes to adjust to the change in light. Without any points of reference you would need to a rope to find your way. However, what if you are travelling at 85kph and only have three seconds to make it through this dark tunnel safely? And, if you need to, how would you adjust your movements to secure a save landing? Cliff divers are experts at it and the diving venue at the sacred well on the Yucatán Peninsula serves as an example par excellence. © Red Bull Media House
