Quadrotor Autonomous Flight and Obstacle Avoidance with Kinect Sensor

More info: hybrid.eecs.berkeley.edu This work is part of the STARMAC Project in the Hybrid Systems Lab at UC Berkeley (EECS department). hybrid.eecs.berkeley.edu Researcher: Patrick Bouffard PI: Prof. Claire Tomlin Our lab's Ascending Technologies [1] Pelican quadrotor, flying autonomously and avoiding obstacles. The attached Microsoft Kinect [2] delivers a point cloud to the onboard computer via the ROS [3] kinect driver, which uses the OpenKinect/Freenect [4] project's driver for hardware access. A sample consensus algorithm [5] fits a planar model to the points on the floor, and this planar model is fed into the controller as the sensed altitude. All processing is done on the on-board 1.6 GHz Intel Atom based computer, running Linux (Ubuntu 10.04). A VICON [6] motion capture system is used to provide the other necessary degrees of freedom (lateral and yaw) and acts as a safety backup to the Kinect altitude--in case of a dropout in the altitude reading from the Kinect data, the VICON based reading is used instead. In this video however, the safety backup was not needed. [1] www.asctec.de [2] http [3] www.ros.org [4] openkinect.org [5] http [6] www.vicon.com

DARPA Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM) - Phase 1

DARPA's Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM) program is developing software to perform human-level tasks quickly and with minimal direction. This video shows the ARM robot performing 18 grasping and manipulation tasks using vision, force, and tactile sensing with full autonomy -- no active human control. The DARPA-supplied robot was built using commercial components that include an arm, hand, neck, and head sensors. During rigorous testing in November 2011, the best team achieved 93% success in grasping modeled and unmodeled objects. The ARM program has entered its second phase, where focus turns to complex bimanual manipulation scenarios

Kinect Enabled Autonomous Mini Robot Car Navigation

A Kinect sensor is mounted onto a small car-like robot (a 1:10 VW Touareg). A planar inverse depth model of the ground surface is verified against the depth images provided by the Kinect sensor to build an occupancy grid of the robot's environment. The path the robot takes is then determined by a reactive navigation approach called "tentacles".

Autonomous Robotic Truss Reconfiguration and Manipulation

Learn more: creativemachines.cornell.edu www.jeremyblum.com Accepted for Publication in IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine Robot shown developed by Franz Nigl, Jeremy Blum, and Shuguang Li under the direction of Dr. Hod Lipson. This video presents a robot capable of autonomously traversing and manipulating a 3D truss structure. The robot is able to approach and traverse multiple structural joints using a combination of translational and rotational motions. A key factor in allowing reliable motion and engagements is the use of specially designed structural building blocks comprised of bidirectional geared rods. A set of traversal plans, each comprised of basic motion primitives, were analyzed for speed, robustness, and repeatability. Paths covering eight joints are demonstrated, as well as automatic element assembly and disassembly. We suggest that the robot architecture and truss module design, such as the one presented here, could open the door to robotically assembled, maintained, and reconfigured structures that would ordinarily be difficult, risky, or time consuming for humans to construct.

Self-Driving Car Test: Steve Mahan

We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 to make driving safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient. Having safely completed over 200000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here's Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it's also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met. BMW shows off their semi-autonomous driving system (CDC)

BMW announced their ConnectedDrive Connect (CDC) semi-autonomous driving system back in August, but the company has just released a new video of it in action. While the clip is in German, it shows some fairly relaxed engineers taking their hands off the steering wheel and letting the car drive itself. As we have previously reported, CDC works on pre-mapped highways by pinpointing the car's position and the location of surrounding objects. Once everything has been determined, CDC controls the braking and acceleration like an advanced cruise control system. However, when the car senses it is behind a slowpoke, it looks for an open lane where it can safely merge at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). If an opening is found, the system will steer the vehicle into that lane, pass the slower vehicle and return to its original lane. As Dr. Nico Kaempchen explains, "Our main challenge was to develop algorithms that can handle entirely new situations. In principal, the system works on all freeways that we have mapped out beforehand with [a] centimeter accuracy." He goes on to say CDC ensures the car "adheres to all traffic laws" and sticks to the speed limit.

AUTONOMOUS I

PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN BROUGHT TO FROM THE MORGAN HOTEL IN TEMPLE BAR Since forming years and years ago in a dark damp community hall in Tipperary, Autonomous i have been honing their songwriting and performance skills to the point where their music is influenced as much from within the group as it is externally. These five lads fuse sounds together from a breathtakingly broad sonic palette and have produced a range of original tracks over the years that a well stocked duke box would give it's last dime for! Autonomous i's live shows are varied in the extreme and the band seamlessly narrates through rock, funk and dance inspired grooves with infectious confidence and a cheeky grin. Fronted by one of the most powerful set of lungs on the Irish indie rock scene today, Frah Butler, the band have gigged throughout the country in venues such as Whelans and the Sugar Club in Dublin and The Crane Lane in Cork and are being overwhelmed with positive criticism from the likes of Duke Special who described their music as being 'intriguing and wonderful'. The band's forthcoming self-titled EP, produced by one of Ireland's most sought after producers Ken McHugh, merges Frah's unabashed vocal narratives with intelligent indi rock music to produce some seriously inspired gems. With standout tracks like "Stand up and take it" the music of Autonomous i appeals to indie rock fans and non-indie rock fans alike. Due for release in September. Autonomously Playing Guitar Hero using Simulated PS2 Controller+OpenCV

This is mostly a starter exercise for me to learn more real-time computer vision. Using a Simulated PS2 controller, I can write software to play certain video games autonomously (no human involved). Guitar Hero is a simple game to start with. The software analyzes the video coming from a video capture device in real-time to find the notes on the fret, and sends those button presses back to the console using the simulated PS2 controller. It can start a fresh new career game and play all the way through expert mode all by itself! Possibly play other games fully autonomously as well in the future. The simulated PS2 controller is created using a Teensy 2.0 development board. With cheap (less than $10) adapters, it can also control a PS3 or Xbox 360. More information can be found at: procrastineering.blogspot.com
