This performance of Mars was recorded in 1945 and is released on BEULAH 2PD12 "Boult's Planets" "The performance has an indefinable rightness about it, a supreme authority that makes it difficult to imagine the score being interpreted any other way. Has Mars ever resounded with more terrifying ferocity since? I very much doubt it. In Venus the playing of the BBC SO has a translucent beauty, while the impish Mercury really sparkles. Jupiter has marvelous exuberance and sparkle, its big tune lent enormous dignity and humanity. Saturn, too, is paced to perfection, and Uranus goes about his mischievous antics with terrific swagger. Symphony No 9 Great 3rd mvt (Schubert) BBCSO Boult

This performance of the third movement (allegro vivace) of Schubert's Symphony No 9 in C major was recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult early in its existence in December 1934. This was very much Adrian Boult's signature work. He performed Schubert 9 more than any other symphony during his long conducting career. This is a track from Beulah 1PD32 "Historic Schubert". Available in all good record stores or direct from Beulah. For more info visit www.eavb.co.uk Robert Cowen writes in Gramophone for December 2008 "I was happy to encounter Beulah's expert transfer/remastering of Sir Adrian Boult's first recording of Schubert's Ninth, a brilliantly executed performance (BBCSO), swift and breezy, and, as almost always with Boult, acutely structure-conscious. I was grateful to discover Anatole Fistoulari's 1944 Unfinished with the National Philharmonic, a fresh and dramatic reading, though not quite as well recorded at the Boult." Bob Briggs at Music Web International writes: "Its obvious that Boult is using a smaller orchestra than would be used today and because of this the dance like scherzo has a more earthy feel to it than is usual. Its a real light fantastic and full of Austrian peasant dancing. The trio is packed with wonderful harmonie sounds. " Robert Matthew Walker writes in International Record Review for February 2009: The first thing that strikes the listener is the fine quality of the sound and the silent surfaces for a 75 year old ...

Mussorgsky "Night on Bald Mountain" - Sir Adrian Boult conducts

Sir Adrian Boult made only one recording of any of Mussorgsky's music: this 1960 performance of "Night on Bald Mountain" for Reader's Digest. Its producer, Charles Gerhardt, 'tarted up' the Rimsky-Korsakov score with a few ideas of his own, notably in the percussion (added side-drums, cymbal crashes and gong strokes) as well as deleting the recurring brass 'fanfare' motifs familiar in the Rimsky edition. Sir Adrian seems to have enjoyed letting his hair down, what little of it there was!. (Chesky CD 53.)

Sibelius Oceanides (London PO/Boult)

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957): Oceanides opus 73 (1913) London Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Adrian Boult (1889-1983) Recorded in 1956 Inspiration for his tone poems generally came to him from two basic sources: Finnish legend, as recorded in the national epic the Kalevala, and Nature in its varied moods and awesome dimensions. In some instances these two powerful influences converged. The Oceanides, as Sibelius pointed out, "derives from the mythology of Homer and not from the Kalevala," but the work has been regarded by many as a marine counterpart to the brooding and terrifying landscape painted later in his final masterwork in this genre (the last of his orchestral works, in fact), Tapiola, which represents the Kalevala's depiction of the domain of the forest god Tapio. These two contrasting yet complementary works, incidentally, were the only ones Sibelius composed specifically for presentation in the United States. He was not present for the premiere of Tapiola, given by Walter Damrosch (who had commissioned it) and his New York Symphony Orchestra at the end of 1926, but he himself conducted the premiere of The Oceanides at the Norfolk Music Festival in Connecticut a dozen years earlier, on June 14, 1914. Carl Stoeckel and his wife Ellen, the supporters of that enterprise who commissioned this work, did not specify its subject; it may have been the prospect of the ocean voyage to conduct the premiere that directed Sibelius's thoughts to the realm of Oceanus and his three ...

