Swinging London: Ambrose & His Orch. - Too Many Tears, 1932

Bert AMBROSE (1897-1971), the bandleader & violinist, in 1927 he was elected musical director of the exclusive Mayfair Hotel at a then record annual fee of £10000 and whose outfit was by the early 1930s regarded as crème de la crème among British bands. He paid the best money and got the finest players, many of whom went on to become bandleaders themselves. It might be interesting to ponder just how many of the rich and famous clients who danced to Ambrose's sophisticated arrangements were aware that their favourite was the son of an East End rag-and-bone man. Kapelle Oscar Joost: Herr Ober, zwei Mokka

Oskar Joost, a bandleader who was very succesful in the thirties began to make records in Sep.-Oct. 1929 in Berlin. Already at April 15. 1930 he recorded the title „Herr Ober zwei Mokka". Two takes exist (BLR 6268-2 and BLR 6270-2) both puplished on Electrola EG 1890. The first one you can hear here. The singer in these records is no listed, but his hard accent blurts out the truth. Last August 2007 I heard per random Al Bowlly on Homocord „Say Mister" and after that „Herr Ober zwei Mokka" and after comparing both titles, I was sure „it´s the same singer" Please tell me your opinion on this, if you like. Thanks.

Dajos Béla Tanzorchester plays tango from Berlin, 1929

DAJOS BÉLA (Leo Golzmann), violinist and a bandleader of the Weimar Republic. Born in Jewish Russian/Hungarian family in Kiev (1897), died in La Falda, Argentine (1978). As a 9 yo boy he gave his first violin public performance in Kiev. During WWI he was a soldier of the Tzarist army and when the war was over, he attended conservatory studies in Moscow, in the violin class of prof. prof. Michajl Press and Issay Barmas. After completing education, he left for Germany, where he started performing as violinist in the night cafes and clubs of North Berlin, using a pseudonym „Dajos Béla" (Dajos was his Hungarian mother's maiden name). It did't take long when he was invited to record his first sides for Carl Lindström Aktien Gesellschaft (labels: Odeon, Parlophon and Beka), using the nick names of Take Banescu, Arpád Városz, Jenő Fesca, Sándor Jószi) and, in following years, for Homocord label as Giorgi Vintilescu, Nicu Vladescu, or Joan Florescu for Grammophon. Also the bands he conducted had many etiquette-names: Dajos Béla Künstler-Kapelle, Dajos Béla Tanzorchester, Dajos Béla Geigen-Primas, Dajos Béla Salon-Orchester, etc. In later 1920s his orchestra -- due to the hundreds of recordings and numerous public performances, to the cosmopolitan and thirsty for international noveltes Berliner audiences, where he presented American or British hot dance jazz nubers - Dajos Béla's band becomes ex aequo with Marek Weber, Paul Godwin, Julian Fuhs, Mitja Nikisch - one of leading ...

BEBOP JAZZ - James Moody, Eddie Jefferson

BEBOP JAZZ from James Moody (tenor sax, bandleader) & Eddie Jefferson (vocal), c. 1950-55! This video shows two versions of the same song, intermixed. The first recording was made somewhere around 1950, titled "BLUE AND MOODY" by James Moody and His Quintet, shown here on the original 78 rpm (fast-spinning) record. About 5 or so years later, a "Vocalese" version of that song was recorded (played here on the original 33 rpm slow-spinning record), re-titled "BIRDLAND STORY", with again James Moody and his band (same one who recorded original instrumental version), with vocal (& words written) by Eddie Jefferson. This style of singing, matching a famous instrumental solo note-for-note, became known as Vocalese. My favorite artist of this style is actually King Pleasure, although Eddie did it first. Will post some great King Pleasure & other discs someday, if I ever find the time (???). ENJOY!
Blanche Calloway - It's Right Here For You (1931)

