Loop City by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)

The industrial areas in the Copenhagen suburbs are next in line for urban development. A new light rail is planned to interconnect 20 development zones with a total area of 11 Km2, the size of the entire inner city. We are proposing to turn the light rail line into a spine of dense urbanity with a series of peaks at the stations. By combing the rail with strategies for energy exchange, waste management, water treatment and electric car stations, the infrastructure could become the base for a new sustainable ring of development around Copenhagen, and an artery of true urbanity pumping life into the heart of the suburbs. At certain points the rail becomes a building itself almost like a Roman aqueduct passing through the suburbs, at other points it forms small pockets of urbanity around the stations. We propose to upgrade the planned light rail by extending it to form a regional ring around Oresund connecting similar development areas, and creating a new 50 year development perspective for a cross border region between Sweden and Denmark. Where the Finger Plan from 1947 was about connectivity from suburb to center the Loop City is linking a string of highly differentiated urban nodes, universities and working spaces in a center-less metropolitan region around a blue void. This ring, comparable in size to the San Francisco Bay area, has enough development areas to contain the growth of the region the next 50 years, and could become a model for a both sustainable, dense and ...

In 2008 Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) presented the Mountain Dwellings or MTN concept as a complete creation. Mountain Dwellings, located in Orestad city offers the best of two worlds: closeness to the hectic city life in the centre of Copenhagen, and the tranquillity of suburban life. Approached to create a space for 20000 sq ft of housing and 60000 sq ft of parking, BIG were faced with the problem of taking these functional elements and presenting a liveable, attractive space. Rather than doing two separate buildings next to each other - a parking and a housing block BIG decided to merge the two functions into a symbiotic relationship. The parking area, which services the entire neighbourhood, needed to be connected to the street, while the homes required sunlight, fresh air and views.... BIG KHALIFA PARK

Bjarke Ingels Group was asked by TDIC in Abu Dhabi to design a 15.000 m2 exhibition hall within a 375.000m2 park. Partnering with realities:United and AKT the design of the exhibition hall turned into reconfiguring the entire park. By building a perimeter building that defines Khalifa Park into a more manageable 250.000m2 BIG anticipates Abu Dhabi's rapid growth and protects an open space for future generations. The perimeter building is capped by a thrill ride that allows its riders to catch glimpses of the park and the Gulf beyond.

TEDxAmsterdam - Bjarke Ingels - 11/20/09

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels is the principal of the architecture firm BIG, based in Copenhagen. An alumnus of Rem Koolhaas OMA practice, Ingels takes a similar approach: experimenting with pure space, but never losing sight of the building as a solution to a real-world problem. In his talk, Bjarke Ingels rockets through photo/video-mingled stories of his eco-flashy designs. His buildings not only look like nature — they act like nature: blocking the wind, collecting solar energy — and creating stunning views. His manifesto Yes Is More takes the form of a giant cartoon strip, 130 meters long, that reminds people to keep thinking big — to see all our modern problems as challenges that inspire us. BIG ECH - Escher Tower

Bjarke Ingels describes how when asked to design a Scandinavian skyscraper with views and daylight in abundance, he chose a slim volume: a thin slab with minimal distance between the facades. The thin slab however is as structurally complicated as it is visually simple. It combines maximum wind pressure - the wide side - with minimal foothold - the short side, thus appearing as an unstable monolith. The Escher Tower in response consists of 3 square towers merged into one. The central tower is straight as a dart, the two peripheral ones change places between ground floor and penthouse, causing the volume to flip 90 degrees. This provides maximal foothold for the hardest wind pressures.

Through a series of award-winning design projects and buildings, Bjarke Ingels has achieved an international reputation as a member of a new generation of architects who combine shrewd analysis, playful experimentation, social responsibility and humor. For Ingels, "Architecture evolves from the collision of political, economical, functional, logistical, cultural, structural, environmental and social interests, as well as interests yet unnamed and unforeseen. How to tell such a complex story in a simple way?" With support from Taubman College, the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, and the Program in the Environment.
