Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan is ten years old this year. The city's designation as capital initiated one of the most ambitious urban development projects of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This film -- THIS IS ASTANA - shows captures the unique atmosphere of a capital that rivals all the dynamism of longer-established cities like New York.
Astana (Kazakh: Астана / Astana / أستانا), formerly known as Akmola (Kazakh: Ақмола / Aqmola, until 1998), Tselinograd (Russian: Целиноград, until 1992) and Akmolinsk (Russian: Акмолинск, until 1961), is the capital and second largest city (after Almaty) of Kazakhstan, with an officially estimated population of 708794 as of 1 August 2010. It is located in the north-central portion of Kazakhstan, within Akmola Province, though administrated separately from the province as a federal city area. Town planning Astana can be divided largely into a few different areas. North of the railway line, which crosses Astana in an east-west direction, are industrial and poorer residential areas. Between the railway line and the river Ishim is the city center, where at present intense building activity is occurring. To the west and east are more elevated residential areas with parks and the new area of government administration to the south of the Ishim. Here many large building projects are underway; for example, the construction of a diplomat quarter, and a variety of different government buildings. By 2030, these quarters are to be completed. The original plans for the new Astana were drawn up by the late Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. Astana's current chief planner, Vladimir Laptev, wants to build a Berlin in a Eurasian style. GERMANY WINS THE FIRST ROUND In the end, with eight medals -- one gold, two silver and five bronze -- won by its riders during the three days of the competition, Germany won the first round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup 2011-2012, presented by Samsung. In spite of their three wins, the Australians had to concede 29 points to the Germans in the Team ranking of the event which sees France, as current trophy holder, finish in third place. Yet, the last meeting had begun very well for the "Cyclones", winners of the Madison with Alexander Edmondson and Glenn Oshea -- who had already won the Individual Pursuit the day before -- in front of Switzerland and the Russians of the Lokosphinx team, after a rather eventful race. However, all the spectators present in the velodrome at Astana were eagerly waiting the moment to experience the emotions of the last two Sprint contests which remained to be fought out. Most people's attention was focused on Chris Hoy, who was seeking to take his revenge after his defeat in Keirin. The performance certainly kept its promises, with the Brit beating the German Robert Forstemann in the semi-final and the Russian Denis Dmitriev in the final. For the several times World Champion and Olympic Champion, currently striving for the best possible physical condition following some difficulties which had troubled him during these last few weeks, this victory at Astana represents a very important step forward on the long road that will take him first <b>...</b>