Blanche Calloway (1902-1978) was bandleader Cab Calloway's older sister. Cab and Blanche never recorded together. She had a very good way of entertaining. She was wild and wiry in certain things and very sensitive in others ......Although Cab may not say this to himself, all of his style was from her. His sister taught him everything he knew about performing. Blanche studied music at Morgan State College, but dropped out and began performing in local various local clubs. In 1923, she joined the touring cast of the Noble Sissle - Eubie Blake musical "Shuffle Along". She later appeared in James P. Johnson's show "Plantation Days". In 1927, the show closed and she stayed in Chicago, working in various clubs. In 1925, one of her very earliest recordings was singing with Louis Armstrong. She toured extensively and even worked New York City's exclusive 'Ciro Club'. In 1931, she and Andy Kirk's Twelve Clouds of Joy Orchestra were headliners in Philadelphia's Pearl Theatre. "Puddin Head" lured six men (including Ben Webster) from Jap Allen's then new Kansas City band to join him and Blanche, with local New York musicians filling the remaining chairs in a band they called "Blanche Calloway and Her Joy Boys". She was the first black woman to front an all-male orchestra. Blanche Calloway And Her Joy Boys - It's Right Here For You (1931) Victor 22717

March 20, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, as Lawrence Ira Kahn) is an American salsa music performer, composer and producer. Larry Harlow was born into a musical family of Jewish American descent.[1] He is a son of the late Rose and Buddy Kahn. His mother was an opera singer with the stage name Rose Sherman in New York. His father was the bandleader at the Latin Quarter (nightclub) in New York under the name Buddy Harlowe. The young Harlow, is affectionately nicknamed el Judio Maravilloso (The Marvelous Jew). He is the director of the Latin Legends of Fania, among other groups. Larry Harlow excelled at an early age at various instruments. The music and culture of New Yorks Latino community led him to Cuba where he began an intense study of Afro-Cuban music. Harlow, who is known for his innovative blend of Afro-Cuban and Jazz styles of piano playing, studied music in the 1950s in Cuba but was unable to complete his degree before the Cuban Revolution forced him to leave the island. Jack TEAGARDEN & His All Stars " Jack Armstrong Blues " !!!

RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH MR JACK TEAGARDEN & HIS ALL STARS !!! Jack Teagarden was a trombone player, singer, and band leader whose career spanned from the 1920s territory and New York jazz scenes to shortly before his death in 1964. Teagarden was not a successful band leader, which may explain why he is not as widely known as some other jazz trombonists, but his unusual singing style influenced several other important jazz singers, and he is widely regarded as the one of the greatest, and possibly the greatest, trombonist in the history of jazz. Teagarden was born in 1905 in Vernon, Texas. Born Weldon Lee Teagarden or Weldon John Teagarden (more sources say Weldon Lee, but John makes more sense considering his nickname), Jacks earliest performances were working with his mother Helen, who played ragtime piano, in theaters. His siblings also became professional musicians: his younger sister Norma played piano, his younger brother Charlie, trumpet, and his brother Clois (Cub), drums. Jack Teagarden began playing piano at age five, took up baritone at age seven or eight, and had settled on trombone by age ten. Some sources claim his unusual style of trombone playing stemmed from the fact that he began playing before he was big enough to play in the farther positions. He moved to Chappell, Nebraska, with his family in 1918, but by 1921 was back in Texas playing with Peck Kelleys Bad Boys. Through the early and mid 1920s, he played with several other territory bands, including ...

Harry James was probably the most famous trumpeter of the twentieth century due to his many hit records, feature films and big band tours across the United States, Europe and Latin America throughout the 1940's, '50's, '60's and '70's. He performed up to the very end playing a Los Angeles concert date one week before he died, July 5, 1983 at age 67. Most of the major trumpeters of the last 50 years consider James to have been one of their major influences both for style and technique.

