Julia Migenes: Diva on the Verge

Available on DVD from www.digitalclassics.co.uk and all major retailers. Live performance of the one woman show by irrepressable soprano Julia Migenes. Here she draws on her experiences in opera to invite us to look afresh at the genre she loves. And with audacious anecdotes she sketches out the life of an opera singer, using her iconoclastic and earthly humour to throw open the gates to the world of opera in all its preposterousness. JULIA MIGENES DIVA ON THE VERGE Drawing on her own experiences as a star of the opera, the irrepressible soprano Julia Migenes invites us to look afresh at the genre she loves, with an irreverent one-woman show which cuts a swathe through operatic preconceptions. For many, the world of opera is stuffy and exclusive: there are the incomprehensible lyrics; the improbable plots; the starving artists; lovelorn teenagers and consumptive leading ladies, played by large, decidedly middle-aged, singers, with very powerful lungs. Aimed at those who would not go to the opera and those who would not go back, Migeness iconoclastic and earthy humour, throws open the gates to the world of opera in all its splendour and preposterousness. Filmed live from Londons Criterion Theatre, Grammy Award winner Migenes punctuates her lively performance with some of the greatest arias in the soprano repertoire as she sketches out the life of the opera singer, with revealing and audacious anecdotes from behind the scenes. Holi Fhag - Merasi 2008

The Merasi are a community of impoverished, marginalized lower caste musicians who live in Rajasthan, a sprawling desert state in northwestern India. They descend from a 37-generation-old musical legacy that is on the verge of extinction due to India's rapid modernization. The Hearts with Hope 2 Tour is sponsored by Folk Arts Rajasthan, a US nonprofit, that is dedicated to empowering the Merasi community through educational initiatives, fair trade projects, and cultural exchange programs, such as this tour. Our objective with the tour is to spread awareness about this vital musical legacy, the precarious reality of the artists who safeguard it and, ultimately, raise hope for a more expansive future.

Allindstrom.com Presents: Indie's Mental Giant: Tech N9ne

Being indie is cool. With new technology, it's so easy for artists to be successful on their independent grind. In fact, fans want to see you grind independently before they sign to that major machine. Major record labels are going as far as to keep their signings quiet in order to give their artist that indie back story. The idea is simple: independent artists get a fan base that grows organically, most major artists don't. If majors are trying to learn how to build a fan base organically, or how to mimic that "indie feel" for an artist, they should be paying attention to hip-hop's greatest indie artist of all time. His name? Tech N9ne. Tech N9ne has been on the indie grind for over a decade. In 1999, he partnered up with Kansas City businessman Travis O'Guinn to create Strange Music. Through the label, Tech has sold over 1 million albums collectively, and toured around the world. He sells out every single venue he performs at, and credits it all the effort he gives on stage for his fans every single night. Tech is serious about his craft, and serious about his fans. It's safe to say that his fans feel the exact same way. Tech is now on the verge of mainstream stardom. With a huge fan base, and a Lil' Wayne co-sign (remember how that formula fared for Drake?), Tech could very well end up as one of hip-hop's biggest artists before it's all said and done. This without and radio spins, or any video on MTV. In part 1 of our interview with Tech, we talk about the early days ...

Jason Harrow (born May 11, 1976 in Scarborough, Ontario), better known by his stage name Kardinal Offishall (pronounced /ˈkɑːrdɪnæl oʊfɪˈʃæl/), is a Canadian hip-hop MC and producer of Jamaican descent. Kardinal is often credited as Canada's "hip-hop ambassador"[1], and along with MC's such as Saukrates and Maestro Fresh Wes, he's arguably the most popular. To date, Kardinal is the only Canadian urban act to appear on BET's Rap City (even freestyling in the booth with Big Tigger), and on MTV's Advance Warning (which introduces the world to artists on the verge of breaking big, like former guest Kanye West). Kardinal has made brief guest appearances in Rihanna's "Pon De Replay" music video, and Sean Paul's "Get Busy" video, which was shot in Woodbridge, Ontario (a Toronto suburb). He has also appeared on mixtapes from Clinton Sparks and DJ Green Lantern. In 2006, Kardinal collaborated with Akon, Cipha Sounds, DJ Whoo Kid, and various members of the Black Jays family, among others. At the 2006 MuchMusic Video Awards, Kardinal walked away with 3 awards for "Everyday (Rudebwoy)", including Best Video, Best Director (RT!) and VideoFACT Award. At the MMVA's, he announced that he had an upcoming collaboration with the Canadian Reggae Band Bedouin Soundclash, now known as the single "Last Standing Soldier" (Remix).

The Nomi Song trailer

The Nomi Song is Andrew Horn's award-winning look at the life of German-born singer Klaus Nomi. One of the most profoundly bizarre characters of the late 70s/early 80s New Wave underground scene, Klaus Nomi was a genuine counter-tenor who sang pop music like opera to enthusiastic club audiences. Through archival performance footage and interviews with his friends and fellow artists, Nomi's influence and unique style are brought to life twenty-two years after his death from AIDS. Part documentary, part music film and part sci-fi, The Nomi Song is a story of love of music and love of performing at a time when it seemed as though everyone was struck by a sense of urgency to make something - anything. A time of no limits. Klaus Nomi was on the verge of international fame as a singer when he tragically became one of the first gay artists to die of AIDS (then referred to as the "gay cancer"). He was as much a genuine talent as he was the engine of his own destruction. He was an alien amongst the outcasts and an obviously tortured soul who, at the same time, radiated optimism when optimism was "officially" out of fashion. The Nomi Song is a story that grows out of a group of people who influenced him; people who felt used, cheated yet, overall, inspired. Featuring Ann Magnuson, Gabriele Lafari, David MacDermot, Page Wood, Tony Frere, Man Parrish, Kristian Hoffman, Ron Johnsen, Kenny Scharf, Anthony Scibelli, Alan Platt with a special appearance by David Bowie.
