Here is what i take camping/hiking/backpacking minus food water and the clothes on my back. Due to limited time i could not go into detail about what each item was but ask a question and i will respond. The cloths i take are as follows: baseball hat, wicking tee, long sleeve polyester hiking shirt (columbia silver ridge) mountain hardwear shorts, 2 pair under armor 9" inseam boxer brief, 2 pair of wool running socks and solomon trail running shoes, rain jacket. In the winter i add 1 pair of long underwear (top and bottom) sock hat, pull over fleece and a down vest and switch out the shorts for convertable pants. i only wear the long underwear at night too. this set up as shown minus the eno hammock and straps weighs just UNDER 12 lbs! its all you really need ... well all i will ever need. www.packitgourmet.com - amazing food! www.fibraplex.com - Carbon Fiber Tent Poles: cuts half the weight of poles

This video showcases the "lighter side" of backpacking by featuring a trip using my new, less than 5lb pack system. This style of hiking is technically referred to as "Super Ultra Lightweight Backpacking". After much time spent in the field hiking with packs weighing upward of 50lbs, the past few years have found me leaning toward a slightly more "minimalist" approach in regard to my backpacking style. This path first brought me to pack weights of about 20 pounds... ultimately arriving where I am now with a full feature pack weighing less than 5lbs. Don't get me wrong, I like gear as much as the next person. In fact, a variety of gear is not only necessary for certain outdoor pursuits, but mandatory in many instances. With that said, I have taken a serious look at what I actually "need" for certain activities, and have been adopting a "less is more" mindset. This has been more of a person challenge as much as anything. Safety and comfort remain paramount. I am not advocating going into the wilderness under-equipped or unprepared. Significant experience in the field is essentially mandatory to find a balance of what is luxury and what is necessity. Even with this knowledge and experience, these types of gear systems are limited to specific conditions and circumstances. Of course, all of this is only my own opinion and personal experience. I remain open-minded and welcome any insight, experience, and advice that you may have to offer. There is a comprehensive gear review ...

Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. Another must stop location on the backpacker migration up north. Had a ball in Airlie, went out on a boat yesterday to snorkel the reef. The colours of the coral and the diversity of the fish life just blew me away. Thanks to Jetstream for the trip. Also checked out the Barefoot Bushmans Wildlife Park where you can see a variety of Aussie wildlife including a great crocodile show. Tomorrow I go out on a 54 foot Classic Schooner, the Atlanta , for a morning cruise before heading off to Magnetic Island. It's a hard life..... In Airlie I decided that given it is such a big location for back packers, instead of interviewing an Aussie local, I would interview a back packer working at Airlie. The trip ended being 2 night and 3 days of winter wonder. Every year I realize that when breaking trail in powdery snow that the going is slow especially when toting your goods into the woods. Kurt Papke was an excellent hiking partner ... very strong and self-sufficient. I like that in a backpacker! The wind was whipping off of Egge Lake when we pulled in there at around 3:30 so we stealthed up in the woods away from the lake and got into the shelter of trees. Nice to have hammocks for that. My hammock set-up was quick and easy with the straps and rings and biners on my DIY hammock. Kurt used the standard Hennessy knots and lashings and it looked easy for him and quick. Fired up the MSR Whisperlite stove and started making water ... good ol' HOT water! Cocoa Time! Slept in my REI 0º bag with full UQ, BA insulated pad and a blue CCF pad slipped into my SPE. Did not bring the wing pads for the SPE and I wish I had in retrospect. Slept warm and dreamy. Woke earlyish but did not egress the hammock for some time. It was around -5º! Boiled water on my Mini-Atomic alky stove from Tinny at MiniBullDesign and had a hot breakfast from the hammock. Oh Glory! Off to Camp two .... we backtracked and stopped back at my van to resupply for what we knew was going to be a dangerously cold night. I grabbed an second sleeping bag and more white gas. We were only about 15 minutes there. South now to Leskinen Creek. Trail was broken for a while then we had to break. It is so tiring and we ...

11 lb backpacking kit includes pack, sleeping gear, pad, rain gear, poncho/tarp tent with bug netting, water filtering and purification, cooking and eating gear, first aid kit, etc. It's complete, safe, relatively cheap and comfortable. (Comment: Not in the video but in the pack is also a 5 x 10 foot plastic ground cloth made from punture resistant temporary storm window film available at any hardware store....and it weighs only 4 ounces. Also, see "ultralight backpacking kit 2" for what I carry in my pocket.) I also carry a cell phone camera for pictures.