Abe Lyman Orchestra-12th St. Rag

Abe Lyman (August 4, 1897 - October 23, 1957) was a popular bandleader from the 1920s to the 1940s. He made recordings, appeared in films and provided the music for numerous radio shows, including Your Hit Parade. His name at birth was Abraham Simon Lymon. Abe and his brother Mike changed their last name to Lyman because they both thought it sounded better. Abe learned to play the drums when he was young, and at the age of 14 he had a job as a drummer in a Chicago café. Around 1919, Abe was regularly playing music with two other notable future big band leaders, Henry Halstead and Gus Arnheim in California. In Los Angeles Mike opened the Sunset, a night club popular with such film stars as Mary Pickford, Norma Talmadge, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. When Abe's nine-piece band first played at the Sunset, it was a success, but the club closed after celebrities signed contracts stating they were not to be seen at clubs. For an engagement at the Cocoanut Grove in The Ambassador Hotel on April 1, 1922, Abe added a violinist and saxophonist. Opening night drew a large crowd of 1500 guests in the Cocoanut Grove, plus another 500 more outside. After the band cut their first record under the local label Nordskog, they moved a year later to Brunswick Records where they made many recordings. Maynard Ferguson - Birdland

Walter Maynard Ferguson, best know for his extreme high register control on trumpet, was a Canadian jazz trumpet player and bandleader. Born in Verdun, Quebec (now part of Montreal) Maynard by the age of four was playing piano and violin but at 9 years of age he switched to cornet. At age thirteen, Maynard first soloed as a child prodigy with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra and was heard frequently on the CBC, notably featured on a "Serenade for Trumpet in Jazz" written for him by Morris Davis. Maynard won a scholarship to the French Conservatory of Music where he studied from 1943 through 1948 with Bernard Baker. Maynard dropped out of Montreal High School at age 15 to more actively pursue a music career, performing in dance bands led by Stan Wood, Roland David, and Johnny Holmes. During this period, Maynard came to the attention of numerous American bandleaders and began receiving offers to come to the United States. Maynard moved to the United States in 1949 and initially played with the bands of Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey, and Charlie Barnet. The Barnet band was notable for a trumpet section that also included Doc Severinsen, Ray Wetzel, Johnny Howell, and Rolf Erickson. When Barnet temporarily retired in 1949 and disbanded his orchestra, Maynard was free to accept an offer to join Stan Kenton's newly formed Innovations Orchestra, a 40-piece jazz concert orchestra with strings. Among his earliest appearances on record was the 1983 LP Versions, headlined by former Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, and during the remainder of the decade he established himself as a fine fusion sideman, often in the company of vocalist Mark Winkler. Riney's debut date as a leader was the 1988 Spindletop label release Lay It on the Line, followed later that same year by At Last; he remained a prolific performer, issuing Playing with Fire in 1990, but after 1991's Talk to Me did not lead another session prior to Dark Hero in 1996. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Fania Salsa (2 Hard Songs) - Angel Canales

1 - Dos Gardenias 2 - La Humanidad Angel Canales, known as "El Diferente" at a time when mainstream popular culture was embracing all manner of picturesque characters representative of the individual and societal rebellions of the moment. But Angel Canales was an artist in the Latin/salsa industry which had always been resistant to drastic change. As a bandleader and stage personality he did not fit into any of the generally accepted archetypal personae for fronting a Latin/salsa orchestra. Bandleaders and singers were either suave, worldly, patrician, connoisseurs of taste or they were bad boys or lovers. The zany and unpredictable yet self-assured Canales was an anomaly; zany and unpredictable was usually expressed in the context of self deprecating foolishness and Angel Canales was nobody's fool. Nor was he a countercultural revolutionary although a staunchly conservative industry perceived him as such and the result was the same. His music was infrequently played on commercial air and the lack of exposure ultimately affected his ability to secure work for the orchestra and he gradually distanced himself from the industry, concentrating instead on outside business interests. In 1990, a disenchanted and disillusioned Angel Canales tossed the arrangements for his music into the surf at Jones Beach, symbolically ending his musical career, and moved his family to Miami where he established a thriving diamond cutting business. Angel was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and moved ...
Herbie Hancock & John Mayer Stitched Up

Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, bandleader and composer.[1] As part of Miles Davis's "second great quintet", Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the "post-bop" sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Hancock's best-known solo works include "Cantaloupe Island", "Watermelon Man" (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaria.
