Der Bastian handelt von einem Lehramtsstudenten in München, der nach seinen letzten Examen die Freiheit vor dem Antritt seiner ersten Stelle genießt. Er verliebt sich in eine junge Ärztin, die er mit seiner unkonventionellen Art zu erobern versucht, was ihm schließlich gelingt. Bastian ist sehr gutmütig, und seine Hilfsbereitschaft bringt ihn öfter in unangenehme Situationen, so lässt er eine junge Mutter, mit der er vor Jahren ein Verhältnis hatte, bei sich wohnen und „flüchtet schließlich zu seiner Freundin. Am Ende des Romans holt ihn die Wirklichkeit ein, und er muss sich ihr in Form seiner Anstellung als Grundschullehrer im Bayerischen Wald stellen. Der Roman wurde 1972 unter der Regie von Rudolf Jugert mit Horst Janson in der Titelrolle als 13-teilige Serie verfilmt und ab dem 2. Juli 1973 im Vorabendprogramm des ZDF ausgestrahlt. In weiteren Rollen waren unter anderem Lina Carstens (als Bastians umtriebige Großmutter), Karin Anselm, Monika Schwarz und Friedrich von Thun zu sehen. Die Figur des Bastian von Horst Janson als liebenswerter aber eigenwilliger, zudem langhaariger und eher unordentlicher junger Mann verkörpert brachte auch einem eher gesellschaftlich konservativ eingestellten Publikum den ansonsten noch oft verschmähten Typ jenes „ewigen Studenten näher, der sich an viele überkommene Regeln nicht mehr halten will. Der Bastian war mit bis zu 15 Millionen Zuschauer pro Folge eine der erfolgreichsten Serien der deutschen Fernsehgeschichte.
