Gregor Piatigorsky - Nocturne (Lili Boulanger) (1936)
Gregor Piatigorsky (1903.4.17 - 1976.8.6.), a famous Ukrainian-American Cellist, plays Lili Boulanger's Nocturne. Although the piece is not so well-known, it's sweet enough to listen at this time of the year. Played on my Numark machine.

About Dinu Lipatti, Soo Kian Hing writes that he had: " power, virtuosity and a certain cheeky youthful streak! It was Nadia Boulanger, Lipatti's mentor and close friend, who first coaxed the young and unknown Lipatti into a recording studio for the 1937 recording of Brahm's Waltzes, played as in the original version for four hands (with who else but Boulanger herself, at that time already a celebrated pianist). Brahms' Waltzes are nothing like Chopin's more full-bodied ones; rather, they are miniatures, a "series of variations based upon the ¾ meter" (quoting Dame Moura Lympany). Instead of playing the selected waltzes in numerical sequence, the creative programming of this set allowed them to flow smoothly from one to the next. The saddest music in the world : Georges Boulanger - Gloomy Sunday (Szomorú Vasárnap)
"Gloomy Sunday" by Hungarian composer Rezsö Seress probably needs no introduction. It is the infamous "suicide song" composed in 1933 and recorded by many artists, such as Billie Holliday and later on Sarah Brightman. The song became instantly controversial as it was blamed for a large number of suicides... (This may be just an urban legend though). Also see Dairyman716 channel for a German sung version by Mimi Thoma and other YouTube channels for Damia's famous French version "Sombre Dimanche". I would like to present the version by famed Romanian violinist and composer Georges Boulanger. For more information on him visit www.boulanger-musik.com.ar. Georges Boulanger's "Avant de mourir " as a French love song.... (1939)

Before I die) was composed by famed Romanian violinist, composer and conductor Georges Boulanger (1893-1958). It is a beautiful haunting sad melody which became a enormous hit for Boulanger. In 1939 English lyrics were added to the music and "Avant de mourir" became "My prayer" -recorded by the orchestra of Glenn Miller and other bands... In France "Avant de mourir" was featured in the Casino de Paris spectacle "Amours de Paris" starring Maurice Chevalier. The title was changed to "Tout nous parle d'amour" (lit. Everything speaks to us of love) although another set of lyrics with the title "Ma prière" was written as well.... In 1958 the song was revived by The Platters and spent 21 weeks at number 1 in the US charts. The version presented in this video was recorded by the orchestra of AJ Pesenti - a popular tango orchestra from the late 1930s... The video features images of Paris from the 1930s.... About the record : Pathé PA. 1673/ mx. CPT 4528 Paris, 1939 Record in quite good condition. This record was transferred with a 78rpm phono preamp and Orofon Om78 cartridge and stylus in order to get an acceptable 78rpm playback.

Solemn Song by Dr Richard Boulanger
"Solemn Song for Evening" was written by Dr. Richard Boulanger in 1987 and performed here during his presentation at theBohlen-Pierce Scale Symposium in Boston, 2010. The piece was composed in the Bohlen-Pierce Scale and was not only the first vocal piece in the BP scale, but the first BP music I was exposed to when he played and sang it during electronic music composition class at Berklee College of Music, during my undergrad. It opened my ears to a new world of tonality, and sent me on my life-long path of writing in different tunings. - - - Bohlen-Pierce Scale Symposium, Boston 2010 There has been enough interest lately in the Bohlen-Pierce Scale - a macrotonal musical tuning system based on a 3/1 frame (three times the frequency, called a "tritave", as opposed to the 2/1 "octave") divided by 13 equal steps - that an entire symposium was organized in Boston. It included the support of three major music educational institutions - Berklee College of Music, the Goethe Institute and New England Conservatory. Heinz Bohlen and Max Mathews skyped in at various times. It included three full days of talks and three full nights of music. I will type more information here soon and upload more videos as I get them digitized. Professional cameras were covering the entire symposium. Here I will just upload what I captured on my own camera. This symposium was very overwhelming for me, thinking I was among just a handful of interested BP fans. There were at least 40 people actively <b>...</b>