An in-depth review of the gear and equipment that makes up my system for Super Ultra Light Backpacking trips. In this 4 part video series, we take a comprehensive look at one style of lightweight backing which can reduce your overall base pack weight to less than 5 pounds. This style of hiking is technically referred to as "SUL" or "Super Ultra Lightweight Backpacking". After much time spent in the field hiking with packs weighing upward of 50lbs, the past few years have found me leaning toward a slightly more "minimalist" approach in regard to my backpacking style. Here is my gear list for a typical three-season hike. This is everything I carry except a little more food. I like to keep everything light and try to carry on the essentials. Backpacking can be lightweight, no doubt. Don't be one of the boyscouts who ways 110lbs and has a 60lbs pack! Seems like I have seen quite a few of them. PART 1 of 3 ////////////// Sleeping under the stars is a bit overrated for me. Seems the bugs attack, the critters find you, the wind blows away your body heat, frost and condensation soak your bag, then the rain falls, and no matter what your gear gets filthy. A minimalist tent tarp, bivy, or floor-less tent are some ways to avoid to some of those hassles. But my favorite option is a quality designed and constructed lightweight backpacking tent like the ones profiled in this Nutnfancy series of videos. Here I cover most of the design aspects and experience-based opinions on just such a tent. POUs, Firepower vs Mobility, Impact, Livability concerns, Longevity, Ventialtion, Maintenance, Sleeve and Pole Construction, Fabric Choices, Convenience Features, and buying sources are all covered in the series. It would be unrealistic and probably of limited use for me to review certain models since most are so shortlived in the marketplace. Instead I use category representatives and teach the features, construction, sizing, and the many considerations to arm the buyer with the knowledge to make the best purchase choice. Always buy out-of-season whenever possible to save big money; it's very possible to get a ultra-quality BP tent this way for well under $200. Take care of it and it will serve you and your family forever too. Location was the scenic and beautiful Rocky Mountains with Allie the Mountain Dog in tow. A review of my latest DIY project: A homemade backpack for ultra lightweight to super ultralight backpacking trips. Since developing an interest in ultralight backpacking, I've found that one of the challenges inherent to the sport is acquiring the gear necessary for this pursuit. Of course you can spend hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of dollars to get the gear that fits your needs, but I've found that the best way to keep costs low, as well as get a perfectly customized piece of equipment, is to make it yourself. So after putting much thought and research into exactly what I wanted in a UL backpack, I fired up the old sewing machine and went to work. Here is what I came up with... Homemade Ultralight Backpack: Concept: • Custom, durable, and lightweight pack for use in conjunction with SUL gear system. • 3 season use with multi-day, long distance capabilities. • Partially inspired by the GoLite Breeze, the Gossamer Gear G4, and my own specific needs. Specs: • Weight: 5.2 ounces • Volume: Approx. 2000 cubic inches • Size: 22"x12"x5 ½" • Materials: 1.1oz ripstop nylon / snag-less micro-mesh Features: • Frameless pack • Top-loading (with drawstring closure) • Protection flap on top opening • Large external mesh pouch on front • Water bottle pockets on both sides • Shock-cord compression system • Multiple attachment/lashing points • Wide, padded shoulder straps • Slim design hip strap • Triple-stitched seams (pockets & straps sewn thru) * If you would like to make a pack ...

Another Nutnfancy Gear Testing Adventure with friend Cr0cket20. Our goal is a beautiful lake basin at about 9500 feet and as a mid-June hike, it usually is a straight forward route. Not this time. We encounter a lot more snow than we'd thought. It mounds up to 20 feet in places and completely obscures the trail as we gain elevation. Luckily its compacted with the warm temperatures and snow shoes aren't needed. It does increase the difficulty. No matter. We joke and carry on with the higher energy levels that usually accompany the trip's beginning and make some good progress. Topics include our gear, wilderness trapping and spearing, knives, moose, and coming down a mountain in a frying pan.//////////////////////////Music licensed to TNP from Jason Shaw.

In this series I will show discuss and display the items that I keep in my Survival Backpack. You may call it a BOB (bug out bag), GHB (get home bag), 72 hour kit, or any other name. Basically this is a ready to go system that is made up of smaller kits that can help me to survive away from home, and ideally in the wilderness. There are many other videos on YouTube on this same subject. If this interests you spend some time watching many of them to get an overall view of the kits. Each person will pack it a little differently, so the more you see the better you can prepare your kit. As always, thanks for watching!
