The production is fantastic, and the musicianship is impressive during a lot of the solos, too. The issue I'm having with the album, though, is that it's not organized very cohesively, considering so many instrumental interludes basically hijack the songs until they're bordering on being directionless. Sure, you could chalk it up to unconventional song structures, but I can't help but feel like I'm dealing with something different. This is no Agalloch we're talking about here. Overall, I liked it. My friend convinced me to attend his abstract theatrical production, outside in Chicago one cold Spring day in 2005. The innumerable cast members utilized all of Wicker Park as a stage. The performance was extremely bizarre, but strangely entertaining. My friend's role, for example, was the rear end of a pvc pipe-and-burlap sack crafted mastodon. He was in charge of throwing flowers out off the mastodon's ass, as it moved slowly throughout the park...you get the idea. So after the production ended with a big speech by some guy in a deformed chicken mask and a black suit, who spent the entire production taking single steps and outlining his footprints in chalk as he went, it was time for the post-performance mingling. We were in the open park and a "dj" of sorts started spinning records at random. I don't know if they just sorta decided that a loud "dj" (notice the quotes) would be charming following a mind-eff of a show, but there he was anyway. And there he played some really crappy music. Walking around the park, I noticed some dancing had begun in front of said "dj." And then came the amazement. We got closer, I scrambled for my camera, shakily recorded the approach, and then stopped - dead in my tracks. A couple of the actors had taken a liking to the unforgettable "Block-rockin' Beats" - or at least I think that's the name of the song. These kids were bad in a Caucasian way (not a Michael Jackson way). And I'm white, and have spent much time around white people, so I <b>...</b>

On Labour Day (Monday Sept 5, 2011), Toronto Pig Save, TARVS and other compassionate groups held a veggie dog giveaway across from Quality Meat Packers' pig slaughterhouse in Stanley Park at 700 Wellington Street West, Toronto. Chalk artist Jo Lalonde drew a stunning rendition of Trixie - a three-legged pig rescued by Susan Morris at Snooters Farm Animal Sanctuary in Uxbridge, Ontario. Toronto Pig Save along with other animal rights groups decided to take back the neighbourhood and show what is possible in a residential area overshadowed by the QMP pig slaughterhouse. TPS is promoting an alternative vision for the neighbourhood. In place of a pig slaughterhouse, TPS is advocating for a just transition for workers on Labour Day - safe, fulfilling, and meaningful jobs needed to support a food economy that is local, organic, and whole grain and plant based (that is, vegan).
