Gene Screen BC 2011 Participant. Ataxia is a rare, genetic disorder that is often mistaken for drunkenness, or lack of intelligence. This video spotlights Doctor Aaron Sturrock as he explains Ataxia, how it is inherited, and how the symptoms can affect a person.

-Ataxia is a neurological sign and symptom that consists of gross lack of coordination of muscle movements. Ataxia is a non-specific clinical manifestation implying dysfunction of the parts of the nervous system that coordinate movement, such as the cerebellum. Several possible causes exist for these patterns of neurological dysfunction. The term "dystaxia" is rarely used as a synonym. Edson Zerati, MD www.edsonzerati.com.br

margueriteblack.blogspot.com A peek into the life of Marguerite Black, who suffers from Friedreich's Ataxia, an inherited disease that damages your nervous system. The damage affects your spinal cord and the nerves that control muscle movement in your arms and legs. In severe cases, people become incapacitated. Life expectancy is approximately 30 - 40 years. There is no cure, but we always have hope...

WARNING: Have a box of tissue and a trashcan near bye. This is a video of Brycen on Tuesday 11/17. He started feeling like this suddenly on Sat. 11/14 @ 6:30 am when he woke up mommy. She found him lying on the floor crying and unable to stand with her help. After X-Rays, CT, MRI, Blood Work the doctors think it is most likely a cause of the H1N1 nasal vaccine that he received on11/3. This is the cause of acute ataxia on the cerebelum.

I got ataxic dysarthria with a cerebellar AVM/ stroke last year and am relearning to talk via toastmasters and going to the UW Speech clinic, where I do speech therapy and the Lee Silverman Voice Training method of relearning to talk. This speech was a small triumph as I barely used my notes. The video is hard to understand because the mike on the camera was screwy, and hey, I still talk to fast. When I don't read something, I talk faster...Do you have dysarthria? Please write me and tell me how you are doing. I am alone here and feeling my way toward progress alone, every day. I would like to share your growth and experiences with dysarthria...I hear that dysarthria without aphasia is rare, and ataxic is even rarer...write me, please -

Kyle Bryant talks about living with Friedreich's Ataxia and efforts nationwide and at the University of South Florida to raise funds for the little-known yet life-altering neurological disease.

Ethan has cerebellar hypoplasia. He was diagnosed at age of 18 months(yr 2000), the first part of the video was taken when he was 2 years old by his neurolgist. The big question is do you think that he will ever walk on his own? The 2nd part was taken when he was 9. He has come such a long way, we are so proud of him. We know that he will only get better, he is so determined to do what he sets out to do.

www.Alfred.TV READ ME FIRST Join me with Dr. Howard Lederman from Johns Hopkins Medicine as he provides us with an overview of the genetic disorder, Ataxia Telangiectasia, better known as "AT". Dr. Lederman's titles at Johns Hopkins Medicine include: • Professor of Pediatrics • Director, Immunodeficiency Clinic • Director, Ataxia-Telangiectasia Clinical Center • Director, Pediatric Immunology Laboratory AT can be referred to as a "gateway gene", with its mutation, known as "ATM", opening the doors to many other diseases, including: • Diabetes • Alzheimer's • Cerebral Palsy • Cystic Fibrosis • Breast Cancer • Immune Deficiency Dr. Lederman's leading-edge research on AT, with his team at Johns Hopkins Medicine, may also lead to uncovering cures for these other diseases. There are approximately 500 individuals afflicted with AT in the United States. It is a rare, genetic disorder. Also joining us in this video is Jared Digby, with his mother, Pamela, who is afflicted with AT. Pamela and her husband both were carries of the mutated AT gene, and Jared, unfortunately, got a 'double dose" at the genetic level, and suffers with the disorder. Jared's sister is ok. Jared is an avid MacPro user, and he with his family are participating in a Disney Marathon this Labor Day weekend, 2009, to continue fundraising efforts for continued AT research. This short informational movie is a project of the Rotary Club of Brighton North, Victoria, Australia. DVD liner notes: Friedreich ataxia is the commonest genetic cause of unsteadiness in the community. Individuals affected by this genetic condition begin to become unsteady in childhood or adolescence. The unsteadiness progresses inexorably and results in the individual becoming wheelchair-bound on average ten years after the onset of symptoms, and unfortunately lifespan is significantly reduced. The movie also highlights the Friedreich ataxia clinic at the Monash Medical Centre and details the clinical and laboratory-based research undertaken in the Bruce Lefroy Centre for Genetic Health Research at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute situated in the Royal Childrens Hospital in Parkville, Victoria, Australia.

This Ataxic Dysarthria Toastmaster continues to get better!! :-). I have done 18 5-7 minute Toastmaster speeches and this month, taught a six-session 12 hour job search workshop (like I did pre-stroke)! So there! People now say I sound like I have a "swedish" or German Accent (because I over-enunciate), rather than sounding like a "drunk" with slurred words, like a year ago. That's a promotion - better a foreigner than a drunk! And I am understood pretty much everywhere - even on the phone and in noisy places! The attached speech was totally spoken without notes, totally off the cuff. I still talk too fast as I have to think WHAT I am going to say, then focus on HOW I am going to say it. Frankly, I get so nervous that I only think WHAT I am going to say and the HOW goes out the window. Need to get better at that, as I talk too fast when unfocused. The cerebellar stroke that caused the ataxic dysarthria (and ataxia in general) knocked out my ability to pace my words and also, the ability of my brain to coordinate the muscles in my mouth and breathing apparatus to speak clearly. It has been two years. It is practice, but god, I love to talk!

Optic ataxia concerns impairments in using visual information to guide motor movements. In the clip we see a patient who can recognize visual objects but with at least one of her hands she has a difficult time reaching out to grasp the objecta problem tied to impaired representation in the "how" visual pathway.

One of the best experimental rock bands, with their greatest song.

I have ataxic dysarthria from a stroke in 3/2/08 and had Brain surgery to remove the culprit AVM in 2/26/09. The AVM Cerebellar stroke left me with speech, balance and walking disorders that I have worked hard, through therapy, to over come. I am working with UW PT and the UW speech and hearing clinic. Recovery is a full time job, but if you view other videos of me on UTube, you will see it is paying off. I use Toastmasters to keep me motivated about speaking better. I used to talk for a living so speaking well again is VERY important. The purpose of this speech was to deliver a 8-10 sales presentation that used COMPLEX mulit-sylabic words - like Long-term dis-a-bil-i-ty in-sur-ance. 10 syllables!! Whew! Getting there. (We use these Utube videos to help me practice my speech at the UW and also to track my progress with my threapist/insurance providers etc. UTube rocks! :-)
