Ella Fitzgerald - Begin The Beguine

The "Cole Porter Songbook" from 1956 was Ella's first effort for the newly formed Verve Records, and it inaugurated Fitzgerald's Songbook series, each of the eight albums in the series focusing on a different composer of the canon known as the Great American Songbook. This particular one was arranged and conducted by Buddy Bregman & His Orchestra. Fitzgerald's manager, (and the producer of many of her albums), Norman Granz, visited Cole Porter at the Waldolf-Astoria, and played him this entire album. Afterwards, Porter merely remarked, "My, what marvelous diction that girl has". I think Cole Porter must have been the master of the understatement.

Play List : www.youtube.com When they begin the beguine, it brings back the sound of music so tender, It brings back a night of tropical splendor, it brings back a memory ever green. I'm with you once more under the stars, and down by the shore an orchestra's playing Even the palms seem to be swaying, when they begin the beguine. To live it again is past all endeavor, except when that tune clutches my heart, And there we are, swearing to love forever, and promising never, never to part. What moments divine, what rapture serene, Till clouds come along to disperse the joys we had tasted, And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted, I know but too well what they mean. So don't let them begin the beguine, let the love that was once a fire remain an ember; Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember when they begin the beguine. Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, make them play, Till the stars that were there before return above you, Till you whisper to me once more, Darling, I love you! And we suddenly know what heaven we're in, when they begin the beguine When they begin the beguine.

Giuseppi Logan playing Begin the Beguine NYC jazz musician composer Tompkin Square Park

Giuseppi Logan is alive despite misinformation that he had died and you can see him playing Begin Beguine in Tompkins Square Park. Jan. 14, 2008 just remade this video with the rumor announcement he will be playing at Bowery Poetry Club.... Below read what he expressed to me and listen to his moving performance in a deserted park near where he used to live in the '60's and I can't express to you how cold it was the morning I flimed this. I ran home and posted this youtube. Giuseppe Logan is homeless and needs all kinds of patronage and support. It was a freezing bitter cold morning in Tompkin Square Park and the park was pretty desolate except for Giuseppe's heart felt moving rendition of Begin Beguine by Cole Porter...a magical East Village moment. Tim Madison was the first person to reach out to me because my youtube and explain the history of Giuseppe's achievements and tell me how moving it was to watch my video. I was interviewed by Tim January 8 and he told me how moved he was by the video and he uplifted me with his knowledge and caring of GL. Tim is based in Michigan and he is very familiar with Giuseppe's records, contribution and history. He was able to contact Giuseppe because I posted his tele. no with his permission and I look forward to reading Tim's articles when they come out. Giuseppe suggested I google him and here are just a few links plus a youtube of him in Tompkins so many years ago! plus this youtube www.youtube.com but the youtube has a different ...

Julio Iglesias - Begin The Beguine 1981

Good quality video recorded from Top Of The Pops 1981. Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva (born September 23, 1943), better known simply as Julio Iglesias, is a Spanish singer who has sold over 300 million records worldwide in 14 languages and released 77 albums. According to Sony Music Entertainment, he is one of the top 10 best selling music artists in history. While Iglesias rose to international prominence in the 1970s and 1980s as a performer of romantic ballads, his success has continued on as he entered new musical endeavors. In the 1960s, he studied law in Madrid and was a goalkeeper for one of Real Madrid's football team. On September 22, 1963, he was involved in a car crash, resulting in an injury to his spinal cord. He said, "I had a car accident; very, very strange car accident...I lost control of the car and rolled it, resulting in what they call 'paraparexia,' which is not a paraplegi. It's a compression in the spinal cord, in the sense of the neck...my spinal cord; and I was very, very ill for three years." His doctors thought he would never walk again; indeed, his legs were left permanently weakened, and they continued to require therapy as of late October 2010. However, slowly, he began recovering his health. To develop and increase the dexterity of his hands, he began playing guitar. When he recovered from his accident, he resumed academic studies and traveled to the United Kingdom to study the English language, first in Ramsgate, then at Bell Educational ...

Cole Porter: Begin the Beguine - Joe Loss & Chick Henderson, 1939

Joe Loss and His Band, Voc. Chick Henderson Begin the Beguine (Cole Porter), Regal Zonophone 1939 Chick HENDERSON (born Henderson Rowntree) one of Britains most popular singers in the late 1930s. He was born in Hartlepool, North England in 1912. As a boy Chick loved to sing and was an active member of a church choir. He was heard by Harry Leader and given an audition, who immediately signed him up in 1935. Chick started recording in 1935 and made three sides with a band for the Eclipse Label. In August 1935 he made his first broadcast on the BBC and a few months later he joined the Joe Loss Band and became his principal singer. Chick and Joe Loss went on to record over 250 tracks. Chick Henderson was a shy and modest person who loved to spend quiet weekends with his family and friends, but at least once a month he was in the recording studio with Joe Loss, usually putting down about four numbers each session. Very few recordings required more than one take. A tall, handsome man with a rich, strong vocal delivery, Chick quickly became a great favorite among young women who formed his core audience. He appeared on postcards and magazine covers. His best seller was „Begin The Beguine which sold over a million copies, the only recording by a 1930s vocalist to achieve such a triumph. In 1940 Chick recorded also with Harry Roy, with Organ Dance Band & Me, and with London Piano Accordion Band. His last recording session was in 1942 in Glasgow with Joe Loss. Swing from Brussels (1) Begin the Beguine - Robert de Kers & his Vibraswingers (1941)

Just as I was doing this series on swing music from Belgium and was wondering what records to feature next, I discovered a great number of swing and jazz records at yesterday's flea market in Brussels. These had obviously belonged to someone's collection as the records were in excellent condition and of high quality... Unfortunately 2 dogs were fighting for the same bone... so I did not manage to get the Django Reinhardt records (Django playing "Bei Dir war es immer so schön" - a release on the Belgian Rythme label) but I did get a good amount of Belgian swing records (Stan Brenders! ) as well as rare recordings by French singer Léo Marjane and the Comedian Harmonists (singing "Bon Voyage" in French)... The present video features a record bought yesterday. It is a swinging version of the Cole Porter standard "Begin the Beguine", with a dream like quality. Perhaps the best known big band versionof "Begin the Beguine" is the one by Artie Shaw. Trumpeter Robert de Kers (1906-87) was another important Belgian musician of the swing era... Playing in several bands from the 1920s onwards, he gained fame as founder of Josephine Baker's "Baker Boys" with whom she went on tour in the early 1930s. Other muscians included Jean Omer, Oscar Alemán, Arthur Saguet, Fernand Coppetiers to cite a few... After his return to Belgium in 1933 he formed his "all stars band" which played with different musicians in fashionable clubs and hotels in Belgium and abroad (Holland, Italy...) as well as ...

Ella Fitzgerald & Glenn Miller - Begin the Beguine play in Broadway Melody of 1940

Broadway Melody of 1940 is a 1940 MGM movie musical starring Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell and George Murphy. It was directed by Norman Taurog and features music by Cole Porter, including "Begin the Beguine". The film was the fourth and final entry in MGM's "Broadway Melody" series of films, and is notable for being the only on-screen pairing of Astaire and Powell, who were considered the finest movie musical dancers of their time. "Begin the Beguine" is a song written by Cole Porter (1891--1964). Porter composed the song at the piano in the bar of the Ritz Hotel in Paris. In October 1935, it was introduced by June Knight in the Broadway musical Jubilee produced at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell danced to an instrumental version in Broadway Melody of 1940.
