Marcel Broodthaers started his career in the arts as a poet, After decades of poverty and destitution he decided to try his hand at the visual arts. His conceptual approach to the institutions of culture, particularly the art museum, captured the attention of avant-garde critics and collectors. This exhibition includes rarely seen works and some of the few paintings ever executed by the artist.

The work is a close copy of the 1914 edition of the french symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé's poem of the same name, but with all the words cut out by laser, in a way that corresponds directly to the typographic layout used by Mallarmé to articulate the text*. A Preface features the entire poem written as a block of text with each line separated by a slash (/). This block-transcription of the Mallarme-Text was carried out in 1969 by Broodthaers. 12 double spreads follow, with immaculately cut out windows standing in for the text. When turning the pages, numerous shadows are being generated by the cutouts. The work is soft bound and feels quite insubstantial. The cover is a facsimile of the original cover as published in 1914 by Librairie Gallimard, with the word 'SCULPTURE' replacing 'POEME' (or 'IMAGE') in ...

James Kalm responds to a gracious invitation from MoMA to attend the press preview of this timely exhibition. Like the coming of summer, or the swallows returning to Capistrano, the cycles in the art world have returned to focus on the practice of painting. Organized by Anne Umland, this show spotlights 50 works of art that are painting, or relate to, the question, "What is Painting?" and displays works from the museum's permanent collection. Ann Temkin, curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture leads viewers through a brief walk-through and delivers an insightful explanation of the works. Artists represented include Philip Guston, Philip Pearlstein, Lee Lozano, AR Penck, George Baselitz, John Baldessari, Lynda Benglis, Lee Bontecou, Marcel Broodthaers, Chuck Close, John Currin, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, et al.

Here is Always Somewhere Else is a 2008 documentary film directed by Rene Daalder and co-produced and edited by Aaron Ohlmann. The film is about the life and work of Dutch/Californian conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader, who in 1975 disappeared under mysterious circumstances at sea in the smallest boat ever to cross the Atlantic. As seen through the eyes of fellow emigrant filmmaker Rene Daalder, the picture becomes a sweeping overview of contemporary art films as well as an epic saga of the transformative powers of the ocean. Featuring work from artists Tacita Dean, Rodney Graham, Marcel Broodthaers, Ger van Elk, Charles Ray, Wim T. Schippers, Chris Burden, Fiona Tan, Pipilotti Rist and many others.

In 1977, Plastic Bertrand started his solo career with the hit single "Ça plane pour moi", composed and written by Alan Ward and originally recorded as Jet Boy, Jet Girl by Elton Motello. He toured Canada, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Europe and the USA, becoming one of the few French-speaking artists to appear in the Billboard chart. He also appeared on a number of major television shows, presenting Jackpot on TF1, Destination Noël on France 2, Due Per Tutti on RAI2 and Supercool on RTBF, which he also produced. Between 1982 and 1985 he lived in Milan, and millions of Italians followed his adventures in a photo-story of which he was the star. With Daniel Balavoine and ABBA's Anni-Frid Lyngstad, he recorded Abbacadabra, a musical tale for children. In the early 1980s he appeared in movies such as Légitime Violence and the short film Baoum. Working with Vladimir Cosma, he wrote several film scores, including Astérix et la surprise de César (Asterix Versus Caesar). In 1987 he represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Amour Amour". This failed to impress the juries, however, scoring only 4 points and placing 21st out of 22 entries. During the 1990s Bertrand explored other facets of music, including songwriting and producing, and also recorded the album Suite Diagonal for Sony in 1994 with Jacques Lanzmann. Forming the company MMD with Pierrette Broodthaers, he produced two albums for David Janssen, an album of classic music ...

In 1977, Plastic Bertrand started his solo career as the credited artist of the international hit single Ça plane pour moi, though in fact the song had been sung and produced by its composer Lou Deprijck with the engineer Phil delire for RKM/Vogue at Studio Morgan in Brussels. Plastic Bertrand received only 0.5% of the song's royalties. Ca Plane Pour Moi would be further adaptated in English as Jet Boy, Jet Girl by Elton Motello (aka Alan Ward). Plastic Bertrand toured Europe, Japan, Australia and North America with Lou Deprijck, becoming one of the few French-speaking artists to appear in the Billboard chart. He also appeared on a number of major television shows, presenting Jackpot on TF1, Destination Noël on France 2, Due Per Tutti on RAI2 and Supercool on RTBF, which he also produced. However, the first 3 albums of Plastic Bertrand were in fact entirely sung in studio by Lou Deprijck and not by Roger Jouret. Between 1982 and 1985 he lived in Milan, and millions of Italians followed his adventures in a photo-story of which he was the star.
