**Borg and Connors met in the Semi-Finals of Wimbledon in 1981** Here told is the story of an exciting match between two legends of tennis, Björn Borg, and Jimmy Connors. Borg is legendary for his speed on court as well as his explosive yet effortless and light footwork, his ability to hit stunning passing shots, his incredible resilience and mental strength, and his excellent adaptability. Any vulnerability or weakness that he may have been feeling in matches during the tough moments were almost never revealed; his cool, icy and stoic demeanour, expressing a clear and intimidating aura on the court. Borg won 11 majors during the span of his career, 6 Roland Garros titles, and 5 straight Wimbledon titles. Most of all, he is legendary for being incredibly dominant on clay, and having been able to win the Roland Garros/Wimbledon double on 3 seperate occasions. Perhaps, Borg's most iconic moments were his Wimbledon triumph over John McEnroe in 1980, and his shocking retirement at the tender age of 26! Jimmy Connors was as fierce a competitor as you could ever wish to meet (or not meet) on the tennis courts. Well known for his meticulous footwork, flat, hard, penetrating ground-strokes, and fiery, spirited temperament, Jimmy Connors would go on to amass 8 majors and a professional career which was to last more than 20 years. He arrived long before Borg at the tail-end of Rosewall's and Laver's careers, and finished long, long after Borg had announced his retirement in 1982 ...

On January 18 1981, in front of 18 287 spectators at Madison Square Garden, among them announcers Pat Summerall and Tony Trabert, Fred Perry, Don Budge, Jack Kramer, Ilie Nastase, Arthur Ashe and favorite character actor Jack Warden -- The Ice Man Viking conquered New York for the second successive year in spectacular style. For the second year in a row Björn Borg had demolished McEnroe and Connors within days on their best surface -- and now adding indoor carpet legend Ivan Lendl to his belt of scalps. Ivan Lendl had stunned Borg in five sets on indoor carpet in Switzerland just three months earlier and would go on to 9 successive finals at the YEC New York Masters tourneys as well as reaching the finals at RG and crucifying McEnroe 4 times, almost always in straight sets, on all surfaces between January 12th 1981 and January 12 1982. McEnroe couldn't handle Lendl's ferocious cross-court FH and while Ivan was playing really well here Borg shocked Lendl with his unmatched speed, consistency, depth and precision (check out the 48-stroke battle!) interspersed with lethal serves, groundstrokes and net-forays. Watch how Borg doesn't give Lendl much room for his FH -- pinning Lendl in the BH corner like Rafa does at his best against Federer. Lendl displayed heathy respect for the greatest stroke of the 1970s -- Borg's FH since that was also a magificent point-ender. Soon The Ice Man started walking on ice in in the middle of the second set -- while blazing clutch-serves all ...

The second set struggle and battle ensues between the two great players. Borg urgently needed to make a move in set 3, otherwise his chances of claiming a 6th consecutive Wimbledon title (!) would be crushed by the sustained, bludgeoning aggression of Connors. Borg needed to find a way to consistently impose his will and game on the match...

The genius Ilie Nastase of Rumania was in peak form and hadn't lost a set going into this final and was the overwhelming favorite for the title -- experienced and had practically annihilated Jimmy Connors in almost everyone of their encounters all through the year 1976 and he had a lead over his opponent here, Björn Borg, in H2H's too that season. Borg had astonished the experts too: also steamrolling every opponent without losing a single set -- entering the final of the greatest tournament in the history of the tennis with an aggressive game no one thought he was capable of -- a double circumstance never happening before or since in Wimbledon history. Guided by the genius analysis and comments from of the great expert Jack Kramer and legendary Dan Maskell -- when everyone was on their edges of their seats to see how this spectacular encounter would play out...

The start of this amazing three-hour feast of tennis -- The Ice Man versus The Belleville Basher at the peak of their powers -- in front of a jam-packed house at one of the most classic of all sports arenas: Madison Square Garden in New York -- could it be better?! Well, the image quality could be for sure, and I am sorry for the especially dismal quality in the mid-section of this clip. Believe me, I've discarded several stunning rallies because of extreme noise and drop-outs but I just had to include some absolutely astonishing shotmaking even if the image quality is well below par in places. But you just gotta love top-form Jimbo and Borg going at each other with a bunch of blowtorches and five pairs of hammer and tongs each! Next up: Borg vs Jimbo at Wimby SF 1979 in finer quality and some rare interview-clips from 1981-1983 when Borg praises Jimmy as his favorite rival when it came to great rallies and his thoughts on why he suddenly retired at the ripe old age of, effectively, 25, as the, arguably, brightest and most globally famous super-star of his era -- and as the, by far, most famous tennis-player of all time...

Björn Borg enters his, arguably, 6th straight year as World No. 1 at the still unmatched and record-low age of 24 years when he -- in January 1981 -- for the second successive year dominates and destroys prime Connors and McEnroe (ie arguably some of the finest indoor carpet players in history) in the same tournament: The year-end championships at Madison Square Garden in New York, USA -- called GP Masters at the time. Here in the SF Borg draws and quarters a peak-playing Jimbo to the tune of 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Please excuse the terrible image-quality -- you can buy this match on the net in finer quality -- at least here you get a taste of their sublime greatness. Borg is truly stunning when he as clay-court GOAT dominates the finest fast-courters of his age in their home-country and on their favorite surface. Please note the 36-stroke rally at the end of the match, which ends with Borg hammering a FH-passingshot past a helplessly flailing Connors that almost lands smack on the baseline to boot. It is kind of a mirror to the match-point at the end of the Masters-final 1988 between Becker and Lendl that was a 37-stroke rally ending on a net-jumping let-ball. The most impressive aspect of this that the Borg-Jimbo-rally here takes only 49-seconds to complete which a lot faster than the Becker-Lendl-rally took to finish. Who would believe that Borg with a wooden teaspoon in his hand and Jimbo with his old, tiny metal-racquet would hit with more power and pace than Becker and ...

"The Ice Man" Björn Borg dominates the great Ilie Nastase and wins the 1st and 2nd sets -- a match fought on the hottest day in Britain since they started keeping a record of temperatures and weather over 300 years ago...

In one of Björn Borg's greatest performances at Flushing Meadows he completely blowouts five-time US Open-champion Jimmy Connors. Jimbo was in peak form and yet he was completely overpowered by "The Ice Man" -- with thunderbolt serves, volleys, overheads and groundstrokes. An astonishing display by Bear Fortress on hard-court cement -- finishing off Connors to the tune of 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Worth remarking is that Jimbo didn't lose to John McEnroe at all in 1981. Even Ivan Lendl was 4-0 in H2Hs with Johnny Mac in 1981...

Already at two games apiece, the 5th set was becoming a classic; toing and froing with missed opportunities, great tension, and drama. All that remained was to see, with bated breath, who the eventual winner would be. Still balanced on a knife-edge, here then is the conclusion of one of the classic Wimbledon semi-finals.

Because of source-trouble -- only some choice moments of Björn Borg at his very best at Flushing Meadows against Jimmy Connors under very windy conditions making overheads very tricky.
