Athens, Greece: Ancient Acropolis and Agora

Crowned by the mighty Parthenon temple, the Acropolis rises above modern Athens; a lasting testament to Greece's glorious golden age. The Acropolis was the center of ritual and ceremony, and the religious heart of the city. The marketplace at its base is Agora, and was the hub of commercial, political and social life. TRIP TO ATHENS - GREECE

Athens (/ˈæθɨnz/;[1] Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athína, IPA: [aˈθina], Katharevousa: Ἀθῆναι, Athine, Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athēnai), is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica periphery and is one of the world's oldest cities, as its recorded history spans around 3400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum,[2][3] it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy,[4][5] largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent.[6] Today a cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece and it is rated as an Alpha world city.[7] In 2008, Athens was ranked the world's 32nd richest city by purchasing power[8] and the 25th most expensive[9] in a UBS study. The Greek capital has a population of 655780[10] (796442 back in 2004)[11] within its administrative limits[12] and a land area of 39 km2 (15 sq mi).[13] The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) extends beyond the administrative municipal city limits, with a population of 3074160 (in 2011),[14] over an area of 412 km2 (159 sq mi).[13] According to Eurostat, the Athens Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) is the 7th most populous LUZ in the European Union (the 4th most populous ...

Goodbye Greece? 'Eurocrats want Athens out to save face'

Greece starts another day without government after wrangling politicians continue to fail to agree a coalition after last Sunday's elections. The leader of the second-largest party has refused to join any administration which pledges to stick to the country's bailout agreement with the EU and IMF.If a last-ditch attempt to form a national unity government fails, new elections will follow. Greeks are deeply divided over harsh budget cuts which came as the price of international cash injections. The EU has already warned that money will continue to flow ONLY if Athens sticks to agreed austerity measures. The German Finance Minister has said the Eurozone will deal with a Greek exit from the single currency - should it happen. Greek Battlefield: Video of Athens clashes with police

Greek anger over new austerity measures and layoffs erupted into violence outside parliament on Wednesday, as demonstrators hurled chunks of marble and gasoline bombs and riot police responded with tear gas and stun grenades that echoed across Athens' main square. Police said at least 14 officers were hospitalised with injuries, and at least three journalists covering the demonstrations sustained minor injuries. The violence spread across the city centre, as at least 100-thousand people marched through the Greek capital on the first day of a two-day general strike that unions described as the largest protest in years. Most of the protesters marched peacefully, but crowds outside of parliament clashed with police who tried to disperse them with repeated rounds of tear gas. Hundreds of rioting youths smashed and looted stores in central Athens on Wednesday after the mass anti-government rally against the new painful austerity measures. Police and rioters held running battles through the narrow streets of central Athens, as thick black smoke from burning rubbish and bus-stops set ablaze filled the city's skyline and obscured its ancient monuments. A gasoline bomb set fire to a presidential guard sentry post at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside Parliament, while running clashes broke out in several side streets near the legislature and the capital's main Syntagma Square. Nearby, groups of hooded, masked protesters tore chunks of marble off building fronts with hammers ...

GREECE RIOTS - Athens Burns as people fights aginst Austerity plans. The Greek parliament has approved new harsh austerity legislature needed to secure a 130-billion-euro bailout from the EU and the IMF in efforts to avoid devastating default. This comes amid violent riots against the vote in Athens. The lawmakers voted early Monday in favor of the bill that will cut 15000 public-sector jobs and lower the minimum wage by 20 per cent. Out of 278 MP's, 199 voted in favor of the bill, with many of those who rebelled being expelled from their parties. Before the voting began, Greek PM Lucas Papademos stressed the crucial importance of the measures warning of "uncontrollable economic chaos" if they were not passed. "The social cost of this program is limited in comparison with the economic and social catastrophe that would follow if we did not adopt it," he said in a televised address. More than 100000 protesters marched to the building of parliament at Syntagma Square on Sunday to express their anger at the new harsh austerity bill. Demonstrators have clashed with police, setting buildings ablaze on their way in central Athens. Dozens of police officers were injured and at least 55 protesters were sent to hospital. Police said 150 shops were looted in the capital and 34 buildings were set on fire by enraged mobs. A three-story corner building believed to be a home appliances store was severely damaged by fire. Athens: Ancient Greek Supercity

This documentary examines the city state of Athens during the period of Pericles, their democratically elected leader for 30 consecutive years and never ostracized. Pericles had a vision of what Athens should look like and this episode tries to show you what it was in historical context. Athens at that time was also a direct democracy and it was during this period that it achieved its height and its glory, but it was very short-lived. Due to disease and military conflict, Athens eventually had to surrender to Sparta. The documentary focuses on the architectural, cultural and military history of the period. It begins by looking at the Acropolis but more specifically at the Parthenon, one of the most perfect buildings ever constructed and the most duplicated building and architectural style for hundreds of years worldwide. For people who have never seen the Parthenon in person or for those who have, this episode provides you a closer look at the interior of the building, how it was constructed and it's long history, a few of the things that you may have missed on your visit to the Parthenon! They end the segment by showing you how it most likely would have looked like in the past with its statues and its elaborately painted exterior. It also examines in-depth the Agora just below the Acropolis -- the heart of ancient Athens. It looks at its uses, some of the important buildings that were located there and it provides you with a graphical reconstruction of the area and its ...
