In Athens angry protestors have been clashing with police, who have fired tear gas at them. Thousands have been gathering outside the Greek Parliament, furious at the level of spending cuts. A 24-hour public sector strike brought the country to a halt. Greek airports were closed, and hospitals are relying on emergency staff.

Protest Dogs

"Kanellos" the Greek Protest Dog A dog that has been seen at nearly every demonstration in Athens over the last two years has turned up again during the recent protests against new austerity measures. Greek photographers capturing riot footage started to notice the pooch when he kept appearing in their negatives. Their photos show the mutt appearing at nearly every clash between angry locals and the police in Athens. Not surprisingly, he surfaced again during the recent protests during a nationwide strike. The pup is seen in a variety of dangerous places: bravely lying down before lines of demonstrators, running at police, barking at riot cops prepared to shoot, and even dodging tear gas: dailycaller.com music: Get Down by Gilbert O'Sullivan

Riot dog joins asylum Protest in Athens, Greece on April 9, 2009

About 1000 people showed up at Athens University to protest against proposed changes to a law that bans police from entering university campuses. After the December riots and continued social unrest, the Greek government has been trying to crack down on unruly protesters. By repealing the ban on police officers entering university campuses, police will be able to do their job. The government says a small group of extremists have abused the asylum law and have used the university as a base from which to launch attacks against police. The asylum laws, which bars police from entering campuses without permission, have been in place since the fall of the military junta in 1974. Talk of lifting asylum strikes a nerve with protestors who remember the massacre of students at Athens Polytechnic University in 1974 which led to the toppling of the military dictatorship. Instead of clamping down on violence, activists believe repealing asylum is a way to stifle political dissent which is often prevalent on university campuses. The peaceful but loud protest started at Athens University and proceed to the Greek Parliament.

Riot dog stands his ground as Greek firefighters protest in Central Athens-March 26, 2009

Thousands of firefighters from across Greece came to Athens on Thursday, March 26, 2009 to vent their anger at the government of Kostas Karamanlis. Many of the firefighters are part-time workers and they say they were promised year-round employment by the Greek government. That promise was withdrawn due to financial constraints which prompted the protesters to converge on Athens. Earlier in the day, firefighters gathered at the Labour Ministry and were dispersed by riot police who fired tear gas into the crowd. They regrouped at 5 pm at Syntagma Square near the Greek Parliament, many of them wearing their full uniforms. Some members tried to gain entrance to the Economic Ministry office which is close by on Ermou Street, a popular shopping and tourist destination. Scuffles with police broke out and hundreds of firefighters rushed over to confront police. After an exchange of tear gas, pepper spray, bottles and other solid objects things settled down. The firefighters hunkered down for a few hours facing off against lines of riot police. As the evening went on the protest winded down and many were ready to go home. One firefighter was resigned to the fact that the protest didn't change the government's position. "We haven't heard anything today," he said.

Greek dairy farmers handed out thousands of bottles of free milk in downtown Athens on Monday, April 6, 2009. About 100 farmers stood by Syntagma Square and handed out bottles to surprised motorists and pedestrians. The farmers argue that they are paid about 0.30 cents per litre of milk while the supermarket charges 2 euros. They blame the cartel system for shortchanging farmers and overcharching consumers. Greek milk prices are among the highest in the European Union.

Protest in Athens Greece 5th May 2010 Bella Ciao

BBC News: At least three people have been killed in the Greek capital as protesters set fire to a bank during a general strike over planned austerity measures. The bodies were found inside the Marfin Bank in Athens. The Greek prime minister said it was a "murderous act". The protest became violent, with petrol bombs thrown at police, who responded with pepper spray and tear gas. Protesters are angered by spending cuts and tax rises planned in return for a 110bn euro (£95bn) bail-out for Greece. A police spokesman said the three victims - two women and a man - were among 20 people working in the Marfin bank branch on Stadiou Avenue in central Athens when the petrol bomb was thrown. Most of the employees managed to escape the fumes as the flames took hold. But three found their way blocked as they tried to escape to the roof and they suffocated. "We took 15 minutes to get to the site because it was very difficult to get there," said fire brigade spokesman Panayiotis Falaras. He said another five people had been rescued from the building's balcony. Parliament is to vote on the measures by the end of the week. They include wage freezes, pension cuts and tax rises. They aim to achieve fresh budget cuts of 30bn euros over three years, with the goal of cutting Greece's public deficit to less than 3% of GDP by 2014. It currently stands at 13.6%. As the demonstration gained momentum, a group of protesters rushed up a flight of steps at the parliament building in Syntagma Square ...

