The Meaning of "Austerity"

TRANSCRIPT AND SOURCES: ur1.ca ..."Austerity" is one of those Orwellian terms that has been injected into our political discourse precisely because it is a nice-sounding word for a very painful reality. "Austerity" implies discipline, self-restraint, even nobility. "Austerity" is prudent. "Austerity" is modest. "Austerity" is a virtue. It is an end in itself. If the IMF or the European Central Bank come to the people of a collapsing European nation and tell them to sacrifice their pensions and their savings and their very standard of living all for a debt that their government has fraudulently racked up in their name, no one would go for it, and rightly so. But tell those same people that they need to implement "austerity measures" in order to "get back on their feet" economically, and many will be willing to live in the harshest of conditions, content to put up with the dismantling of their nation itself in the vain hope that by giving more power to the international financial institutions they can somehow avoid economic collapse...

Italy defends tough austerity measures

A day after announcing fresh austerity measures, the Italian government has been forced to defend the move against widespread criticism. A hold-up is how some sections of the Italian press have described the tough mix of tax increases and spending cuts to stem the country's swollen debt. But Italy's Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti believes the steps would not be needed if Europe had Eurobonds. "It is essential to have a greater degree of integration and consolidation of public finances in Europe," he told reporters. ... www.euronews.net

Austerity Measures + Paying for the Pope's Vacation = Angry Protesters in Spain

For those who are still waking up: organized religion is a scam. Also, the powers that be were well aware of the fact people would protest this visit. It's not the visit so much, but the situation they (and everyone else fairly soon for that matter) have been forced into over a lot of 1's and 0's in a bank account. Money is also a giant con game. Interesting article to ponder: Does the Pope Wear Prada? Marketers Pray for Day Pontiff Is Seen Using Their Brand; Even Better Than a Movie Star - APRIL 25, 2006 online.wsj.com Anti-pope protesters take to Madrid's streets Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Madrid to protest against a costly visit by Pope Benedict the 16th when the country is saddled with huge debts. The pontiff arrived in Spain on Thursday to attend a major open-air mass to be held in the capital on Sunday. On Wednesday on the eve of his arrival, several thousand people, angry over hefty security costs for the papal visit, held a rally at a central Madrid square. At least 2 people were injured in a clash between the protesters and police. Anti-pope protests are rarely seen in Spain, where a large part of the population is Catholic. The papal visit comes when the country's economy has worsened following the government's austerity measures, including tax hikes and pay cuts for civil servants, aimed at reducing its huge fiscal deficits. Spain's jobless rate remains above 20 percent, the highest level among European nations. Friday, August 19, 2011 02 ...

Civil servants protest over austerity measures in Lisbon CCTV News

Tens of thousands of Portuguese civil servants took to the streets of Lisbon on Saturday, in protest against the government's plans for harsh austerity measures. The protest came a day after parliament gave the 2012 budget bill its first nod of approval. The bill, aimed at meeting the tough conditions of Portugal's bailout by the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, scraps holiday and year-end bonuses for civil servants and raises taxes on a wide range of products and services. The final vote in parliament will take place on November 29th. Unions are planning a general strike for November 24th to protest against the plans. Earlier this year, Portugal became the third euro zone country after Greece and Ireland to get a bailout. It is now enacting painful and unpopular austerity measures to meet the targets of its 78-billion euro EU/IMF bailout. Italy Erupting - Protesters Clash With Riot Police Over Austerity Measures

