Stepping away here from my usual musical uploads. Michael Smith (September 14, 1954 - August 17, 1983), was a Jamaican dub poet. Along with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and Mutabaruka, he was one of the most well-known dub poets of that era. His album 'Mi Cyaan Believe It' includes this, which was his best known poem of the same name. I rememember back when it was released in 1982 and we used to recite bits of it. Hope that some of the accompanying pictures will bring back memories of that time. Smith was educated at Kingston College and the St George's College Extension School. He also studied at the Jamaican School of Drama with Jean 'Binta' Breeze and Oku Onuora. Linton Kwesi Johnson released some of Smiths work on his LKJ label. Smith appeared on the BBC television series Ebony and the BBC also broadcast a documentary based on his association with Johnson. "Mi Cyaan Believe. It is most remembered for Smiths heartfelt phrase "Laaawwwd - mi cyaan believe it - mi seh - mi cyaan believe it". His outspoken commentary on the isms and schisms of politricks in Jamaica led to his life being cut short and Smith was allegedly murdered by political opponents associated with the right-wing Jamaica Labour Party after heckling the Jamaican Minister of Culture at a political rally on August 17, coincidentally Marcus Garvey's birthday.

After a lot of requests for lyrics and translation from many people I decided to engage this project. I'm sorry for the long absence, but serving in the army takes up most of my time nowadays... Once again, the VBR MP3 audio stream and flv compression gave me hell with the synch XD Credit for the clip goes to voksvictor, but the subs are almost entirely mine, so give credit (for the part of "Shirat Hayam" - Song of the sea [the part with the little children singing] credits go to King James for translating it for me:) Note: As the Hebrew soundtrack was never published, so were the lyrics. Therefore, the lyrics brought here are entirely the way I hear the song. Some of the words are quite hard to understand even for Hebrew speakers, since they're not heard well, and they use ancient biblical Hebrew. PS I'm sorry, but it seems that despite a lot of effort on my side, some parts of the video are still a little bit out of synch (about 2-3 seconds different at the most). This is because I am yet to find a way of conversion which keeps the audio and video in synch (if you know one, don't hesitate to share it with me... :PI tried lots of different ways and this is the least skew I got XD The subs, however, are in synch with the audio, so basically this video serves its purpose ^^
