Buff and Rhett start off by explaining how House Shoes, Jackson Perry and Haircut (Aka Mayer Hawthorne) played an integral role in the creation of Crown Royale the group. As the interview continues Buff says that growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan is very different than growing up in Detroit and gives him and Athletic Mic League (his original group) the freedom to craft their music and lyrics without feeling the need to talk about gunplay, what is going on in the streets, etc. Buff continues by saying that Detroit music is a huge influence on what he does and that he learned from Dilla, Slum Village, Proof, D12 and Eminem. Classic Albums: Nirvana -- Nevermind There possibly isnt an album in history that is as genre defining as Nirvana's Nevermind. Released in 1991, it single-handedly was responsible for the birth of what became to be known as grunge and has gone on to sell millions. Nevermind was the second album from the Seattle trio and the first on the DGC label (its predecessor Bleach was released on the Sub Pop label). It was produced by Butch Vig (also the drummer for the band Garbage)and mixed by Andy Wallace. Nirvanas surviving members Krist Novoselic (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums) talk candidly about their past, the recording of Nevermind and about Kurt Cobain and the legacy that he has left behind. Travis explains the meaning behind the title and how DJ AM would include James Brown samples on their mixtapes and live performances together. AM was an influence to Travis helping push his musical boundaries even further and introducing him to new hip hop and dubstep. The Airplane's legendary and historic second album in it's entirety (probably my #1 favorite release of all-time and this is coming from a die-hard Black Sabbath, King Crimson & Amy Winehouse fan and of course the JA) ****************************************************************************************** TECHNICAL NOTE: The original 1966 RCA stereophonic mix is presented here, famously known for it's lush reverberation effect (the way I love it). Most of the reverb you hear was actually the result of the larger tracking rooms (with high ceilings) the group utilized at RCA studios as well as other factors like mic placement during the sessions. It was NOT artificially added after the initial sessions through processing as many fans or critics have speculated over the years. Though there are a small legion of listeners who do prefer the more upfront but drier sounding monaural mix. In this segment Blu gives Hard Knock TV insight into his new album and Major label debut, No York, which is going through its mixing stages right now and will be out this summer. Blu states "It's not a State, It's a state of mind, No York state of mind, it a West Coast album with no references to New York" Blu says he has enough songs to make it a triple album and that he is experimenting with a new sound with more of an electric hip hop feel, in the vain of his Johnson and Jonson project. In part 1 Common talks to Nick Huff Barili about his new album "The Dreamer, The Believer" which he says is produced by No ID, who handled the production of Common's early albums. Common states that although the new album is not coming out through Kanye's Good Music label, he still considers himself part of Good Music because he and Kanye are like brothers. Common address the rumors that him and Nas are working on an album, stating that they were originally going to put out a mixtape together called Nas (dot) Com but that they are now going to make an album together after both of them put our there solo albums. In his book "One Day It Will All Make Sense" Common mentions that early in his acting career he had a hard time getting non-stereotypical roles. In part 1 of this interview Nick Huff Barili asks ‬Slaughterhouse about the new album and if they are looking to make it more introspective than their previous group album, which was extremely lyrical but lacked some of the more personal insight that made them stand out as solo artists. All four members said that you can expect a lot more personal material in the album and that you have to keep in mind that their previous album had to be done in 6 days with a stripped down budget. Slaughterhouse explain how the Shady deal is different than their previous label deals and elaborate on how they see Eminem's Role in the project. While the group says that there aren't full tracks done yet for the album, some skeletals have been built and they have had Jam session with Em. While they haven't had a chance to work with Yelawolf creatively too much they have got a chance to rock a couple shows together which has helped them build a camaraderie as Shady label mates. Nick brought up Joe Buddens' twitter post about Frank Ocean's Novacane song and immediately the group started laughing. Royce says he liked the song too but didn't want to hear it 80 times in a row (Royce and Joe were roommates for the tour). Crooked talks Dollar Story, Royce: Success is Certain, Joe: The Great Escape, Joell Ortiz: currently untitled album but is in works with new label. The conversation moves on to Joell stating that he still listens to the Classics and isn't really inspired by the New Generation of rappers, though he does shout out J Cole and Wiz Khalifa. Joell makes a great point when he says that these days "People are listening to music with their eyes!" Crooked adds that new artists need to do more research on the history of hip hop. As the conversation progresses Joell describes how music has allowed him to travel, which has opened his mind, including recent trip to Skid Row with Sick Jacken.
