Les's classic was inspired by the plight of the city of Berlin, which, at the time the song was written, was divided by the infamous Wall separating East and West Berlin. The western half of the city was an "island", entirely surrounded by the Communist German Democratic Republic (DDR). Today is nine months since the untimely passing of composer, mellotronist, & BJH luminary Woolly Wolstenholme. Although he probably would not have approved of this amateur travesty, I do it only because his work has inspired me. So it's his fault really. Perhaps one day I'll apologise in person, and we'll have a laugh about it. I thought it would be interesting to turn his original lyrics on their head, and give the song a more upbeat feel. The sentiment reflects what happens inside my soul when I sit in the garden on a warm day - all the pictures were taken there this summer. The BJH anorak might spot some lyrical cross references in the second verse.
