Berezovsky plays Islamey

From a 2005 recital in Mexico City. This exact performance became my new "Islamey" standard. I already had one from Boris on CD; this one surpasses it in both musicality, spontaneity, and brilliance.
Balakirev - Islamey (Evgeny Kissin Live in Amsterdam 2002)

Balakirev - Islamey (Evgeny Kissin Live in Amsterdam 2002). The best performance of the history. My favourite piano's piece. Islamey: an Oriental Fantasy is a composition for piano by Russian composer Mily Balakirev, written in September 1869.

Glinka/Balakirev - The Lark [Sherry Kim]

This is a piece that I have been working on for the past month. Such a pretty piece! I was recording a video with a friend (which will be coming out in a few days!) and realized I had about an extra half an hour left over to use Lutkin Hall. I decided to run through The Lark, and to my surprise, I got this recording down in one shot. o__o; You can find the sheet music on www.imslp.org best site ever for classical sheet music. Balakirev - Islamey. Oriental Fantasy for Piano (1869, 1902 version)

Islamey - Oriental Fantasy for Piano (1869, rev. 1902) This is a highly virtuostic piece for solo piano by Russian composer Mily Balakirev (1837-1910), the mentor of the Mighty Handful. He was inspired to compose this work while traveling in the Caucasus. Balakirev describes his experience in an 1892 letter: "The majestic beauty of luxuriant nature there and the beauty of the inhabitants that harmonises with it -- all these things together made a deep impression on me... Since I interested myself in the vocal music there, I made the acquaintance of a Circassian prince, who frequently came to me and played folk tunes on his instrument, that was something like a violin. One of them, called Islamey, a dance-tune, pleased me extraordinarily and with a view to the work I had in mind on Tamara I began to arrange it for the piano. The second theme was communicated to me in Moscow by an Armenian actor, who came from the Crimea and is, as he assured me, well known among the Crimean Tatars." Pianist: Alexander Paley

Louis Kentner plays Balakirev Sonata No.2 (I)

First recording (1949) of Balakirev's Sonata No.2 in B-flat minor, op.5, by Louis Kentner. I. Andantino II. Mazurka. Moderato www.youtube.com III. Intermezzo. Larghetto www.youtube.com IV. Allegro non troppo, ma con fuoco www.youtube.com ~ Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev (1837 - 1910) Russian pianist, conductor and composer. Born in Nizhny-Novgorod, the son of a minor government official. His early piano lessons were with his mother, supplemented by a summer visit to Moscow in 1847, when he had some lessons from Alexander Dubuque, a pupil of John Field. It was later in his schooling that he was introduced, through his teacher, to Alexander Ulibishev, a landowner, patron of music and writer of books on Mozart and Beethoven. It was through Ulibishev that he was to receive every encouragement, with access to music and opportunities to hear performances at his house, however inadequate these may sometimes have been. Entry to the musical world of St. Petersburg was effected when Ulibishev took Balakirev there in 1855, introducing him to Glinka and allowing him the opportunity to give public concerts, with considerable success. Nevertheless Balakirev found difficulty in supporting himself, although the death of Ulibishev in 1858 brought him a legacy of 1000 roubles, two violins and his patron's music library. Balakirev's subsequent career brought him, initially, friendship with Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin, his meeting with the last-named in late 1862, nine months ...

Balakirev Islamey Bronfman Rec.1998

This performance by Yefim Bronfman will not please those who think that Islamey can only be played like---name your favorite recording. For instance, I have had the old 78rpm 1936 recording of Simon Barere for well over fifty years. It is a fabulous performance and is the best (in my opinion)of the "pull out all the stops" recordings. Barere's interpretation is one way of playing this composition, but not the only way.It is played here by a pianist with a big technique, and more importantly, a pianist who is a discerning musician. Isn't it nice to hear the left hand 16th note triplets in the Andante Espressivo section? And isn't it nice to hear all of the notes clearly articulated in the surrounding sections? (However,Barere's accuracy is phenomenal concidering the tempo he sets for himself). Bronfman's performance made me realize that this composition is good enough to be interpreted in more than one stereotyped way. Barere's conception of Islamey, recorded in 1936,originated with him. It was not a copy of someone elses's interpretation.Like all great pianists,Barere could think for himself as can Yefim Bronfman. This is not a fake performance with notes left out to facilitate speed with the pedal nailed to the floor to cover up a less than immaculate performance. I recently heard Yefim Bronfman give a magnificent performance of the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Bronfman has recorded the complete ...
Balakirev - Valse melancholique (pf. Vincent Lo)

Surprise! This is video of myself performing a piece by my favourite composer. Valse mélancholique is the second of five waltzes composed by Mily Balakirev. It follows a sort of rondo form: ABABACABA Coda. The C section is longer than the A and B sections, and can be subdivided further into C and C'. It features a characteristic pedal point on the tonic which brings out the warmth in contrast to the more brooding A and B sections. Essentially, the C section repeats itself with more elaboration with broken octaves in alternating directions, which creates a sort of elegance. As with much of Balakirev's music, this waltz is full of quick modulations that constantly pull the listener deeper and deeper into the music, creating a sort of immersive effect on the listener. You can read more about Balakirev on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org . Sorry for the crappy-ass video and audio quality. I really want to share with you my appreciation for Balakirev's music, but I only have a crappy webcam. :( Hope you enjoy it! Comments and suggestions are welcome. .

The Lark (Glinka - Balakirev)

Listen in stereo: www.youtube.com "The Lark" (Жаворонок) was originally No. 10 of a group of twelve songs that Glinka wrote in 1840 and entitled "Farewell to St. Petersburg". Mili Balakirev, born 1836, got to know Glinka in 1855 and admired him deeply. Glinka stimulated Balakirev to start composing. He has paraphrased several of Glinka's works, "The Lark" being the most famous of them. This work owes to Glinka the exceptionally beautiful and sad melody, and to Balakirev the wonderful flowing figuration. PS Whoever can translate and explain me the lyrics of Glinka's original, I'll dedicate my next video to you.... :-D

Balakirev Islamey

Me playing the Oriental Fantasy. Before you start complaining about dynamics and pedal, do note that the place I'm playing at has really bad acoustics, which make pretty much every note ring out pretty loudly. This also forced me to take a few bits slightly slowly so that we can actually hear the chord changes. Playing this piece sure is tiring! My arms felt super heavy after I had finished it! Anyway, I'm glad that I made it to the end without breaking down :p Merci à Stéphane pour avoir filmé!