Sibelius - Tapiola (LPO/Boult) (1/2)

Part I Jean Sibelius (1865-1957): Tapiola opus 112 (1925) The London Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Adrian Boult (1889-1983) Tapiola (literally, "Realm of Tapio"), op. 112, is a tone poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was the product of a commission from Walter Damrosch for the New York Philharmonic Society. Tapiola portrays the terrifying spirit (Tapio) lying behind the stark Finnish pine-forests that enveloped Sibelius's isolated home outside Järvenpää. When asked by the publisher to clarify the work's program, Sibelius responded by supplying a quatrain: "Widespread they stand, the Northland's dusky forests, Ancient, mysterious, brooding savage dreams; Within them dwells the Forest's mighty God, And wood-sprites in the gloom weave magic secrets." It was to be his last major work, even though he would go on to live for another thirty years. However, in his excellent book "Sibelius and his world", Robert Layton mentions another symphony, the mysterious Eighth. Sibelius must have said that he completed the work in the early 1930s but that he wasn't satisfied with it. I found these wonderful pictures on the internet, they're from the Oulanka National Park in Northern Finland.

Beethoven piano concerto Solomon Cutner & Boult 1944 P1

According to Bryan Crimp's biography, the evidence seems clear cut: Solomon was most definitely exploited by his teacher, Mathilde Verne as a youth. She was a Clara Schumann pupil who had founded a new school and saw Solomon both a the boy to make the school's name and a source of income. Legend has it he was found in an East End Ghetto - however his Father was a master tailor and hardly suffering, An application to a Jewish charity brought about the boy's entering the MV school (Lessons and schooling paid for - it was expensive even in those days). Solomon was playing the Tchaikovsky and Brahms D minor at the age of twelve !! (move over Kissin). Solomon had had enough by the age of fifteen; he began to loathe playing the piano and resented Verne's exploitation to such a degree that he could rarely bring himself to talk about, so painful an experience was it. He then went to Paris to study with a Leschetizky pupil whose name escapes me and someone else (Levy ? sorry this is a bit hopeless). But the point is he rebuilt his technique slowly and painstakingly during this time whilst maturing as an artist. He played again in London when he was 21 and through the twenties and thirties rebuilt his career. By the time of the war he had achieved a considerable repututation once more in the UK and to some extent in Europe (arguably a poor and greedy manager curtailed his overseas touring and the growth of his international reputution - he later went to the legendary Ibbs and ...

Vaughan Williams - English Folk Song Suite - Part 1/3 - LSO SIR ADRIAN BOULT

Written in 1923, the English Folk Song Suite is one of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams's most famous works for military band. In 1924, the piece was arranged for full orchestra and brass band by Vaughan Williams' student Gordon Jacob. The suite consists of three movements: March, Intermezzo and another March, all of which are subtitled with English folk song names. The first march is based upon Seventeen Come Sunday, the Intermezzo upon My Bonny Boy and the final movement on Folk Songs from Somerset. The suite was originally composed as a four-movement suite, including Sea Songs as the second movement. Its world premiere was given at Kneller Hall on July 4, 1923 Ralph Vaughan Williams was an English composer of symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music, and film scores. He was also a collector of English folk music and song which influenced his editorial approach to the English Hymnal, beginning in 1904, containing many folk song arrangements set as hymn tunes, in addition to several original compositions.

The incomparable Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962) sings the motet "Hear my prayer -- Oh for the wings of a dove" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-47). This is one of several compositions associated with Mendelssohn's sojourns in England, the first in 1829. This motet or "anthem" was composed in 1844 for soprano solo, chorus and organ accompaniment. It was later given an orchestral setting and has, understandably, remained popular in the Anglican Church. The recording is from 1957 and Kirsten Flagstad is accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. *** For Summertime

Re-loaded from TheRestlesswind's channel. Ralph Vaughan Williams' - gorgeous 'Serenade to Music' - performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and magnificent chorus of singers in its whole, wonderful entirety. How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank! Here will we sit and let the sounds of music Creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night Become the touches of sweet harmony... How sweet the night is Look how the floor of heaven Is thick inlaid with patines of bright gold: There's not the smallest orb that thou behold'st But in his motion like an angel sings, Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubins; Such harmony is in immortal souls; But whilst this muddy vesture of decay Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it. Come, ho! and wake Diana with a hymn! With sweetest touches pierce your mistress' ear, And draw her home with music. I am never merry when I hear sweet music. The reason is, your spirits are attentive -- The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night And his affections dark as Erebus: Let no such man be trusted. Music! hark! It is your music of the house. Methinks it sounds much sweeter than by day. Silence bestows that virtue on it How many things by season season'd are To their right praise and true perfection! Peace, ho! the moon sleeps with Endymion And would not be awak'd.
