And he says this jump in beekeeping enthusiasm merged neatly with press coverage of Colony Collapse Disorder and increased public perception in the importance of honeybees. With all the uncapped and capped queen cells and with so many frames with eggs and larvae I decided to split my hive. Because the queen cells will hatch in a few days I am going to let the hive raise their queen instead of me buying a queen cell and because there are not any mated queens available to buy for the new hive. Doing it this way I will "lose" two weeks of egg laying but I am not concerned about that. Should I be? If all goes well the new queen will hatch, kill the other queen larvae, fly out and get mated, several times, and start laying eggs in two weeks, if not sooner. That is how nature does it without human intervention. As a backyard beekeeper I have "helped" nature by splitting the hive instead of letting the hive swarm. This way the hive doubles in size, which is why a hive swarms, but I get to keep all the bees, instead of losing half of them.
