The Crescendos - Bengawan Solo

20 May 2010:Indonesian singer and songwriter Gesang Martohartono, whose 1940s hit "Bengawan Solo" became a favorite throughout Asia, died Thursday of complications from diabetes and heart problems. He was 92. The songwriter, popularly known as Gesang, died at Muhammadiyah Hospital in the Central Java town of Solo, said Beti Andriani, a hospital spokeswoman. He was admitted Wednesday. Gesang composed the song about the Solo River, the longest river on the island of Java, in the traditional keroncong style, a Portuguese-influenced folk music using stringed instruments. "Bengawan Solo" was translated into at least 13 languages and covered by Chinese, Japanese and Dutch singers. ------------------------------------ The Crescendos 的嘹亮began with 3 schoolboys - Raymond Ho, John Chee and Leslie Chia. Music was an after-school hobby, a means to "stay out of trouble". In 1961, the three of them took part as a three-part harmony group in the Radio Singapore Talentime, which threw the group into the limelight. For the 1962 Talentime, the group decided to inject a new element, and found it in a female singer, Susan Lim 苏珊林. Susan was a friend of Leslie's sister and was all of 13 years old. She fitted right into the group, with the older boys taking care of her like their kid sister. The Crescendos were very well-received because at that time it was still uncommon for local groups to feature a female lead singer, backed by male vocalists. In spite of the changing music <b>...</b>

Written in 1940 about Java's longest river, this is the best known of all Indonesian songs. It is the song I have in reserve when I travel in Indonesia and other Malay-speaking countries. Many times, while taking an evening stroll, I have been invited to join a group of young people sitting around with a guitar or two. Inevitably I will be asked to sing a song. If they want an English song I sing something simple like "Wooden Heart", but I usually end up singing "Bengawan Solo", which they always know. I have also sung it on a Pelni ship, with full backing of the ship's band - quite a novel experience. I was honored to know that this video was shown on Indonesian television after the death of Gesang Martohartono. You can see a playlist of my songs from Asia, Africa and the Middle East here: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords of my songs please see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com
Bengawan Solo

Bengawan Solo a much loved classic Indonesian song. Although I don't speak the native language of my parents that well, I just wanted to play it. I always imagined that it could the song that was playing when my parents met each other, shortly after the war. It probably isn't true, but I prefer to have that fantasy. Hope you'll enjoy.

Got this video when I went to Solo city. It's at Solo Balapan Railway Station. If you're lucky, you will find them playing this kind of music -- and they play lots of song, most of them are keroncong. The players are becak (rickshaw) drivers waiting for train passengers. Usually, they are in action in the afternoon. In this video, theyre playing Bengawan Solo, a famous song by Gesang. It's a song about the famous Bengawan Solo River which flows through central and eastern Java. I think Bengawan Solo is the most popular keroncong song ever made. Update: Gesang Martohartono passed away on May 20, 2010. Good bye Gesang..

Bengawan Solo 梭罗河之恋- Sakura Teng 樱花

Sakura was a popular multilingual female singer in the Singaporean go-go/rock scene during the 60s and 70s. On one of her LPs in 60's, she covered James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", which is dominated by a loud fuzz guitar. The Thai surf group, The Quests, provided the rhythm on Mrs. Teng's songs for many years before this. However, some other anonymous band is responsible for that particular LP. Sakura is still alive and kicking. Her daughter, Amy Ting, is an aspiring actress who starred with her mother in an award-winning indy film called 《Miss Wonton》 in 2001. Shortly after its release, Amy narrowly survived the second World Trade Center attack an in response, enlisted in the US Military. Bengawan Solo by Traditional Chinese Musical Instruments

Bengawan Solo is a famous Indonesian song about the Solo River, which flows through central and eastern Java, Indonesia and is that island's longest river. The song describes the legendary river in a poetic and nostalgic way, that it is surrounded by mountains, its sources are near the city of Surakarta, that it ends in the sea, and that the merchants make use of it. Written in 1940 by Gesang Martohartono, it is in the local kroncong style, a popular folk style with influences from Portuguese. The Japanese, who occupied the country during World War II, brought the song with them to Japan after returning from the war. There, and also in the rest of Asia and later worldwide, the song became very famous. This song was specially re-arranged to be played on Traditional Chinese Music by Jakarta Int'l Oriental Music (JIOMs). Played by Maria Gunawan as the lead Guzheng and accompanied by her sister, Ann Gunawan, and musicians from Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

1070. Bengawan Solo (Gesang Martohartono) - live at The Hyatt, Kota Kinabalu, with Azlan Ag Tuah

This is the second of four songs I sang as the guest singer with Azlan, the lounge singer at the Hyatt Hotel in Kota Kinabalu where my wife and I were on holidays in June 2010. We only decided which songs to do about ten minutes before the set and obviously had no time to rehearse. It was a novel experience for me singing in this kind of environment, without my guitar, trying to fit in with the keyboard accompaniment, so I found I had to sing the song a little differently than I usually sing it. Fortunately by the time we got to this song the rain was starting to ease off. Written in 1940 about Java's longest river, this is the best known of all Indonesian songs. My wife knows it well as one of the songs of her childhood growing up in Malaysia. I often sing it when I travel in Indonesia and other Malay-speaking countries. I have also sung it on a Pelni ship, with full backing of the ship's band. I put a video of this song up on YouTube three years ago, and it has had over 52000 views so far. Official website: www.yumetoridreambird.com Official FB page: www.facebook.com Date: 14 Feb 2011 (Mon) & 17 Feb 2011 (Thur) Venue: Concourse, The Esplanade One of the newest exciting groups in town, Yumetori (Ariel Foo - vocals and Ian Soh - keys) got their name from Japanese-speaking Ariel's attempt to translate the word "Dreamweaver". However, due to the lack of vocabulary (on the part of the Japanese language, apparently), they had to settle for "Dreambird" - and Yumetori was born. In line with the "Vintage Jukebox" theme, Yumetori broke out their own cranky boombox that would make "vintage" sound anything but vintage. With vocals sweet as chendol, and grooves like those on the KPE road surface, Yumetori were supported by promising local talents Justin Low on guitar and Rafaee Mahmood on drums. In this video, the band performed its version of the Indonesian folk song "Bengawan Solo". Images courtesy of The Esplanade Co Ltd
