The Bolshoi - Friends (Full Album)

Here's one the great cult bands of the 80's that many so-called experts missed. That's unfortunate because The Bolshoi made some excellent songs and they sounded like no one else without resorting to gimmicks. Led by guitarist/vocalist Trevor Tanner, they crafted dark, edgy music that often attacked the injustices of mainstream society. The main single was the dramatic "A Way" (you'll notice that it is misspelled by Amazon as "Away"). This may have been the best alt hit released in 1986. It tells the tale of a beautiful, manipulative girl who uses her wiles to charm her way into the graces of the upper crust, the conformist & wealthy in-crowd. She fails to see that such false behavior ultimately will turn on itself and leave her alone now that she has alienated those who would have truly cared about her. "Sunday Morning" is a knock on the hypocrisy of the church. It is a lovely piano ballad that chronicles the singer's decision to leave religion behind in his youth. It features the line, "Standing in line with a dirty mind... clean it up on Sunday morning. I don't wanna do it anymore." "Looking for a Life to Lose" (also misspelled on Amazon) peers into the minds of bitter, jaded adults who often pour their negative outlook directly into the minds of their children, never giving the young a chance at happiness; given Tanner's undeniable anger, sarcasm and bitterness, it seems this is autobiographical and that he wishes he'd had a better chance when he was young. Bolshoi Ballet: Yuri Grigorovich 85 years jubilee

MOSCOW, January 2 2012 (Itar-Tass) — World acclaimed Russian choreographer Yuri Grigorovich has turned 85. On Monday, Grigorovich's The Nutcracker ballet will be performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Although a jubilee performance will be staged on January 6. Grigorovich was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) on January 2, 1927 into a family connected with the Imperial Russian Ballet. He graduated from the Leningrad Choreographic School in 1946 and danced as a soloist of the Kirov Ballet until 1962. His staging of Sergey Prokofiev's The Stone Flower (1957) and of The Legend of Love (1961) brought him acclaim as a choreographer. In 1964, he moved to the Bolshoi Theatre, where he worked as an artistic director until 1995. His most famous productions at the Bolshoi were The Nutcracker (1966), Spartacus (1967), and Ivan the Terrible (1975). He reworked Swan Lake to produce a happy end for the story in 1984. In 1997, he left the Bolshoi over disagreement with the policies of the then theatre mangers. Thereupon he choreographed for various Russian companies before settling in Krasnodar, where he set up his own company. Grigorovich has been heading the juries of numerous international competitions in classical ballet. After the death of his wife, the great ballerina Natalia Bessmertnova, on February 19, 2008, he was offered the opportunity to return to the Bolshoi again in the capacity of ballet master and choreographer.

Bolshoi Simulation of the Universe [720p]

The Bolshoi simulation is the most accurate cosmological simulation of the evolution of the large-scale structure of the universe yet made ("bolshoi" is the Russian word for "great" or "grand"). The first two of a series of research papers describing Bolshoi and its implications have been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. The first data release of Bolshoi outputs, including output from Bolshoi and also the BigBolshoi or MultiDark simulation of a volume 64 times bigger than Bolshoi, has just been made publicly available to the world's astronomers and astrophysicists. The starting point for Bolshoi was the best ground- and space-based observations, including NASA's long-running and highly successful WMAP Explorer mission that has been mapping the light of the Big Bang in the entire sky. One of the world's fastest supercomputers then calculated the evolution of a typical region of the universe a billion light years across. The Bolshoi simulation took 6 million cpu hours to run on the Pleiades supercomputer—recently ranked as seventh fastest of the world's top 500 supercomputers—at NASA Ames Research Center. This visualization of dark matter is 1/1000 of the gigantic Bolshoi cosmological simulation, zooming in on a region centered on the dark matter halo of a very large cluster of galaxies. credit: Chris Henze, NASA Ames Research Center source: hipacc.ucsc.edu
