BCUSA November Challenge: One Stick Fire

My first attempt at a one stick fire, filmed for the BCUSA November Challenge.
BCUSA Feather sticks & Shavings

Feather Sticks and Shavings Objective- To be able to make feather sticks and shavings. Description- Like I said for the first class we are going to start slow. Slow does not mean unimportant. The ability to make good feather sticks and shavings is a needed skill. It shows you can control you knife and make it do what you want it to do. A pile of properly made fire prep can be the difference between being warm and dry or cold and wet. We want our shavings to be thin and curly. The thinness will make them take a flame easier. The curls allow for air flow. Not only is the shape of our feather sticks vital, but the quantity is also. A pile big enough to fill a baseball hat is the standard. With this amount of tinder you can overcome damp kindling. Materials needed- Fixed blade knife, a straight knot free piece of wood about the size of a broomstick Student Practice- A baseball fat full of good feather sticks and shavings

BCUSA BushClass Twig Fire

Here is the whole fire process from the winter storm video unedited for the class The Twig Fire Objective- To be able to make a sustainable fire using small diameter twigs and branches. Description- Many people prefer using small diameter sticks and twigs to start their fires. It is easier than splitting all of your prep , but not always a sure bet depending on conditions. A few of the keys to this kind of fire are prep and how you gather your prep. As with any thing if you are fully prepared you are more likely to succeed. Our wood needs to be in the proper stages, pencil lead, pencil and thumb size. Just as important is where we gather our materials from. All of our wood should be off the ground when we gather it. Let me repeat, OFF THE GROUND. Many people fail because their wood is wet or damp. Get your materials from dead branches or dead standing wood. If you are unsure if the wood is dead, break it. It should snap and have no green color. If you are still not sure, in the winter you can break it and place it on your lips. If it warms up in a few seconds it is probably dry enough. If it stays cold on your lips it is more than likely green. Materials needed- A knife and matches.
BCUSA Bushclass - 5 man tinder

5 Man-made Tinders Objective- To be able to light man-made tinder with a fire steel. Make tinder to take to the woods. Description- A fire steel and tinder are very important pieces of equipment. We need to master the fire steel and practice with different tinder. There are 2 videos here. The first show how to use a fire steel. It also demonstrates the many items you can use to strike it. Materials needed- 5 man-made tinders,a fire steel, and something to strike it Student Practice- Demonstrate that you have lit the tinders with pictures

BCUSA Bush Class - 2 strand twist / whipping

Sometimes we need a rope that is a little stronger that a single strand piece of cordage. We may need a piece of thicker cordage for a ridge like for a shelter or to hang food to keep the critters out of it. This lesson will cover making that rope your self with the 2 strand twist. This will also help to lay the ground work for making natural cordage. Whipping rope or tool handles is a great skill to own. Once you learn how to do it you will be surprised at how many uses you will find for it.

Offhand Bowdrill Challenge BCUSA

There was a challenge issued on the forum to do the bowdrill with your off hand. I'm a lefty therefore had to do it with my right hand. Sorry for no sound. The wind was about 30mph right into the camera. I made this set onsite from: Salix Negra for the hearth and spindle; Populus Deltoides for the bow and nest; and some punkwood for the pan. I did bring a proven hand block and a piece of 550 for this challenge. The first song is by a guy I went to school with. I think he is in Lawrence still but a great musician! The band name was Meat Flower but I think he is off to greener pastures. reddirtsurvival.com
BCUSA Outing 4, Overnight; mylar bivvy trial, making pine pitch glue

Decided to see if I could make it through a cold night with frost with just a wool blanket and a mylar bivvy sack. The sack is no longer on my best-friend-forever list - reflector blanket & fire is much better for the cold. Thanks to gotrocksinhead for glue recipe.
