The plan's met heavy public resistance with two days of rioting that's left more than 300 people injured. Greece is picking up the pieces from the latest bout of civil unrest, when thousands of angry protestors flooded the streets. That's after Parliament gave the green light to tough new cuts, in order to secure a further financial lifeline from the EU. European officials welcomed the move. But Greeks could not have been less happy with the pending austerity, as they gathered in the centre of Athens on the second day of a general strike. Protestors threw stones at police, smashed windows and set fire to property. Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Clashes continued overnight. Dozens of police and protestors were injured, while many demonstrators were detained.

In Athens angry protestors have been clashing with police, who have fired tear gas at them. Thousands have been gathering outside the Greek Parliament, furious at the level of spending cuts. A 24-hour public sector strike brought the country to a halt. Greek airports were closed, and hospitals are relying on emergency staff.

Riot police fired tear gas at youths hurling rocks near the Greek finance ministry in Athens on Tuesday, as anger bubbled over on the first day of a general strike, and parliament debated new cost-cutting measures. Hooded youths ripped up paving stones and set rubbish bins on fire in central Athens as police gave chase and fired tear gas and stun grenades. Peaceful protesters nearby braved thick clouds of tear gas to stage an outdoor street party, banging pots and pans in time to music on loudspeakers. Some of them made human chains to protect the peaceful crowd from the rioters and the riot police battles, pushing back the police lines out of Syntagma Square, outside of the Greek parliament. Staff at upscale hotels handed out surgical masks to tourists and helped them with rolling luggage past the rioting, over ground strewn with smashed-up marble and cement paving stones. Youths torched a satellite truck parked near parliament. The fire caused a freezer at a neighbouring kiosk to explode, and hooded youths ducked behind the burning truck to help themselves to ice-cream cones.
