Theme song for the 100-day countdown celebration of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, music by Xiao Ke and original lyrics by Lam Jik (Hong Kong). The melody of the song was inspired by a local Beijing ballad called "Shui Niu", which are snails that come out on rainy days. Children in Beijing like to sing songs to attract these little creatures to come out of their shells. Beijing Olympics Footprint Fireworks
It is revealed after the opening ceremonies that part of the footprint fireworks footage were computer generated and it took about a year to make. The footprint fireworks did occur outside the stadium, but the TV and stadium audiences watched the pre-recorded version. The organizers wanted a perfect show rather than the real less than perfect footprint shape in the middle of the Beijing smog at night. The final shot from inside the stadium shows 3 actual footprints over the stadium.

Indonesia reclaimed the Badminton Men's Doubles gold medal after eight years, thanks to Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido, who defeated Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng of China in the final on August 16. Ranked No. 1 in the world, the Indonesian pair only conceded one game in their first three matches. Their opponents, World No. 3 Cai and Fu, however, were in even better form in this tournament, sweeping three matches without losing a single game. Powered by a phenomenal home crowd, Cai and Fu continued their streak in the first game, winning comfortably 21-12. Setiawan and Kido couldn't locate their offensive touch in game and spent most of their time on defense.

Summer Olympics Open With A Bang In Beijing 2008
Amid pollution, protests and impressive pomp and circumstance, the curtains rose Friday on the XXIX Summer Olympics in Beijing. The four-hour opening ceremony at the 91000-seat Bird's Nest stadium was a gaily colored extravaganza punctuated by fireworks and festivities, including a guy-in-the-sky lighting of the Olympic flame. Gymnast Li Ning, who won three gold medals for China in 1984, was lifted by wires for the spectacle. He circled the Bird's Nest once, gliding through the air like a spacewalker. Then he used the torch to light the massive Olympic caldron. The ceremony will be shown on TV Friday night in the United States. The anticipated crowd around the world may make this the most-watched television event ever. The event, directed by Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, drew on China's history and cultural heritage and displayed it all with high-tech wizardry. Fireworks, a Chinese invention, were set off in great waves, from within the Bird's Nest and from as far away as Tiananmen Square, several miles to the south. Country by country, athletes strolled around the stadium in hot, hazy weather. China's squad of more than 600 was led by NBA tower Yao Ming and a young boy who lived through the spring earthquake in Sichuan province. There were thousands of musicians and performers to delight the crowd. In Beijing, the long-anticipated day was greeted with joy and enthusiasm.
