Bedok Residences' units sell like hotcakes
Over three-quarters of Bedok Residences units released for sale were snapped up on the first day of their launch on Wednesday. The condominium near Bedok Central boasts 583 units, of which 450 were released for sale. Out of the 350 units sold, 15 per cent are one-bedroom units, 28 per cent are one-bedroom plus study units, 36 per cent are two-bedroom units, 16 per cent are three-bedroom units, 4 per cent are four-bedroom units and 1 per cent are penthouses. Units are priced between S$1100 and S$1500 per square foot. While the price of a unit is higher than most properties in the east, buyers said they did not mind due to its location in the mature estate. "It's in Bedok, I grew up here. It's also located at Bedok Central, so it's pretty convenient," said a potential buyer. "It's the location. We have an MRT nearby, a bus terminal, and it's relatively near to town and the airport," said another. Co-developer CapitaLand Residential Singapore said most buyers rushed in to make their selection without even viewing the showrooms. Bedok Residences is an integrated development, with homes built atop a shopping mall and an upcoming transportation hub. The project has attracted some attention, not least because of queues that had formed since Sunday, as units are sold on a first-come-first-served basis. SINGAPORE: National water agency PUB says the water treatment process at its Bedok plant is stringent, ensuring that its water is safe to drink. The assurance comes after part of a decomposed body was found floating in the nearby Bedok Reservoir. The water treatment process at the Bedok facility takes six steps, two of which involve an enhanced disinfecting technology called ozonation. The treatment starts at four tanks, each containing high-voltage electricity. Ozone - a gas converted from oxygen - is produced in the tanks. When infused with water, ozone kills bacteria and micro-organisms like algae and plankton which float on the water surface initially. A coagulant called aluminium sulphate is then used to clump the dead particles. Due to their combined weight, the dead particles sink to the bottom of the tanks, leaving clarified water at the top. At this point, the water looks relatively clean, but it will go through three more steps to ensure it is safe to drink. Ozone is introduced to the process once more, this time as a disinfectant. The ozonated water is then passed through filters to remove finer particles. To sustain the disinfection, chlorine is added, together with lime and fluoride. And in four hours, the process is complete. PUB says this is all part of a robust water supply system. SINGAPORE : PUB officers found a decomposed partial body floating in Bedok Reservoir on Monday morning. The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were called to the scene at 10.30am to help retrieve the body. MediaCorp understands that just the lower half of the body was found, and it is not known if it is male or female. It was supposed to be just another day at Bedok Reservoir for kayaking coach Grayson Ong. But with a naval diving response team parked just beside the water, he knew something was amiss. He said: "It is very very deep, you just go down, five feet away can be nearly overhead, and it is not easy for you to stand, it is rocky...and very slippery. So for (their) safety...the public should not walk - whether you are a swimmer or not a swimmer - into the water." The news that a dead body was found did not stop some people from enjoying a day kayaking at the reservoir. Most of them said they were not too worried about the dead body, although some of them wished someone had told them earlier. Tan Jun Wen, a member of the Temasek Polytechnic Kayak Racing Team, said: "Maybe they could (have) alerted the public to not use the reservoir first. (They could) wait until they find the other part of the body then allow the public to use the reservoir again."