Italy Erupting - Protesters Clash With Riot Police Over Austerity Measures Italian anti-riot policemen clash with protesters as they demonstrate against the government's economic policy measures near the Italian parliament in Piazza Montecitorio in Rome, Italy, 14 September 2011. Italy's Parliament gave final approval to Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government's austerity measures, a combination of higher taxes, pension reform and slashed spending that sparked street protests in Rome. The Chamber of Deputies passed the package by a vote of 314-300. The Senate, Parliament's upper chamber, already approved the measures. Hundreds of demonstrators, some unleashing smoke bombs and others hurling paint, clashed with police in riot gear in the cobblestone squares and streets near Parliament as lawmakers were voting on the measures designed to fend off a financial crisis threatening much of Europe. Earlier in the day, Berlusconi's government, whose allies had squabbled publicly over the package, won a crucial confidence vote called to discourage debate and hasten approval. European Central Bank and European Union leaders in Brussels had pressed Rome for quick passage to calm markets roiled by a crisis that could endanger the entire 17-member eurozone. But the planned cuts and taxes have angered many Italians, fueling protests similar to those in other European nations grappling with the economic crisis. As the street protest heated up, Rome storekeepers hastily shuttered display ...

"Economic Austerity Measures for the Rest of the World and a Free Lunch for the US"

***ORIGINAL UPLOAD BY RussiaToday*** Permission to repost granted. November 09, 2010 There is no possibility of agreement at the upcoming G20 summit because the US is declaring financial war on other countries, believes American economist Michael Hudson. The US has been pushing China to revalue its currency -- at a time when Washington has been pumping billions of dollars into its economy -- a move viewed by other countries as an attempt to deliberately weaken the greenback. The issue of exchange rates is expected to be one of the toughest discussion points at the G20 summit in South Korea later this week. Michael Hudson, a renowned economist and Wall Street financial analyst and advisor, says the meeting in Seoul will not bring an end to global currency wars. "The US is going to China and saying 'we want you to commit economic suicide just like Japan did. We want you to follow the same way: we want you to re-value your currency, we want you to squeeze your companies, we want you to go bankrupt so we can make our profit at your expense," says Hudson. UK Austerity Measures (1)

A two part discussion about the "austerity" measures introduced by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. Following an independent report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a report that called the budget "regressive" in regard to the high level of taxation against the poor versus the rich, the UK government has sought to defend the progressive elements of its financial package. It is important to remember that the same government, while in opposition, used information from the IFS to attack the Labour government of the day. All the signs are that the current budget will do more to increase the gap between the rich and the poor more than any other budget in the last one hundred years. Somehow the Conservative-Liberal coalition regard the budget as a "progressive" move in the right direction.

Greek workers protest against austerity measures

Greek municipal contract workers in Athens, have protested for a second day, over job losses. On Wednesday, they attempted to storm one of the mayor's offices. At a time when EU and IMF inspectors are visiting the capital to review progress on Greece's economic reforms. Greek protesters try to storm an office of the Athens Mayor. They're demonstrating as some municipal workers are losing their jobs due to the government's austerity programme. Some workers are also occupying City Hall. The cuts remain deeply unpopular among Greeks. Greece received an EU / IMF bailout last year and is struggling to fulfill conditions of that bailout. EU and IMF inspectors are currently in the country, monitoring its economic reforms. They met with Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou. So far, Athens has received 53 billion euros of the 110 billion euro rescue package - and is struggling to reduce its budget deficit from 9.6 percent last year - to 7.4 percent this year - and 2.6 percent in 2014. The European Commission spokesman said on Wednesday they aren't aware of any talks concerning Greek debt restructuring - after press reports some euro zone countries are no longer ruling out restructuring.

IMF austerity measures to remove irish sovereignty over economy

1) re low interest (5%) IMF loans: "mostly it will be used for the banks." 2) Ireland loses sovereignty over economy to IMF: Ireland's government is "handing over... (their) economic independence to personnel from abroad," and "The political system would lose control over big economic decisions." 3) How outrageous that the IMF official compares IMF-imposed austerity measures to dieting! Hey, it wasn't the Irish people who gambled away their money. it was the BANKS. So why do the Irish people have to go on a diet? instead of the BANKS? 4) The super-low 12.5% corporate income tax is "non-negotiable" because "it IS fundamental to our economic and our enterprise culture." 5) Paul Krugman writes today of the Irish Non-bailout: "So, a credit line at 5.8 percent interest. Considering that Ireland was able to borrow at that rate as recently as mid-September, and was falling off a cliff then, why is this supposed to solve the problem? What's the Gaelic for "You've gotta be kidding"?