Kanellos A song for Kanellos, the riot dog Τραγούδι για σ. Κανέλο

kanelos.blogspot.com A song for comrade Kanelos, the riot dog Song , lyrics S. Drogosis The legendary Kanellos passed away about 2 years ago. His name means Cinnamon. He lived a long and free life. He must have been about 17 when he died. He was always there to stand next to the students, the protesters and the people hanging around the central area of Athens, especially at Exarcheia. In his last 12 years he moved into the Polytechneio premises, the Technical University of Athens which is in the Exarcheia area. He became a frequenter, more frequent than many students and started to hang around the corridors, the classes and students councils becoming more of a friend than a mascot. When the Dean of the Architecture department called the dog catcher the people rised. A petition and even a demostration was held, in demand of Kanellos release. Finally they let him go but he was already worned out by arthritis and old age and had trouble walking. The students gathered money and bought him a wheelchair for dogs. One student took him in so he could take care of him in his last days. Kanellos finally passed away on the 2nd of july 2008 and returned again into Polytechneio where he was buried accompanied by many of his friends. Rebel Dog is just one of the new generation of political strays. You can find strays attending demostrations in many cities of Greece, such as Thessaloniki. RIOT DOG

Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God. A patriot's best friend. One committed protester was at the front line when Greek police fired teargas at protesters outside parliament. The dog, thought to be a stray called Loukanikos, or Sausage, has been in the centre of the action since at least 2008. Here are some of his most memorable moments, gathered by (BBC) Newsnight. (thank you) WIKI Riot Dog is a term used to describe either of the three (Kanellos, Louk aka Thodoris, and Loukanikos) literal mascot dogs of the protesters of Athens, Greece. For several years a golden/cinnamon colored dog sporting a blue collar has been seen at nearly every riot/protest whether it be peaceful or destructive. Loukanikos (from Greek "λουκάνικο" which means sausage) is a dog that has been present at nearly every protest in Greece in the past few years. The stray has become the symbol of the Greek protests against the IMF and the EU backed austerity measures that are taking place in 2011. Many of the protesters say that Riot dog (Kanellos, Louk, or Loukanikos) has been taking part in protests for years. His rise to fame occurred mostly after BBC's Newsnight created a video montage of the dog in action during the protests, including barking at police in riot gear and running with other protesters away from tear gas. middle song is Eerie Cove by Kerry Livgren last song is The Spider by Kansas

Protest in Athens Greece 2011-02-23 General strike - Which side are you on?

This is my view of the protest march downtown Athens during the general strike of February 23rd. It is a sequence of pictures and small videos in the exact order they were recorded in my camera from 12:00 to 14:30pm, so you figure out what happened. I read the BBC news reporting 30.000 people protesting. That's a laugh! Most probably somewhere between 100.000 and 200.000 thousand... Workers, civil servants, retired, unemployed, teachers, professors, students, everybody was there, and most of the rest wish they were. The march was interrupted many times by provoked clash between the usual hot blooded company and the police, who grabbed the opportunity to make excessive use of tear gas, just to make sure the Syntagma (Constitution) square in front of the Parliament would remain empty for the cameras. However, there were so many people coming into the square that it kept filling up again and again. The Union of journalists, sold out to the government, went on strike just the same day of the general strike in Greece, so you 'll see no news reports on this one, as usual. Greece is undergoing "low format" these days, under the iron fist of the EU and the IMF, with the aid of their employees, the socialist (!) government. They are rapidly creating a society in which not only poverty prevails, but also increasingly uneducated and hopeless people are being transformed into cattle. We have to start building our society and country all over again from zero, and we will, no matter ...

Dozens of masked youths have been clashing with police at a union protest in Athens during a general strike against the cash-strapped government's planned pension and labor reforms. Riot police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse troublemakers who threw chunks of marble smashed off a metro station entrance and set rubbish bins on fire. Bus and ferry services have been disrupted, leaving some tourists stranded, in protests against planned pension and labour reforms.
