Even rarer than his historic 1988 45-speed record is this live version of the same song by Cocoa Tea. I am not sure if this was ever published on vinyl or otherwise; based upon the sound quality it is almost certainly a bootleg copy of a live performance. (It will be much appreciated if anyone could shed some light on the matter.) NOTE: Well, after I posted it YouTube has done me the favor. Apparently this song did appear on at least one vinyl record. (See: youtu.be I still suspect it's a bootleg though. By the late eighties the beleaguered Apartheid regime in South Africa was under intense pressure both internally (even by Afrikaner bastions previously committed to racial segregation, like the University of Stellenbosch) and externally (as this recording shows). Even though Botha was considered a difficult individual to deal with, he did ease some of the more onerous terms of Apartheid, for example the ban on mixed marriages. Unfortunately he could not bring himself to go the whole way. Cocoa Tea's recording of "President Botha" turned out to be quite prophetic, as PW Botha was ousted as president the very next year by a group of liberal members from the ruling party under leadership of FW De Klerk, who in short order released Nelson Mandela and scrapped the Apartheid system for good. Hendrik Egnatius Botha, commonly known as Naas Botha (born 27 February 1958) is a Northern Transvaal and Springboks former Rugby union player. Botha mostly played in the fly-half position and is now a rugby commentator for the South African M-Net and Supersport TV channels.
