On this occasion Jacob William Rees-Mogg Eton, Oxford, Conservative MP and son of Lord William Rees-Mogg, a former editor of The Times launches the now standard if tired attacks on Europe. Somehow the name Bagpuss slipped out leaving Jeremy to pounce on this moment of true interest in an otherwise dreary debate demanding to know "Who is Bagpuss?!" The real Bagpuss is a children's television character described as "an old, saggy cloth cat, baggy, and a bit loose at the seams." So is the British PM Bagpuss? The BBC graphic artists wickedly started imposing large pictures of a particularly sorry looking Bagpuss in the background 4:40. To quote Batman "Damn fine television!" Mogg (bear in mind some call cats Moggies) seemed to sense his faux pas and tried to leave well enough alone. Mercifully, the ever witty Charles Kennedy was able to extend the cat metaphor, as it has recently caused laughs earlier in the political conference season," and dismiss the affair as "hog-wash." Thereby maligning another innocent animal. The quip instantly began trending worldwide on twitter and with a bit of luck may become yet another Paxman classic.
