Toy Story 3 - Audio Production for Visual Media Project

This was a semester-long project that Henry Moyerman and myself worked on for our Music Production for Visual Media class at Berklee College of Music. In this project, we were to choose a 6 to 7 minute long clip from a movie in which all audio had been removed. It was our assignment to produce and record all audio, which includes: ADR, Foley, Sound FX, Sound Design, Backgrounds and the Music score. For this project, I was in charge and worked on all of the following: - Foley as the foley artist and editor - Sound Effects (also know as hard effects) - ADR (automated dialogue replacement) as the talent scout, producer and editor - Voice of Rex, Garbage man that picks up Lotso, Frog on the Garbage truck Henry Moyerman was in charge and worked on all of the following: - Backgrounds - Sound Design - Recording Engineer - Voice of the other garbage man and laughing critters on the garbage truck Both Henry and I collaboratively mixed the session as a 5.1 mix and a stereo fold-down mix. Originally we were to have a Film Scoring student from Berklee compose music for the clip, however due to complications, we did not receive a score and had to use the original music from the movie. We would like to thank everyone involved for your time, talent and help. Without you this wouldn't have been possible.

Using Moog Animoog w/ Ableton Live - iPad / iOS Sound Design Tutorial Pt 3

More info - bit.ly In the third and final installment of our video tutorial series on Moog's Animoog iPad app, Dubspot Instructor Matt Cellitti offers sound design and production tips and tricks and shows you how to use Animoog in a Digital Audio Workstation. The final installment of the Animoog tutorials will hopefully give you a few more tricks on how to create some really cool sounds in this great app. Once you have created an interesting sound with a unique path, I will show you how to "stretch" the orbit across your path to create thick sounds, triggering multiple timbres at once for radically transforming sounds. Moving the path around the X/Y axis will allow you to essentially create several different presets inside of one saved sound. I might start with a slow pad if I begin in the top left corner, yet morph to a sharp lead sound by pulling the path down to the bottom of the Y axis. Lastly, it is important to realize that the signal coming out of the iPad/iPhone headphone jack comes in at a lower volume level than we would like. Simply use some effects inside of a DAW or other host program to boost the signal and create more interesting effect chains for Animoog. Set up an effect chain just once and save it for instant recall when you need it again. Works great in both Live and Maschine. - Matt Cellitti

Now, flashing back to the time when Drum Rack came out with Live 7, everyone (myself included) was like, "Yo, forget Impulse! Drum Rack is the stuff!" Ableton Live Tips #7: Vocal Effect Techniques (Radiohead, Nosaj Thing)

Read more: bit.ly In this week's Ableton Live tutorial, Professor Nalepa demonstrates three (3) effect techniques for spicing up your vocals. Inspired by the field trip his Advanced Tech class took this week to Low End Theory to catch a secret DJ set by Thom Yorke, he uses the lead vocal of Radiohead 'Reckoner' to demonstrate the first technique: reversing it, routing it out through reverb, resampling the reverb, reversing the resampled reverb and laying that back underneath the original forward vocal to get a haunting, ghostly premonition-style effect used in a lot of popular dance tracks. He also deconstructs tracks from his friend Nosaj Thing and former students It's Not Over Quebec, showing how they utilized sidechain compression and sidechain gating to achieve impressive results. Nosaj Thing released his debut album Drift and the follow up Drift Remixes on Alpha Pup Records. He is currently putting the finishing toucheson his second album and will be playing an audiovisual set at Coachella on Friday (April 15th) this year. Mixing & Mastering Tutorial Pt 2: Mid-Side EQ Technique w/ Izotope

More info: bit.ly Dubspot Instructor and Mixing & Mastering engineer Daniel Wyatt has a depth of experience, knowledge, perspective, and talent that is unique and unmatched by many mixing and mastering engineers working today. He's mixed and mastered music for artists ranging from Nora Jones and Mos Def to The Roots and Curtis Mayfield. In this follow-up to his How To Use A Limiter using Ozone 4 from Izotope tutorial video, Wyatt shares an invaluable tip for mastering: The Mid-Side EQ Technique, also known as The Sum & Difference Technique, which is an amazing technique you can use to adjust the stereo width of tracks and make them wider. Once again, Wyatt is using the Ozone 4 mastering plug-in, but this is a universal mastering technique you can apply using any host application. Daniel Wyatt shows you how to navigate the Parametric EQ section of Ozone, switching between the Side EQ (used for wide-panned stereo information such as synths, pads, percussions, reverb etc. ) and the Mid EQ (used for kick, snare, bass, lead vocals, instruments, etc.) At the end of this tutorial you should have a good grasp of how to utilize The Mid-Side EQ technique, segment frequencies and make the Mid and Side EQs compliment each other - keep the Mids focused with an extra boost for the subs and the Sides gently rolling off lows.
