The Crimes of Pinochet - Chile

November 1998 He claimed he was Chile's saviour but devised one of the worst concentration camp regimes since Hitler's 'Grand Plan.' As Chile comes to terms with General Pinochet's death, we offer you the definitive film on his crimes. Under Pinochet's regime, over a quarter of a million people were detained in prisons like the Chacabuco desert camp. These are the only images to have emerged from his camps and reveal the true horror of his regime. "They must stay here until they realise they are on the wrong path," states the guard at Chacabuco Concentration camp. Nearby prisoners suspected of being Communists are forced to march and sing military songs. One of the victims filmed at the camp was Patricia Letelier. Now, she lives in exile in Scotland and recalls what happened to her at Chacabuco. "I heard shouting and screaming and knew what was waiting for me. Shortly afterwards my own torture began." Powerful images show men kneeling with their hands in the air, being kicked and beaten with the butts of soldiers' guns. Others show men being marched into the stadium stripped naked with blankets over their heads.

Entrevista Augusto Pinochet CNN

The Overthrow of Democratic Chile Part 1 (Salvador Allende)

The 1973 Chilean coup d'état was a watershed event in the history of Chile and the Cold War. On 11 September 1973, the democratically elected President Salvador Allende was overthrown in a coup d'état organised by the Chilean military. A military junta took control of the government, composed of the heads of the Air Force, Navy, Carabineros (police force) and the Army led by General Augusto Pinochet.[1] Pinochet later assumed power and ended Allende's democratically elected Popular Unity government.[2][3] During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his last speech where he vowed to stay in the presidential palace.[4] Direct witness accounts of his death agree that he committed suicide in the presidential palace.[5][6] After the coup Pinochet established a military dictatorship that ruled Chile until 1990 and that was marked by severe human rights violations. A weak insurgence movement against the Pinochet government was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government.

The Other 9/11 - Chile - Coup d'état - September 11, 1973

On September 11, 1973 a military coup was started by General Augusto Pinochet that ousted the democratically elected President Salvador Allende of Chile. Allende's was the first democratically elected Marxist government in the world. This documentary produced by BBC Four is a chronicle of the event from witnesses and archive footage. A chilling and moving account of the day by perpetrators, as well as those at receiving end, who survived to tell this story of a defining moment in Chile's history. It changed Chile forever. It is the only full length (almost 1 hour) documentary in English on it. Also, it is the only documentary that takes into account both sides of the story.

Milton Friedman and Chile - The Power of Choice

In this excerpt from Free To Choose Network's "The Power of Choice (2006)", we set the record straight on Milton Friedman's dealings with Chile -- including training the Chicago Boys and his meeting with Augusto Pinochet. Was the tremendous prosperity unleashed after the Chicago Boys reforms worth the free-market therapy Friedman suggested? You be the judge. But when doing so, just remember the policies leading up to liberalization (land seizures, industry nationalizations and price controls).

As the votes are in, the No-voters cheerfully celebrate the end of the Pinochet regime and the regained freedom on the streets. However, this film emphasizes that the people will have to continue to face up to the dangers of the regime.

Guy Philippe Is Making A Comeback

The feared Haitian army, disbanded by Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is making a comeback. We take an in-depth look at the paramilitary leader who now claims to be in control of the Haitian police and military: Guy Philippe, a former Haitian police chief who was trained by US Special Forces in Ecuador in the early 1990 For many Haitians, it is like a real life nightmare is once again becoming a reality. The feared Haitian army, disbanded by Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is making a comeback. And what is particularly disturbing to veteran Haiti observers and human rights organizations is the man who now claims to be in control of the Haitian police and military. He says the man he most admires is former Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet. He praises the former dictator as the man who "made Chile what it is.'" Next to Pinochet, his second greatest hero is Ronald Reagan.

Operation Condor - A Holocaust

The South American Holocaust - Operación Cóndor was a campaign of political repressions involving assassination and intelligence operations officially implemented in 1975 by the right-wing dictatorships of the Southern Cone of South America. The program aimed to eradicate left-wing and socialist influence and ideas and to control active or potential opposition movements against the usually conservative governments. Due to its clandestine nature, the precise number of deaths directly attributable to Operation Condor will likely never be known, but it is reported to have caused over sixty thousand victims[1], possibly even more.[2][3][4] Condor's key members were the right-wing military dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil, with Ecuador and Peru joining later in more peripheral roles.[5] These nations were ruled by dictators such as Jorge Rafael Videla, Augusto Pinochet, Ernesto Geisel, Hugo Banzer, and Alfredo Stroessner. The United States provided some communications services for the operation and it has been suggested that the country was more deeply involved.

Chile, Obstinate Memory

Hearing only the official version, a generation of young Chileans has grown up with little knowledge of the historical facts surrounding the events of September 11, 1973. On that day Salvador Allende's democratically elected government was overthrown in a bloody coup by General Augusto Pinochet's army. Patricio Guzmán's landmark film The Battle of Chile (1976) documented the "Popular Unity" period of Allende's government, the tumultuous events leading up to the coup, and Allende's death. But the memory of those times and events, captured so powerfully in The Battle of Chile, was largely barred from the collective consciousness of the Chilean people. Now, Guzmán has returned to show The Battle of Chile in his homeland for the first time, and to explore the terrain of the confiscated (but maybe reawakening) memories of the Chilean people. CHILE, OBSTINATE MEMORY visits with Chileans who experienced the coup first-hand (some of whom are seen in The Battle of Chile from 25 years ago). Survivors reminisce as they watch that film, recognizing lost comrades and recalling their courage, gaiety and love of life. Those who were not killed during the coup itself were crowded into the National Stadium in Santiago, where many were tortured, disappeared, and never seen again. Survivors talk about the terror that characterized the Pinochet regime until the dictator was finally obliged to relinquish power. The film comes in the set of THE BATTLE OF CHILE homevideo.icarusfilms.com

September 11th, 1973

Footage from the 2004 Chilean movie "Machuca" On september 11th, 1973, A US government (and corporation) backed military coup in Chile ousted democratically elected President Salvador Allende and ended South America's oldest constitutional democracy. Allende was considered the worlds first democratically elected marxist leader and embarked on far reaching social and economic reforms in chile. This led to hostilities with Chiles wealthy elite as well as the united states. After the coup, the military maintained control of Chile under the leadership of General Augusto Pinochet, one of history's most infamous dictators. During his authoritarian right-wing rule, thousands died and countless more imprisoned for both their political beliefs, and their economic class. Chile remained in this dark shadow until a new government was formed in 1990. declassified US documents have revealed that the Chilean military was both supported and funded by the US government in the coup. (en.wikipedia.org The American Company ITT has also been found to have assisted in the coupe financially to protect their economic interests. I believe this is one of the more important (and overlooked) moments in both US and world history. I hope you all learn something from this video. And I hope that you realize that regardless of your political leanings, what happened in Chile in 1973 was wrong, and nothing like that should ever happen again.
