This is the third episode in the series of Barking. In this episode I will show you the beginning exercises on how to teach your dog not to bark on a walk. Stay tuned and Subscribe to see other exercises that are very useful for reactive dogs and dogs that are hyperactive. All these exercises benefit ANY dog, not just fearful, reactive or aroused dogs. These same exercises are GREAT for dogs with little impulse control, the kind of dog that wants to pull towards everything on a walk. ----------------------- When a dog becomes aroused or reactive, it is due to chemicals being released by the brain, effecting the dogs behavior. Not only does a dogs behavior change because of these chemicals and stress hormones, but their heart beat, respiration, and blood flow will change too. Jerking a dogs neck will not reduce these chemicals, instead it will INCREASE them. Barking can be reinforcing, so the more a dog is allowed to bark the more likely they will continue barking in the future. When you and your dog are surprised on a walk and your dog starts to bark, simply say "Let's Go" and move briskly in the opposite direction. You can use this cue whenever you change direction unexpectedly or need to move from an area that is causing your dog to be over their threshold. This dog training video outlines a plan for beginning to counter condition a dog to certain types of people that a dog becomes reactive to. This video can also be used as a way to socialize young puppies to weird things in the environment. Another useful application of these exercises would be for a dog and handler team practicing to take a Canine Good Citizen test, as well as proofing a Therapy dog or Service dog for all types of situations they might encounter while on the job. It is very common for dogs to become reactive to anything out of the ordinary. We have selectively bred them to be this way. Many dogs will become reactive or show fear to stimuli such as a weird hat, a cane, a walker, a stroller, a person with bags, a big jacket, strange movement and anything that changes a persons profile. You can set up training games to change your dogs emotional response from fear or arousal to calm friendliness using counter conditioning. Watch this video to check out what you can do. -------- Another thing you can do to speed up the process, is to leave these scary items around in your house for the dog to habituate to and investigate. You can also wear them. If your dog is fearful of people with gloves, wear gloves when you watch TV in the evening every once in a while. So, I took the behavior problem of Barking at the doorbell and made it the trigger for the dog to go to his crate and close the crate door. There are other levels of the trick in case some dog owners were not able to teach that one. They could train the dog to just go to a crate or a dog bed instead. I will be heading to the APDT conference in Atlanta to receive my award. I hope to meet many of my YouTube subscribers there and hopefully spread the word about my YouTube channel. As many of you know I train dogs and cats using clicker training and positive reinforcement. I do not use positive punishment. Croup is caused by viruses. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, and a typical bark-like cough. The diagnosis is based on symptoms.
